hmm, ok... i planned to install ubuntu/mint on my other hdd... how big is the comfort level to install linux?

p/s: and what' the diff btw ext3 and swap partition? hmm.gif
*
for my last setup, whole system just takes less than 4gb of space, these includes office softwares, n other essentials for productivity. then i create another partition for my home folder, so when i reformat or upgrade, my settings will remain.

as for swap, if ur system memory is less than 2gb, create a swap with around 512mb is more than enough. ext3 n swap r partition format, like windows' ntfs/fat32. swap is windows' virtual memory but in linux its optional, without it wont crash ur os, its advice to have at least 512mb if ur ram is less than 2gb. other partition just use ext3.

so for your reference,

1. ur /(also called root) partition u can make it 5gb~10gb, up to u, as i just use around 4gb for full system included all those codecs n shits u needs to run things or watch movies wink.gif

2. then create a swap space for like 256mb~512mb.

3. the rest just create and mount as /home so all ur downloaded stuff can put in there safely without worry about reformatting ur os or anything screw up in ur system partition. this is the space that u can change stuff, n not really related to ur system's operation. for storage

so, i need 3 new partition?

1) /root for 10gb.

2) swap for 256mb (my ram is 2gb) *does it mean bigger swap, faster speed?

3) home partition.

right?

oh ya, i need 1 more time clarification, linux can read my media files stored on ntfs hdd with correct plugin rights?

no, tats just my way of arranging my stuff, / just need around 5~8gb, 10 is too much for me...swap is just as fast as ur hdd can go, it wont make it any faster, faster solution is more ram! bigger swap doesnt mean faster speed.

home partition for me is a must la...im a more organized person

u need / not /root, yes u can use 256mb or higher, it up to u. i also use 2gb ram, i don't use swap. no such thing as bigger swap, faster speed.
yes linux can read ur media files store don ntfs hdd with correct plugin install.
Ubuntu actually make it very easy for us to use.

what graphic card u have? use mplayer with xv video output in mplayer setting will settle it, but beware, if u use ati, your player will flicker if not in fullscreen mode! i guess ur not using nvidia, as u complain about the lag...i watched a few 720p mov, not much lag.

1 thing is for sure, currently linux's video acceleration isnt there yet, just something to compensate...nvidia n amd is making changes in their driver to support hardware acceleration, cause current way of hardware acceleration is to create a 3d texture, so ur gfx card takes k of the image in opengl...

i dont see it as hardware issue, the last time(which is couple of months back) i played on 1.8ghz opteron, 2gb ram, ati 1600pro...which is weaker than ur current setup..u sure u setup ur mplayer to use xv?

after do some googling, i found out 1 user managed to solve this by editing the menu.lst. below is his quote. can someone tell me how to get it done?

"I figured this out. You have to change menu.lst and replace "root=dev/sdax" with the UUID of the partition that Linux is installed on."

Boot using livecd (since you cannot boot hdd) and run this command:
ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid

It will show all the partition by uuid.
Use the id in menu.lst.

If you need more details, please read my article:
