I do agree on Dreamer101 comment on do not disclose your salary when looking for job, (I do not know how does other country) but M'sia, I believe it is hard to not disclose the salary.
As other member posted here, it will treat as not coorperative, too protective, or the company HR policy that you must write down your salary figure in the application form. Or without the figure, you cannot go through the interview at all.

Oh Yeah, Dreamer101, I got question here.
When looking for a job or people, why the interviewer need to know the family history? I mean need to fill up father/mother, sibling name, age, job....
Well, interviewer need to know the background of the candidate, how he/she growth up, what kind of environment the stay, relationship among family......, one interviewer hav told me they need to know how well he/she stay contact with the family, then they can know how good he/she can social with other.
My question is,
1). my relationship with dad are bad, never talk, is it I will not be consider? (which/what job no need communication, no need to talk?) huh.gif
2). does the job relate with my sibling? (some will said they need to know whether
I still need to take care their study or something).
3). But I think as I am an independent individual/object, not related with who when coming to applying job.

I am wonder... and what kind of point frm HR end?

Hi there.
I have a question.
I was asked to interview 3 days ago. The Hr manager interviewed me and gave me some case study to do. I finished the case study but did not answer a few of the question because the question is totally wrong and i have no idea what it means. After all the Q&A, the HR manager told me that they are actually looking for a person to fill up a higher position of the job that i applied for. She then asked whether i am up to it. I took some time to think and answered her yes. Then she asked me to go back and do some sample answer for the question that she gave me. I sent her back the answer 2 days later (yesterday) and then called her to tell her i already sent her the answer.
During the interview. I was not nervous. I joked with her. She was happy all the time during the interview. She gave me her HP,Fax and office phone number and told me to tell her even though i will not send the answer back to her so that she won't wait for it.
After the interview i told her that i am not from this area so i need a frank answer whether that my expected salary at 1.4k is good. She said that she is not supposed to suggest me an amount for the expected salary but in her experience with 1.4k you cant survive here. Then she gave me back the Questinare and asked me to amend it. I wrote down 1.8k

Did I do anything wrong?

===================================================

On a different subject on the question, where do you see yourself 5 years from now. I answered the interviewe (another interview not the 3 day ago)
I see myself siting at your place. Is it arrogant? This answer. But i was called back for 2nd interview a day later and was interviewed by a person taht will be my direct superior. I waited an hour for the interview to start and the interview went for 30 min. I answered all their question and asked them back on the scope of my job and what i can do or cannot do when working there. Then it ended and i was asked to wait till this tuesday for the answer and see if i am shortlisted.
Wish me luck on both interview! I want the first job.
Btw. if i want to decline a certain job because i got a better offer on another job after they decided to hire me. How do i do that?

Thanks
*
Hi,

1) Given that HR tell you that 1.4K is not enough, you wrote back on 1.8K, I think that is okay..

<< I see myself siting at your place.>>

2) I really do not how to say this in a nice fashion. What do you have say something this nasty?? It is really bad manner to say you going to replace someone. You could have something like this:

I am hopeful that I could do as well as you and have a similiar position like you.

Don't this sound a lot of better and you are less likely to offend anyone??

to dreamer

i encounter alot of interview which talking about salary.

for example, they offer me 3k. i say 3.3k to them. so they told me, if after they

conduct interview and find out i really suitable then they call me.

my question is, does they usually give you a salary base on the current market

or lower ? because i every manage to get all the interview done but only the salary

problem. maybe i demand too much ?

thanks you

Hi,

1) Do you really will turn down a job offer just because of $300 per month difference?? Is it really a big deal to you???

2) If it is a good job, $300 more or less will not matter. If $300 matter that much to you, will you be sending a signal that you will leave if someone pay you $300 more??

3) How did you really say you $300 more matter a hell lot also??

IMHO, I will more likely to do and say this.

I really like your company and your job offer. I will accept the job offer at $3,000. But, if it is possible, I would like to be paid at $3,300 per month because of xyz and so on. In any case, I will accept the job offer whether it is $3,000 or $3,300.

In most cases, the way you say $3,300 is probably a hell less tactful that the way I presented.. Am I right???

There are several reasons I have asked as an interviewer about a persons family, they include:

1) I do not want to employ somone who has close family or friends that work for our competitors.
2) It is important for me to know if the candidate has lots of emotional baggage or other problems with their family. The candidate will have to demonstrate that those problems will not affect their job performance.
3) A candidate who has family that are fishermen and taxi-drivers will not provide the same rich environment for an IT professional that a family of people involved in IT will provide. All other things being equal, the son of an Oracle DBA will be given preference to the son of a farmer.

wow such a cruel reality, my dad is a retiree and now is a chicken rice seller, because of this my chances of securing a post will be reduced unsure.gif
I am absolutely dumb-founded, as i have always say that he is what he is now when asked by an interviewer. I think i should have made up some grand father story

The work culture is not mature if that's true.

JSM, do you still read this thread?

I have a question do you agree on Dreamer101 comment on do not disclose current/past salary?

Dreamer101 & JSM, do both of you ask the candidate for their past/current salary during interview?

Have you both ever face the candidate who are not telling the salary?
*
I do agree that disclosing your previous salary could have some negative impacts. But like most things in life, disclosing your salary could in some situations be positive for the applicant. Let's say your previous salary was 5000RM/month and the interviewer is looking to fill a position they value at only 2000RM/month. That is a huge disconnect that is surely not to be resolved if the position is later offered at 2000RM/month. On the other hand, if the previous salary of 5000RM/month was know to the interviewer they might undertake to learn why the person was paid a lot more than they expected and they may be able to find a more suitable position or make a more appropriate offer. Ideally the candidate would be able to communicate their value, capabilities, skills and knowledge without disclosing their previous salary but few candidates can actually communicate well in an interview and more knowledge is gained by the interviewer "interrogating" applicants.

When I have had "interviews", I sell myself proactively leaving very few questions for my interviewers except "when can you start?".

Thankz dreamer. Incidently enough. I have been called back this morning by the second interview and told that i have been given the job ( or something to the similar effect)But the 1st job (where i need to amend my salary) i still have yet to get reply from them.
I have a question. If i want to decline a job offer after they have called me. How do i do that? Furthermore. Is it wise to negotiate on the salary after they comfirmed with me the job position?

Thankz

Hi,
<< Is it wise to negotiate on the salary after they comfirmed with me the job position? >>

1) Absolutely not wise.

<<If i want to decline a job offer after they have called me.>>

2) Somehow, I do not consider a phone call as a valid job offer. But, if you are sure that you want to reject the job offer no matter what, telling people ASAP is probably the best way to go.

Hi,

I have to respectfully disagree with jsm on this.

1 ) My family runs a small business. I have been depositing money into bank and dealing with small business stuff since 8 years old. That provides me better or equal exposure on the application side of IT than a son of DBA.

2) B was a son of vegetable farmer. Now, he is a MD of a large international bank. So, I do not see any permanent disadvantage of being bornt in a family of vegetable farmer.

@dreamer So you would not suggest that I ask how much salary after i meet up with them and enquire whether i can get more then that?
So a valid job offer is how?

Hi,

A valid job offer is something in writing. If you are offer a job, ask how much is the salary, what is the working hours, what is the benefit, what is the bonus and so on. Ask for an offer letter and say you will get back with a decision in X number of days.

If the salary is less than what you desire, see my earlier post and how to ask for more in a tactful fashion..

Hi,

This is what this thread about. There is no reason why the questions should only be from the interviewer.
