Try: apt-cache search gnome-vfs, probably the name has change or whatever.
This only happen when compilation failed.

Atleast you should get libgnomevfs2-extra.
Probably something is missing in your apt sources.list. Please check.
Look for any error shown when you apt-get update.

You can manually search package here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/libgnomevfs2-extra

nvidia driver provided in ubuntu cd is for 2d only, it's nvidia's open source driver, to enable 3d, just install it. to install, there should have a notification in your tray regarding restricted drivers, it will auto download n install, after that a reboot will do.

How should I know If the nvidia 3d driver is already installed or not? I didn't quite notice it, usually just click update from the tray only ohmy.gif .

after i typed ' ndiswrapper -l" i got this message

CODE

tomz@tomz-desktop:~$ ndiswrapper -l
wusb54gsck : driver installed
device (13B1:0026) present
tomz@tomz-desktop:~$

does this mean that the os already detected my hardware or just the driver successfully installed?

Yes you can.
If you are using udev ( which most distro use today ), edit file :
/etc/udev/rules.d/???_persistent-net.rules

**??? different on different Distro

Look for something like:
Example:

CODE
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:40:c2:10:01:ca", NAME="eth0"

And change to

CODE
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:40:c2:10:01:ca", ATTR{type}=="1", NAME="wlan0"

**{address} = Mac address of your net device

If you don't want to reboot. Just remove and reinsert you wireless modules:
ex:
rmmod zd1211rw
modprobe zd1211rw

iwconfig or ifconfig should show your new interface name.
But that's not finish yet. You need to change device name in whatever tools you use to set internet connection.

Yes successfully installed driver and hardware is detected.
If one of it not succesfull, the pci/usb id will not shown.

The last time I used nvidia wiith proprietary driver, nvidia logo is shown when X is started.
The easiest way to check is, look at xorg.conf. If you are using "nvidia" as xorg driver, then it's using proprietary.
If it is "nv", then you are using xorg own driver.

if your reading this message from your linux's monitor, means the display driver is installed, so as your mb's driver, simple as that, no place to get lost in

Guy,

I'm having Hardy Heron 8.04 on my lappy for about a month now. I've been working with twinview without a problem until now. I manage to install few games(termoulous+nexuiz) and update all packages, my PC is not getting stable, but usually i can over come by log-off and login again. Unstable I mean is when I went to jango.com, sound works fine, but after i close jango and start to play games, the sound did came out. I've to re-login again to get the sound. My deluge also sometimes doesnt finish its job and I've to start over again.

Few question I need to ask here. Is updating my packages to the latest is a bad idea? Do i've to check on something before I install/update?

latest as in u did not added any additional repository? if thats the case, its advice to update to latest, but if u added development repo, better becareful with what your doing. what kind of sound card your using? i think its the problem with pulseaudio, try to manually set it in sound server, to pulseaudio, rather than alsa (note: alsa in 8.04 is just a proxy for pulseaudio, which doesnt works very well..buggy)
