A little etiquette advice for Malaysians.

I notice that many Malaysians like to address themselves "I'm Mr X" or "I'm Miss Y". That is the wrong way of doing things. You do not call yourself Mr or Ms or Datuk/Datin/Dr. That is an honorific that people can choose to call you. Just say "I'm X" and if they want to call you "Mr X" they will, but you on the other hand, should address your interviewer as Mr/Ms/Mrs/Dr/etc.

I've seen interviewers who even call say "I'm Mr Blah" and it puts me off completely.

Hi Spanker,

"I'm Mr X" is wrong from the etiquette stand point is because of what culture?? I am sorry to ask such a stupid question but I am too Americanized. On a certain level, if a person is more senior than the person that he is introducing to, he mught choose to do that. Of course, from the American culture standpoint, this is a big no no..

In Malaysia, each companies actually follow a different style and law of etiquette depending on who own and manage the companies. There are American style, British Style, HK Chinese Style, Mainland Chineses style, Taiwanese style, Malay style, Indian style and so on. I used to sell stuff to banks and finances in Malaysia. And, you can tell that different rule of etiquette are applied among the different banks and finance.. We live in a multi-cultural society and it is not safe to take rule of etiquette for granted.

erm, I dunno which culture.. But in Japan, when introducing urself to anyone, putting a san infront of u is plain disrespecting for japanese...

Hi,

The cultural diversity training that I took said that do not assume anything. Always ask a person how they want to be called/addressed.

Hi,

I am sorry to tell you that the last time I do TQM is about 15 years ago and it is probably out of date. First, in general, when you move to other company, the process and procedure will be new, so you have to a new process and procedure anyhow. The new employer will not expect you to knbwo everything. I think as long as they know you have done TQM before, they will believe you can learn their TQM procedure very quickly. But, however, yuo want to be very sure, you try to contact some people in your profession that work in this company to learn more about their TQM procedure.

Hi,

I have a question...

I am a competitive person, not in everything, but particularly in both financial, career and personal developement...

I was afraid to mention this last time during my interview, however, I came across a journal that says some employer prefers ppl to be competitive...

Right now my sense of competition is doing me more good than bad as it motivates me to move faster compared to the rest of the crowd..

Is it worth mentioning in a job interview?

------------
PS, dreamer, I was in MPH today reading "The Millionaire Next Door" book.. It is really very interesting.. Too bad I didn't buy that book as the book seems used and worn out (definitely not worth the price).. Then I bought another book I have been reading there too, "The Warren Buffet Way".. Since u're a book enthusiasts, I believe this book is worth the read (Or maybe you have already read it tongue.gif)

Hi,

What do you mean by competative?? Who or what do you compete with?? Do you have a sense of teamwork??

I am very competative person too. I am competing with myself. I seek improvement for myself everyday. I am an extreme team oriented person. I do not ask whose jobs is it. I will do whatever necessary to make my team successful. I am in a amateur Chinese choir. When you sing together, there are no unimportant person. Everybody has to work together in a very well coordinated way to make beautiful music. What kind of competative person are you??

Competativeness without sense of teamwork is not really helpful in a company.

The very best competative person do not compete with anyone. They seek growth and improvement within themselves.

"The Warren Buffet Way". I did not read that book but I read many other books. Unfortunately, that give me an illusion that I know something about stock market. It costs me 50% of my total savings to learn that I am not capable of playing in stock market. I have neither the knowledge or correct mentality to play the market.

Oh, thanks for your answer...

About the book, yea, not everybody is warren buffet, however, it's interesting to read about how these elites thinks... Perhaps we could adapt some of their thoughts in our everyday life... This is what I aim to achieve by reading these books... smile.gif

It's plain etiquette, I have not in any culture except in malaysia (and maybe Singapore) hear people refer to themselves as 'Mr' or 'Ms', with the exception of 'Dr' and that also is a rarity. People impose the use or 'Mr' or 'Ms' to force respect onto others. Mr/Ms/Mrs is not part of your name and is simply an honorific people choose to give you.

Lets take this out of the interview perspective. I've just met you and you, we introduce ourselves,
You: Hi I'm Mr Dreamer.
Me: Hi I'm spanker, nice you meet you Dreamer
You: That's Mr Dreamer.
Me: Right.... ok then I'll catch you later Dreamer.

See what i mean?

Hi Spanker,

I usually introduce myself as Mr. Dreamer over the phone because I have very high pitch voice ( I am a tenor) and people think that I am a woman over the phone. The Mr. is used to tell people that I am not a woman. But, I do not insist that people call me Mr. Dreamer. I do not object to being call that way either.

I used to do IT hotline support and I get all kind of abuse over the phone by sexist people that think woman is not good at IT.

yeah i kinda agree with you there. When you want to be polite, you tend to sound feminine. I was in the a call center once too, then i'm like wtf i'm talking like a sissy stewardess. So I used a more assertive, yet friendly, tone. Works great, and it sounds professional too.

Hi there.
I have a question.
I was asked to interview 3 days ago. The Hr manager interviewed me and gave me some case study to do. I finished the case study but did not answer a few of the question because the question is totally wrong and i have no idea what it means. After all the Q&A, the HR manager told me that they are actually looking for a person to fill up a higher position of the job that i applied for. She then asked whether i am up to it. I took some time to think and answered her yes. Then she asked me to go back and do some sample answer for the question that she gave me. I sent her back the answer 2 days later (yesterday) and then called her to tell her i already sent her the answer.
During the interview. I was not nervous. I joked with her. She was happy all the time during the interview. She gave me her HP,Fax and office phone number and told me to tell her even though i will not send the answer back to her so that she won't wait for it.
After the interview i told her that i am not from this area so i need a frank answer whether that my expected salary at 1.4k is good. She said that she is not supposed to suggest me an amount for the expected salary but in her experience with 1.4k you cant survive here. Then she gave me back the Questinare and asked me to amend it. I wrote down 1.8k

Did I do anything wrong?

===================================================

On a different subject on the question, where do you see yourself 5 years from now. I answered the interviewe (another interview not the 3 day ago)
I see myself siting at your place. Is it arrogant? This answer. But i was called back for 2nd interview a day later and was interviewed by a person taht will be my direct superior. I waited an hour for the interview to start and the interview went for 30 min. I answered all their question and asked them back on the scope of my job and what i can do or cannot do when working there. Then it ended and i was asked to wait till this tuesday for the answer and see if i am shortlisted.
Wish me luck on both interview! I want the first job.
Btw. if i want to decline a certain job because i got a better offer on another job after they decided to hire me. How do i do that?

Thanks
ini

JSM, do you still read this thread?

I have a question do you agree on Dreamer101 comment on do not disclose current/past salary?

Dreamer101 & JSM, do both of you ask the candidate for their past/current salary during interview?

Have you both ever face the candidate who are not telling the salary?

Hi,

I never ask someone's past and current salary. It is irrelevant to me as a hiring person. I know how much the company is willing to pay for that position and how much that job is worth to the company.

In fact, it will make my job as a hiring manager harder (please noted that I am not speaking from a HR stand point) if someone disclose his/her salary. This is because some companies has a implicit HR policy where you cannot make an offer more than 15% higher than previous salary. I cannot make a higher offer to an applicant even if I want to due to HR policy once the person disclose his/her salary. But, please noted that I am a fair hence unusual and abnormal human being. Most people do not behave like me.

or lower ? because i every manage to get all the interview done but only the salary
