The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

Fabregas - Arshavin won us the Tottenham tie

While plaudits have rightly come the way of players such as Jack Wilshere, Henri Lansbury and Kieran Gibbs after Tuesday’s resounding win at White Hart Lane, Cesc Fabregas believes the introduction of another star was a vital ingredient in our extra-time success.

“I think Andrey Arshavin made the big difference for us,” he says in his captain’s notes for tomorrow’s Matchday Programme.

“I believe he won us the game when he came on. He played the two passes that led to the two penalties in extra-time, then he scored the last goal himself. He can win a game.”

QUOTE(realman @ Sep 25 2010, 10:51 AM)
Arsène Wenger: my record for nurturing talent at Arsenal is second to none

With Arsenal announcing record profits on Friday, Arsène Wenger made the bold claim that his results have been even more impressive and suggested that "no one else in the world" had produced as many top-level footballers as he had throughout his career.

The 60 year-old said that some other managers acted as if it "looks like we are in a business where the quality is to lose money" but insisted that although his philosophy was to behave in a "safe way" he was also not afraid to spend big if he needed to.

"I have the wrong reputation," the Arsenal manager said. "I'm not afraid to spend money. But the job of a manager is not to spend as much money [as he can]. We make a profit because we don't spend – simple as that.

"What is unbelievable is that people reproach me for making a profit, but those who lose money – no one says a word."

Wenger, whose side face West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, cited the example of his summer signing, Marouane Chamakh, who moved to the Emirates "for free" from Bordeaux because he was out of contract.

"To get Chamakh for free – instead of getting credit, you get accused of getting him for free and people ask, 'Why didn't you spend £20 million for him?' If I buy him two years ago for £20 million, it's OK. But you get him for free and it's, 'Oh, he didn't spend money'."

Apart from the fact that the Moroccan striker would not have cost £20 million two years ago – and was available for £7 million last year – Arsenal supporters may argue that Wenger's determination to wait sometimes hampers the side. Last season, for example, they cried out for a central striker. This season it is an experienced goalkeeper.

However, it is Wenger's work in developing young players, starting with the academy at Monaco and then at Arsenal, that he is most passionate about. He argued that his philosophy made it easier for him to resist the "pressure" to spend.

"If I buy players, Jack Wilshere doesn't come through. So you cannot have everything, and I know that, and I'm long enough in this job to have a development policy to educate the players.

"The most difficult thing is to play them and to stand up for it, and nobody else in the world [does this as much as me]. One day I'll give you the list of those at the top-level who have made careers with me and you will see. You will be absolutely astonished."

More than any other manager or club? "Of course," Wenger said. "How do I know? Take the list of the players who started here. If you go back it's unbelievable."

He reeled off the names of Cesc Fabregas – Barcelona may dispute that – Ashley Cole, Johan Djourou, Philippe Senderos, Kieron Gibbs, Alex Song, Abou Diaby, Gael Clichy and Wilshere and then added: "When I go back to Monaco" the likes of Lilian Thuram and Emmanuel Petit. He neglected to add Thierry Henry.

But what about Manchester United? "Not recently," he claimed, although Sir Alex Ferguson may have a case to challenge Wenger's overall claim. "When I arrived [in England in 1996] nearly all their team had started [at United])."

Barcelona? "Barcelona has, but I speak about me," Wenger added, implying that the production line at Barça was institutional – not dependent on a particular coach – while he had imposed his approach on Monaco and then Arsenal.

"People say always to buy," Wenger said. "But you cannot make careers and lives for players and on top of that buy every time you have an injury."

Not that he does not make sure he knows how much money is available should be choose to spend it. "Always," he said, "always, always."

To Snap Up Barcelona Starlet Oriol Romeu – Report

Barcelona have placed a £30 million price tag on Arsenal transfer target Oriol Romeu.

Reports suggested earlier this month that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was interested in bringing the Spanish youngster to the Emirates.

However, according to talkSPORT, the Frenchman will have to shelve out £30 million to buy-out starlet’s contract with Spanish giants Barcelona.

The 18-year-old plays for Barcelona’s B-team but faces the difficult task of trying to break into the senior squad as Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Xavi currently fill the midfield.

Wenger was hoping to snatch the youngster away from Spain in a similar move to that when he brought Cesc Fabregas to the Premier League as a teenager.

However, due to the substantial price tag for the Spaniard, the Gunners boss may be forced to pull out of a possible move.

However, due to the substantial price tag for the Spaniard, the Gunners boss may be forced to pull out of a possible move.

denilson has a knack of scoring long range strikes, or at least through a deflection.
one extra goal scoring threat there.

The market for senior players is already inflated, now an attempt to inflate the teenage players market pulak? The last thing we need now is some stupid rich sugar daddies buying teenagers at these outrages prices.

Nothing wrongs with what he said. In fact he was kind to him.

He said Wenger was known as the professor, quiet and observant on the touchline. But nowadays even he shouts a lot.

QUOTE
"When Arsene first came to England I remember reading articles and they said that he was like a professor watching the game," said Redknapp.

"All the other nutters were jumping up and down shouting and screaming, hollering and hooting - and this man is not like those idiots. He just sits there and is studying every move that goes on on the pitch like chess. They didn't lose a game all season.
Nutters
"Now he has joined the nutters, you know! In fact, he is one of the key nutters! That is the tension that you are under. It has affected him now."

Redknapp continued: "He is no longer sitting there now. He is up there arguing with everybody and gets into it all.

"I think he has changed. He was the quietest man of the lot at one point.

"I don't have any problems with him at all, he's always been good. Sometimes I go into his office at Arsenal."

Read the whole article, especially the quotes and not just focus on the title which is very misleading and could mean anything.

Is only human for Wenger to shout & rant.

All managers did that. Why didn't Redknapp commented on them.
Why pick on Wenger?

Is like purposely creating an issue out of nothing!

What about when mancini wrestling the ball from moyes?
No one called Mancini a nut case.

i have to say that ManCity midfield line totally destroyed Chelsea. Their tackles all most of it spot on and non-stop breaking their possession.

Woohoo now is Arsenal turn to close the gap before thinking of them.

Yeah the lack of creativity is really pain to see . Shows how much more creativity we had in the past , even with Wilshere on the pitch . Not to mention he sloppy touches , ughh

Diaby annoys me to no end. He slows down the game unnecessarily and offers no creativity. I would rather have Denilson even. doh.gif

Rosicky, Wilshere and Denilson can all do a much better job.

dont know about you guys, instead of creativity
i thought the team look dull and tired, no energy
we can create chance, actually we did, but we created chances not the Arsenal way.

theres no need to make any changes, yet i feel
AW is going to them a good HT talk
hopefully it will inspire them, get the team awake.

we will see a better 2nd half,
id take any scrappy goal at this moment

WBA past 2-3 matches, was good. they are very confident at the moment,
need to break that steel!

Sigh , it's not that AW didn't want to field Wilshere , but he need some rest for playing that much already . However , I do think either Denilson or Rosciky should be subbed in ASAP after Diaby sucking .

i hate the fact that all our players in the center tries nothing in the center..
the only player that tries something is nasri....
the rest always pass the ball to sagna/clitchy/wingers to cross in to westbrom players..

2nd goal and 3rd goal cannot be tolerated,Almunia,is the time for you to leave Arsenal, you might have a better future at other club, but not in here,we have been trophy less for 6 years,we cant afford any goal jokes from you anymore.

It's Arsenal problem . They lack the desire to win , bad pass , bad play by a few players especially Diaby , Clichy etc. before the West Brom x2 goals .

Seriously , the midfield is so much better after Wilshere was introduced . This kid far surpassed the freaggin Diaby .

Managed to watch the goals conceded.

I must say that Almunia should be blamed for 2 of these goals. The other (the first goal conceded) was defensive error (too many players challenged the passer)

shouldnt have started diaby so soon. shouldve played denilson if arsene wanted to rest wilshire. starting eboue was a mistake also.

when vela came in and he played on the left, why did arshavin play centre? i think it wouldve been better if it were the other way around.

and song wanted to attack so much. he should realize his main duty is as the defensive midfielder.

haih i just got back from england today and had to see this. haih

1st goal..dunno who to blame
2nd goal .konsielny and almunia.i don't see he is worth 10 million.gallas is 10x better than him,he also made a mistake in a match againts bolton.i like it when wenger change him with vela.almunia should hve saved the 2nd goal,but..wtf
3rd goal, defend are still arsenal problem, even wba defended far more better.almunia to blame,if he know he cannot get the ball,he should have go to his goal line, wtf he is doing.

and as usual, when arsenal a goal down, they play seriously, they should do this in 1st half.

i can see arsenal losing to chelsea after this and fabregas confirms out this season maybe this jan .hopefully arsenal could do well in ecc, maybe that could keep fabregas

chamakh sux too.luckily he free.bendter is better than him

Huge FATIGUE FACTOR

ALMUNIA - great penalty save, but over confident after that and boom
KOSCIELNY - SLEEPING
SONG - PLS BLACK HAIR AGAIn
DIABY - DONT PLAY
SAGNA - BE A STRIKER NEXT TIME PLS
CHAMAKH - he looks too freaking tired
CLICHY - man if gibbs is fit, you won't get to play forever anymore
EBOUE - poor but the best crosser
ARSHAVIN - HELO??

I am totally speechless to see the score 3-0 until Nasri single handedly nearly win us something.

I am just too disappointed. I really doubt i can sleep tonight.

Huge FATIGUE  FACTOR

ALMUNIA - great penalty save, but over confident after that and boom
KOSCIELNY - SLEEPING
SONG - PLS BLACK HAIR AGAIn
DIABY - DONT PLAY
SAGNA - BE A STRIKER NEXT TIME PLS
CHAMAKH - he looks too freaking tired
CLICHY - man if gibbs is fit, you won't get to play forever anymore
EBOUE - poor but the best crosser
ARSHAVIN - HELO??

I am totally speechless to see the score 3-0 until Nasri single handedly nearly win us something.

I am just too disappointed. I really doubt i can sleep tonight.

Something must be done, if you look at the table all team stay very closely with each other. That make the BPL competitive and spice a few drama but why it come with expense of Arsenal? Bad luck? Maybe the player a bit tired because most of them play non stop even at Carling Cup.

u know, the worst thing for spurs is that they lost to the bottom most team of the table, it is worst anyway biggrin.gif arsenal played quite below standard.. keep losing ball from passing. eboue and diaby really dunno how to say, almunia also. But then nasri is really good, i hope he can play alongside when fabregas come back, it will be very powerful attacking team. Nasri got nice dribbling skill and finishing..

Even the old 'invincible' line up also have some gloomy part back in the day. Cheer up, win or loss is a part of football. Nothing fix in the match unless the match itself was fixed.

nasri was sux in freekick since last season.i dunno why he still take it
arshavin have a chance,he could score bcause he got power in his shot just like vermalen but always nasri3.
rosicky sure shoot it higgh
fabregas also,i dun think so,the goal againts spurs for me was lucky,i think thats the only goal he score from free kick

I have to say pity to Liverpool, they don't deserved to be at the bottom there. No thanks to their owner which sucks of course.

I won't blame Arsenal injury, i still see many 1st teamer in the team that started on day 1, so to lose the match thanks to injury is a bad excuses.

But when the old invincible line up lost, they lost with a fight. Look at all the 3 goals conceded today. .. it is as though Koscielny and Almunia combo to let them score open free goals ... disgraceful is understatement for a team which is challenging the title.

This line up is not a champion material at all. To give away cheap goals, not one, not two but Three .. i don't know what is this blind optimism from some people is about.

I don't see why I should trust Almunia. Damn those statistics proves he is not good enough to be in ARSENAL! He keeps letting down our moral when it comes the GK as the LAST DEFENDER situation. GK should have a very good command and vision within his area. Unlikely Almunia didn''t have those, and I DO DEMAND FROM 2 YEARS AGO, WE HAVE TO GET A DECENT GOALKEEPER.

It's pointless no matter how much the forwards scored if our team keep letting balls slips in the net!

On last week game against Sunderland, the defense fought really hard but the attack is really poor.

Against WBA is the total opposite doh.gif

What the heck happen to Koscielny today. If he is not fit, he should not play in the first place.

But remind you that line up was built more than 10 years to become a genuine force in BPL although they done not too great on UCL. This is not an excuse but it is fact. But i agree the invincible era player always play to win and they have make countless amount of comeback and won the match or draw in the end. This side is a champion material but lack toughness in mentality because nobody in the side has yet to posses glare of Patrick Vieira or Tony Adams. The former captain always act like general in battlefield, i don't consider Henry and Fabregas as true leader right now.

Henry does possessed the true striker talent. Fabregas does possessed good quality playmaker. But the captain is the one player that can foresee the gameplay on the field.

Clichy seem has fall from grace. He supposed to be the replacement for Ashley Cole and even big club such as Real Madrid interested in him some year ago. Almunia - no comment even at his former club he isn't the 1st choice but got to thank his service for Barca match. Regarding Arshavin maybe it was a tactical decision for him not to track back because he isn't good at defending.

I'm not sure why is he being rated so high. I've only seen him play for Arsenal, in fact all of his game. I find him lack of confidence, struggling at times, and also often being caught. I don't think he's that good. Still think Almunia is a decent GK despite his mistakes today, but i don't think Arsenal's defensive line is ever good enough to win the league.

I'm surprised that both Rosicky and Wilshere were benched, and Diaby was partnering Song.

I agree that this is a wake up call for us, and the season is not over, but you need to understand this. Games like this we shouldn't be throwing points especially playing at home. I can tell you one thing, Arsenal is not going to win the title with the squad filled with injury prone players. I feel so disappointed with the result and performance. Next up Chelsea at SB. With Konshitty in the line up, i really have doubts !

i hope gibbs faster recover... and put more pressure on AW, and AW please dont use french as reason to put clichy as first XI.. i hate to see it....

This game is not a wake-up call anymore. The wake-up call already happened 3-4 years ago.

If this is a wake-up call , it is as though we calling a lazy fatty to wake up, and then he goes to sleep again, and after making him wake up again for few mins, he went back to sleep again.

Forever sleepy.

we need everybody! not only fabregas
we need RvP and Walcott as well.

the team links and plays well when they are as one
its not right to say we dont play well without fabregas

what if we got fabregas and dont have arshavin and nasri
say we have a whole season fit fabregas, and unfit arshavin and nasri.
results?
same outcome, we will be praying for the other to come back..who will fabregas pass the ball to when there is no runner?
so what i am really trying to say here is for those that keep saying we need fabregas fabregas, we need everybody mang!

p/s: not u buzzfizz..just linking my point tongue.gif

arshavin plays really well when he got fabregas behind him
same goes for RvP partnership
thats what we highlight the importance of keeping the team together for years to come
cause they have already the connection between them, the bond of footballers

thats why its so frustrating, to have most of our key players injured
mehh, dont want to talk about injuries no more
looking forward to next week match.

Koscielny and Clichy were.. how do i say this ? made too many errors.

Koscielny let Peter Odingwe have a run at Almunia and caused a penalty which later he saved.
Clichy left too much space on the left . hmmmmm.

It was a mistake by Almunia. But where were the defending, or even the close up. Konscielny was just standing there rather than closing him down. I'll say for that goal, the root was Konscielny. But Almunia should have done better. If u ask me who's to blame for the 2nd, its definitely Konscielny.

No offense to the fans here, why do i have this "feeling" that our squad is not strong enough, not good enough to win the title. I don't know about you all, after i've watched Chelsea, united, City, i don't think the squad is as strong as them. I never had this feeling during the days of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires and Ljungberg. We lack of consistency, lack the mentality to win. Diaby went missing in the game, and it took Wenger 60+mins to realise that. I seriously think with the present of Wilshere and Rosicky would have change the game despite our poor defensive display.

Partly, i believe a lil on Wenger's fault on the line up against WBA. We were over confident, and this what happen.

If we ever had a football tournament for the injured between teams, Arsenal would win every game hands down. Not only do we have a constantly ample supply of injured players, we constantly have the best ones out injured too. *closing my eyes and trying to imagine Ramsey scoring a beautiful goal with his broken leg in said tournament..ooh*

We lack of physical present. By looking at it, BPL turns out to be more physical league compared to any other league. Our squad filled with injury prone players whistling.gif

+1

our injuries is our greatest opponent over the past 3-4 years
it has grown, happen for so long....so much so that it is no longer called an injury crisis
its like having a living cancer inside of Arsenal, growing and growing and growing
it doesn't seem to go away, seems like there is no cure to it at the moment

Yep. Can't have all that we want can we? Arsenal is still a force to be reckoned with though. What happened to day was a malfunction. However, I believe Arsene's decision to remove Kos for Vela was a bad gamble. Not that I rate Kos very highly, but with Song not on song, and Clichy getting sleepy, removing a CB could spell doom at the back. And worse yet, Vela simply went invisible not long after he came on.

Abysmal performance.. The moment we conceded the third goal I gave up. What angered me the most is Wenger took 60+ mins to realize Diaby wasn't fit today!! And Song just everywhere instead of doing his job properly. For Clichy, oh my, what happened to him?! I prefer Gibbs nowadays, at least Gibbs has better awareness instead of Clichy!!! Almunia.. nvm.

Its just a sad day for Arsenal. I hope these players would look at themselves and thought of what went wrong, and what they had given back to the fans. Arsenal jersey is not for them to jog around on the pitch.. We expect more!!!!

I too tend to over-glorify the untouchables at times, but to be fair they had their share of off days.

Anyway, quick analysis of the game:

Good:
1. Samir Nasri. I don't think he'll ever become a playmaker like Fabregas, but forcing him to become one will only hold back his other strengths. Samir is best used in a free attacking role where he is allowed to dribble and shoot; and for that to work even better we'll need a Fabregas-like player to feed him balls. Arshavin/Jack/Robin/even Rambo will be able to do so.

2. Chelsea and Spurs also lost hence the gap remains the same.

3. Laci is badass in his tackles... it's been a while since we've got someone who kicks hard.

4. Apart from the 2 goal freakish moments, WBA couldn't break us down despite us not being at our best; but that doesn't take away how awesome they look compared to other Allardycesque teams. Quick, accurate, passing and very tight man marking actually resembles how MU always play against us.

Bad:
1. Absolutely pathetic team performance - we had no midfield, the defence was in shambles, and most important of all the players didn't cover for each other. Too many gaping holes throughout the pitch.

2. When you hit the post 3 times you know it's not your day.

3. I was hoping for Arsene to give our lads a bollocking at half time, but it doesn't seem like he did; or if he did they didn't take it on board.

Individual performances:
Al - I thought he did pretty well initially - quick to come out to sweep, saved a penalty which is one of his strengths; until he did a Fabianski for WBA's second. Still our best keeper in the team to be honest - the main problem lies in our collective defensive abilities, not the keeper.

Bak - Sloppy, out of position too frequently, horrible crosses.

Clichy - Same as Bak. Still capable of amazing interceptions, but defensive lapses are once again apparent.

Kos & Laci - individually they are pretty good but as a partnership it'll still take time to work.

Song - Appalling. Didn't shield the defence like he normally does, and made lousy, misplaced tackles all afternoon. Produced quite a number of marauding runs into the box but that should have been Diaby's job, not his.

Diaby - Dilly-dally Diaby. Does anyone still not see why I insist that Denilson offers much more balance to our possession game? Denilson provides anticipation, interception, and passing options; Tommy provides the dynamic drive; Jack offers aggression and trickery; Abou unfortunately does nothing.

Nasri - Can't really fault him after trying to single-handedly holding up a poor team on his own. Missed a couple of glorious chances, but took his brace well. Love you Samir.

Andy - Worked hard, but unfortunately nothing came around. Got smacked by the WBA defenders all afternoon. Yet his decision-making, runs, and vision make him the first choice on our left wing; not Vela.

Eboue - All flash and no cash. Manu works best as a marauding defender bombing in from the right flank; not a free-role playmaker.

Chamakh - very limited ammo for him, but otherwise like his other mates it was a mediocre performance from Maroune too.

Vela - good intentions and vision, but overall bad execution which often gave away the ball. Nothing to shout about.

Jack - Should have started the game instead of Diaby but probably needed the rest. For someone so small, it's surprising to see him flying into tackles and kick the shit out of the opponents. Lovely ball possession and passes, but at his tender age Arsene will want to rotate him to avoid injuries/burnout.

Tommy - decent, but too little time to do anything spectecular. Not that he would be able to achieve much when everyone else bar Nasri is having a stinker.

Conclusion - A game that we never deserved to win. In retrospect, had we shown the kind of urgency in the final 15 minutes throughout the whole game, we might have gotten at least a point or even win it.

Right now, 0 points for how we played; 0 points is what we get.

It's been a long time since I have commented on this board. Been quite busy lately.

What can I say about the game? Nothing as I didn't watch the game, but it is a shock as to the scoreline. While looking at the lineup,I was not that surprised that we lost.

Some of our players, really, doesn't deserve 1st team place at all right now. Sagna and Clichy is having a fluctuating form right now. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. I really think Clichy should be rested as he seems kind of jaded to me in the last few games. For Sagna,he is better that Ebue unfortunately,so prefer him then Eboue.

Diaby; he should be put in reserve right now. Never seen him perform at a great level since he joins Arsenal. Afew good games here and there just doesn't cut it for a player that is getting older by the years.

Arshavin; he too,in my opinion, really needs to be put on the bench for a few games. Let Rosicky or Nasri play in front of him. He sometimes just waste the ball with his runs and over complicated pass. Don't get me wrong, he is a great player. Just, I think he needs to be rested for a bit. He is being more erratic more that usual.

Chamakh,Koscielny,Squillaci; they are still being integrated into the team,so no wonder some mistakes will be done. Though Koscielny really need to step up. If not,he will be our 3rd CB,after Squillaci and Vermaelen.

Vela; he needs to step up and really get into the game. I hate it when he was sub in, lively for a few minutes, then fade into the background.

That is my rant. This are all in my opinion,so feel free to comment on it.

First half performance even though still levelled at 0-0, was really disappointing. Possesion lost cheaply.....resulted in our CB's had hard times defended our penalty box. Song did not link well with Diaby. I'd prefer Song-Denilson combo.

2nd half, Diaby should have been subbed earlier....The introduction of Wilshere and Rosicky made our defence tighter with both players tracking and closing down WBA players. Wilshere despite a small frame guy compared to Diaby was more agressive than the latter....

Credit also goes to WBA. They really worked as a unit. Defended well as a team. Every time our player held the ball, at least 2 of their players would come and close down. Just like what barca did in UCL against us last season.

But I believed Arsenal will bounce back after this game.....Thia game will remind our players that any team can be a threat....and not to take any game easily anymore and feel complacent.

I have had enough on Almunia, Diaby (diaby for the past 3season already). This 2 fuxking fellows are just waiting for weekly paid, looks like an old man jogging on field (imo, diaby is worse than Almunia, dont have the initiative to win back ball at all). The worst ever arsenal 1st team player in history. Please look at yourself, mr Diaby, compare to wilshere, wtf are you?

I don't see why I should trust Almunia. Damn those statistics proves he is not good enough to be in ARSENAL! He keeps letting down our moral when it comes the GK as the LAST DEFENDER situation. GK should have a very good command and vision within his area. Unlikely Almunia didn''t have those, and I DO DEMAND FROM 2 YEARS AGO, WE HAVE TO GET A DECENT GOALKEEPER.

It's pointless no matter how much the forwards scored if our team keep letting balls slips in the net!

Yeah that too especially for picking 2 unfit players in Diaby and Eboue then taking ages to realize that they were doing nothing in the game.

Oh and subbing out Koscielny for a striker which inevitably led to the third goal for Westbrom making a comeback so much harder.

Should wenger use vito mannone instead of almunia and fabiasnki for the next match?im totally worry about next match because my housemate are Mu and Chelsea fans..huhuhu

Wenger should change tactical last night instead of playing crossing tinggi but attack from center or crossing rendah. If we have bendtner or RVP, we can play crossing like that time clichhy and sagna must improve their cross first..

WBA is now fifth on the table only 1 point behind City, MU and Arsenal. I doubt they can keep up their good run throughout the season, but it's a very good start nonetheless.

Didn't watch the game but if read from what most people written here it must have been something to do with our defence. I don't understand this, other teams parking bus and we need to play passing around midfield to open up their space. While other teams want us to park our bus there so they can penetrate deeper into our weakling defence. That's why Arsene din really solve our problem there.

No, not just the defence. It was pretty much every department.

Defence - the flanks were easily exposed
Midfield - Song + Diaby didn't work. Diaby flopped again and Song tried to be Diaby. Double flops.
Offence - Pathetic crosses throughout. When there were shots, WBA men were always in the way.

How did we transformed, from a team that scored at will against supposedly tough opponents, to chasing the ball around with supposedly lesser opponents & then losing to a team which haven't won at home in Arsenal in like.. 23 years ? Only Arsenal can do such things...

Consistency is sorely lacking.... injury to first team players is not an excuse, as if other teams dun have any problems...

We need to be consistent. Until we can be consistent, dun even dream of winning any title. That's a fact. Anybody who says otherwise is only lying to themselves. Consistency. Period.

denilson comment from twitter "I wish I could've helped the team today, but unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity.Heads up, there's a lot of games left.thanks to all".
*
Good boy.

QUOTE(kazek @ Sep 26 2010, 11:48 AM)
Yeah that too especially for picking 2 unfit players in Diaby and Eboue then taking ages to realize that they were doing nothing in the game.

Oh and subbing out Koscielny for a striker which inevitably led to the third goal for Westbrom making a comeback so much harder.
*
It was a gamble. At 2-0 down we need all the attacking players we can to chase the game. Had Arsene not subbed Vela in people are going to complain that he didn't go for a comeback.

Diaby and Eboue didn't really work in midfield yesterday and Song's form was appalling. However it is apparent that Arsene was resting players like Jack and Tommy for the CL travel in midweek; yet we should have been able to beat WBA at home with those players. Again, it was a game where we didn't perform hence can't complain about the result. Give WBA some credit too for playing good football.

QUOTE(sakaito @ Sep 26 2010, 05:48 PM)
This is a game we couldve won with a world class goalie. When the whole team is at a lost, usually the goalie steps up and make saves and lift others. I miss pak lehmann...
*
Al is being singled out here. The second goal was a dreadful flop which we've seen many keepers make during the WC and Reina too during our first game but of course that doesn't mean Al is not at fault; however collectively as a team we failed to shut WBA down, no point pushing all the blame to Al. Al has been superb for the past few games and I don't see anyone shooting him back then. Haters gonna hate, man.

Whether Vito or Woj would do better is debatable, although neither one would have an easy day if the defence in front of them as crap as yesterday.

1 more thing about Song , what's up with him bombing forward and trying Fabregas like ? Not sure if it's tactical order from AW or its his failed idea .

He should do what he was best at last season , defending and winning the ball back , not friggin lost the possession every time . mad.gif

somebody has to do it right? Samir and Abou (his partners in the middle) were not doing it, and our attacks were close to non-existent during the period before Jack and Tomas came in. if anything can be learned from last night is that at least 1 of Tomas, Jack and Cesc has to play in order for us to play our game

Song is a damn fine midfielder. But ever since he scored that goal (against Bolton? can't remember), he seems to have put on an attacking cap and boots and shook off those defensive qualities in him that made him a tough wall in front of our back line. So much so that his tackles becomes clumsy. With our general light-weightness, we need that original Song. Badly.

soccernet f'n bias. MU poor performance against Bolton despite the draw but they keep making headline as "Owen impact rescue United", compared with "Baggies shot down Gunners" as the main headline with Jerome Thomas pic despite Chelsea lost against City supposed to be the more big news. Looking at our October fixtures, I feel worried. Whole lot of tough matches. Perhaps West Ham should be the easier one, but the others... even Birmingham are not going to be easy. And IINM, Carling Cup game (away at Newcastle) is somewhere at the end of October too. Got to be strong flex.gif .

The world is never fair, we have to accept that.

And as a matter of fact, every pundits/anti-arsenal/medias will never want so-call "kids" or teams that never spend much to win anything.

Wenger - The team had no electricity

Arsène Wenger admits his team suffered a 'power cut' at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Arsenal went into the game against West Bromwich Albion on the back of a magnificent win at Tottenham in midweek and with high hopes of cutting Chelsea's lead at the top of the Premier League to one point after the champions lost at Manchester City.

But Wenger's side were a pale shadow of their usual selves and Albion took full advantage, scoring three times in 23 second-half minutes to build what proved to be an unassailable lead, despite a late brace from Samir Nasri.

Wenger was left to ponder the reasons for one of the most listless performances of his 14-year tenure and promised to make changes for Tuesday's Champions League trip to Partizan Belgrade.

"What is the most frustrating is that there was no electricity there," said the manager.

"We had lost a generator and then it becomes difficult to play football. I knew after the first five minutes, you saw that it was all flat. It is unusual for us because we are usually a team that has energy. We were just not there. I can't remember the last time [we were like that]. It was mysterious what happened.

"West Brom played very well but it is the usual defending we get when we play. We made really basic errors defensively if you analyse any of the goals. I just feel that from back to forward we were flat and poor.

"It won't stay on my mind too long," he added. "We never forget it but we play on Tuesday night so of course we have to analyse what happened. I don't know yet [how many changes I will make for the Partizan game] but there will be some changes, that is for sure."

Almunia injury puts Fabianski in goal

By Richard Clarke

Lukasz Fabianski will be in goal for Arsenal at Partizan Belgrade on Tuesday night.

The Polish keeper is taking the gloves because Manuel Almunia picked up an elbow injury during the penalty incident against West Brom on Saturday.

Arsène Wenger relayed the news before training on Monday morning. During that session he will decide if Kieran Gibbs can board the plane for Serbia. The left back is still recovering from the badly bruised foot he suffered at Tottenham last Tuesday.

“We have Manual Almunia out,” said the manager. “He has a problem with his elbow. He caught it when he made the penalty on Saturday.

“Also Kieran Gibbs has a test in training today.”

Almunia came under scrutiny after the 3-2 defeat at Emirates Stadium over the weekend but Wenger made it clear that, but for this injury, he was not going to leave out his No 1.

“No,” the Frenchman responded. “[The keeper] is always the easy target, the easy scapegoat. But we win together and we lose together even if people think he made a mistake on the second goal.”

www.arsenal.com

1 point enough this wednesday and if almunia not fit by this saturday, then god saves arsenal.

I like how Arsene handles this. Although in reality he recognizes the goalkeeping problem, he defends Almunia in front of the media. And behind the scene;
Arsene: Manuel, for your mistake, you will be dropped for the next match.
Manuel: Dropped, boss?
Arsene: Elbow injury.
Manuel: Owh, okay.

Haha what's the difference anyway!! More goals will be conceded and more games will be lost with either of them between the post.

Yeah, why don't Wenger tells it the way it is? The players is too pampered until some of them don't look interested to win the game.

Haha what's the difference anyway!! More goals will be conceded and more games will be lost with either of them between the post.

Yeah, why don't Wenger tells it the way it is? The players is too pampered until some of them don't look interested to win the game.
*

Ethics. God knows what kind of treatment these players got in the dressing room after such performances. If Wenger wants to be straight with the players, he does it behind the media. What benefit there is if he kills Almunia in front of the media?

Well, with this 'ethics' we have players that doesn't give their all because they know they will be in squad for the next match. Why can't Wenger just said Almunia has been dropped because of poor performance (or something in that sense) instead of giving excuses. It makes it look like all of them is undroppable unless it was injury.

Is TR7 Injured? He was playing well for us the past few games and suddenly lost his place to Diaby? WTH?

Anyway, despite Manny contribution to the 2nd goal, he did well for us the past few games. The Koci need to get the blame as well because he isnt closing down dat fella and let him get a powerful shot at goal.

Let flappibianski manning the goal (against chelsea) is as good as conceding the match.
Mr Flappy is undecisive, error-prone & always getting cold feet, niasing..my blood is boiling.. mad.gif

You really think what he says in front of the cameras are exactly what he says to the squad? I'm damn sure Wenger have told Almunia why he's 'injured'. I'm damn sure they have all got the grilling they deserved after those disjointed performances. Revealing all to media on the other hand is just not a very smart move. After all, we do know we are not the darlings of the media world.

When was the last time Arsenal beat Chelsea? I don't remember. Perhaps before Drogba joined Chelsea.

I don't see how Arsenal can win if Chelsea is determined to bounce back from their defeat. I foresee it would be Boys vs Men , just like most of the Chelsea v Arsenal games previously.

The last time? Not long ago... during the 2008-2009 season. But Drogba wasn't playing. biggrin.gif

The 3 names which would cost Arsenal to lose the game are Drogba, Essein & Cech. History speaks for itself.....

We'll bomb the Bridge later. For now, let's destroy Partizan Belgrade. Check out the squad for the match;

The Belgrade Invasion Troop

Wojciech and Gibbs among others will travel with the squad. I wonder if Gibbs will start since Clichy is in the team too. Anyone praying for Fabianski to flop big time so that Wojciech can step in? I haven't seen Wocheh in action so I'll just pray for Fabianski to keep his calm.

Since flappiski is a gamble, why not juz try Wojcy? rclxub.gif Plus this young fella wants to impress all the gooners so freaking bad.

I believe some will start calling for AW head if tmr fabiaski is starting and Arsenal went on to lose that game.

Rather than wishing Fabianski flop or get himself injured in the next match, I wish him to have a great game to build up the form and momentum against Chelsea. In short, I prefer an on-form Fabianski compared to Szczesny or Vito who do not have much matches under their belts.

I admit our problems with GK but it is the time to hope for the better with what we have - not the other way around.

But seriously, (call me chicken-out or something but ) I am nervous with our match against Chelsea sad.gif

Whoa, I agree with everything except the 'build momentum for Chelsea' part. I just don't trust Fabianski that much to have him play Chelsea at the Bridge. He looks more likely to wet his pants seeing a big a$$ Ivorian charging his way than anything else. We need Almunia for Chelsea.

He did seems to be injured himself during the match. I think it was during the penalty save and the commentator also mentioned that.

No no no. We want the team to win. If Fabianski become very good tonight, then it's good - I still don't want him for Chelsea though. But if he flops, I want him to flop hard. So hard that Wenger will give him a permanent head injury and drop him to the bottom of the pecking order.

Just to make us happy with our current goalkeeping situation, here's one idiotic goalkeeper that we're lucky not to get.

i think for tomorrow game...
arsenal can win like 3-1...

but for sunday's game against Chelsea... quite scary..
but chelsea also has their problem..
so maybe we can get at least one point from the match...
draw is better than defeat..
if can win then we can party smile.gif
yeahhh smile.gif

the line up

---- Fabianski---
Sagna--squilicci--koscielny---clichy
--song---
Rosicky---wilshere--nasri--
chamakh --- vela ---

arshavin might be rested for Chelsea game smile.gif
chamakh has to play there is no other main striker.. smile.gif

Fabregas imo will be back for Chelsea game at least on the bench. Walcott most probably won't but won't be long before return.

Chelsea have lots of injury too so it will be quite fair share among the team.

Anyway, don't look so far ahead yet but concentrate on the CL match. I hope Koscielny and Song will be "back" to their usual self.
