Hi,

I'm a total noob who had just installed ubuntu 8.1 due to getting sick of WAGs WGAs. I've installed my ubuntu on my old comp which was connected to the same router with my new pc. Through the new pc with vista business, I made a workgroup mshome for home networking. On vista, I can see the ubuntu pc but can't access it more or so the shared folder from it. The most important problem for me is on my ubuntu pc, I can't even see my vista pc. Under places >windows network >mshome my vista pc doesn't showed up (this part right here baffles me since most of the troubleshooting i've read on the net and everywhere occurs no problem). I've tried smb://vista pc's ip address, but still doesn't work. i just need to read my files from my vista pc on my ubuntu. hope somebody can help. thanks.

ur vista's folder sharing option is set? n which version of ubuntu ur using?
*
I'm not sure i understand. But the folders on Vista was been able to use on the when i'm using win xp. But now I upgraded to ubuntu 8.1 ibix (dual boot). I did not alter the settings on the vista folders. the problem is ubuntu can't even see my vista computer.

should I manually adjust network settings to get into mshome network or ubuntu automatically done this?

hmm usually ubuntu do it automatically, perhaps u can try to check if samba is installed, use package manager, search for samba or smb, if its not installed, install it
*
installing samba 4 now. Finish in another 20 hrs or so. It seems samba 2.3 have been installed but i mark samba 4 for installation and it removed samba 2.3.

Always start with "ping" when trying to troubleshoot networking problem.

1. ping ip vista client - make sure vista does not blocking icmp
If you got reply, then there is no problem

2. ping vista hostname/netbios name
If you got reply and the ip comes back, then it is fine.
If you got ip which you does not recognized, then you could be behind router and you can't use hostname for samba.
If this is the case, you might want to try samba winbind.
http://mambang.org.my/modules/news/article...eywords=winbind

3. Try list samba shares using what anetwork suggested by using both ip and hostname. This will give you some clue if your samba configuration has problem or folder shares on vista has problem.
You can check your samba configuration using : testparm
*
2. the vista has a dynamic ip doh.gif. B4 this it was only static no wonder i can't find. So the pinged hostname is fine.
but i can't install windbind. here's the problem:

Pada smb.conf pula, tambah baris berikut pada section [global] :

hahaha u still hv lots to learn. for default start up, sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst (it's L, not 1), in tat file, u'll see a line with default (a number), now in that file look for your ubuntu's arrangement, if it's the 1st 1 means 0. e.g. default 0

press tab n it will list down whats in the folder, or tab for it to auto select file name that is most likely to your request. e.g. when u type /bo *press tab* it become /boot, hope u get the idea, experiment with it if u dont get the idea.
*
it wouldn't work since the default 0 in that is already ubuntu but I found the solution already. A worth noting for newbies who installed their ubuntus within windows. To change the default OS, you must log into windows, go to start>control panel>system>advanced>startup and recovery and changed the default OS there.
