This rangefinder-esque cam packs a 12.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, and it's obviously designed to go mano-a-mano with Micro Four Thirds and the slew of other mirrorless / interchangeable lens compacts that are hitting the market. Aside from supporting 720p movies, boasting an EXR processor and shipping with a 23mm F2 Fujinon lens, this new handheld includes a Hybrid Viewfinder that enables users to toggle between optical and electronic viewfinders and display intricate shooting information right into the OVF.

There's also a 2.8-inch rear LCD, a hot shoe on top and a magnesium alloy top / base plate that might be the sexiest we've ever seen on a camera in this sector. Low-light shooters will appreciate the ISO range of 200 to 6400, and there's also 5fps continuous shooting, a full-on manual mode, SD / SDHC / SDXC card support and dimensions of 127- x 75- x 54mm. Something tells us a lot of to-be DSLR buyers will be shifting to this far more portable alternative when it drops in early 2011... provided it doesn't cost a small fortune, of course.

Super nice cam. Looks so super sexy too. IQ should be damn good with Fuji's reputation for good sensor n glass. Sumore this is a nice 35mm f2 n APS-C sensor. Wouldn't mind having one in my old junk camera collection. Hehe.

No way it would be that cheap, Fujifilm KLASSE W 28mm F2.8's selling for RM2975, just for starter. 23mm on 35mm equv. would be 35mm.

Actually this camera's vintage look really caught many people's eyes.

But for the price, not too sure but according to this site (http://yutori2ch.blog67.fc2.com/blog-entry-1899.html), it stated:

2011年春に12万~15万円で製品化する。
Coming in 2011 Spring: 120k - 150k yen

if convert then is more than rm4k already. But note that this camera is "high class" camera.

oppss my bad.
no zoom lens aka prime lens gives better image quality. some can argue on this but well... lenses like this has lesser distortion too.

as for me, i prefer prime lens because of the lesser distortion. and i find that even if i would to use a zoom lens, i don't zoom it but rather i walk front / back so for me it's a waste of time and effort in using a zoom lens. 2nd reason is there is no zoom lenses for the type of camera that i am using (large format camera)

i do not like to waste time in zooming. i rather waste time in looking at the scene and composing a good image. i am used to this method of photographing things.

that's why i prefer a non zoom / prime lens

but don't you think that it's nicer to work with a prime lens?

fixed 35mm or 50mm on a camera... i don't have to worry about the camera and lens anymore, i spend more time looking at a scene and *snap*

It's not a system, and definitely not an "upgrade". From (for example) EPL1 to Oly E-5 then it's an upgrade. X100 is more of a sidekick, backup for Dslr.

The Photokina 2010 winner so far: Fujifilm Finepix-x100
By PR ADMIN | Published: SEPTEMBER 20, 2010
Fuji did surprise everyone with the new Finepix-x100 camera. Previous rumors indicated a new Fuji m4/3 camera, but nothing was even close to the real x100. The initial feedback from the online community is very positive. Was it so difficult to figure out what consumers really want? How comes that Fuji got it right from the first time? We still have to see some reviews, but I think this camera will be a winner. Some more details:

According to nikkei.com, the price is expected to be around 150,000 yen (around $1700) which is almost the price of a Leica X1. Availability: Spring 2011.

Yes. I think normally there are two windows and a mirror mechanism which makes two separate image coincident. I don't see two windows on this camera. Unless it uses an electronic ranging system, well I dunno. hmm.gif

The Leica Digilux 1 was released in 2002, roughly the same time as the Canon G2 and the Nikon 2000. It is the second of Leica's digital offerings. Where the original Digilux was developed in partnership with Fuji Camera, the Digilux 1 was developed in partnership with Panasonic ... (bla bla bla)

From Wiki.

p/s - I think this Fuji connection is coming from Erwin Puts' blog. biggrin.gif Also I think Leica is working with a whole slew of manufacturers (chips, sensor, shutter, memory etc etc). Don't think they divulge all info. shocking.gif

From Japan sources of 120,000 yen to 150,000 yen roughly will convert to USD1,400 to USD1,700.

Hmmm.. pricey.

Gosh... pants wet di.

But somehow I got this feeling that the price here in Taiwan is going to be awfully inflated due to not many shops carrying Fuji products.

i guess most ppl love digilux colour and the lens of this camera
the way the process the picture...
it's definitely good at day time picture.
good under sunlight...
bad at low light condition, it will become quite noisy.

let the early adopters have the justification of this premium price tag. it does come with fuji's own distinct technology mah.

leica x1 is more expensive. but will it beat x100? let's see. x100 has retro look, VF, video.
GXR is a good camera. good built quality but still can't match x1.
NEX? just shit.

Dilemma purchasing the X100

So these badboys have arrived in some camera shops around Auckland, New Zealand. Can get one for about NZD $1599 (=USD $1181)

This will be my first camera and I will be doing all round shots (street photography, portraits, macro and landscape shots). I was initially looking at a Canon 550D with a prime lens or canon 24-105 L lens. But now I'm leaning towards a smaller camera and easier to carry around but still able to take superb photos. Hence, now my choices are the Panasonic GF2, GF1 + 20mm f1.7 lens, Olympus PEN EPL-2 and Fujifilm Finepix X100.

I am able to get the GF1 + 20mm f1.7 lens kit for about NZD $900 (=USD 664) but thats without the viewfinder though.

I am interested in the X100 because it's newer, comes with large sensor, compact size, reasonable price since it's a competitor to the Leica X1 (or poor man's M9 rather). Given that the GF1 was released in 2009(?), should I be leaning towards newer tech? I am also looking to keep the camera for a long time and not replacing it every year.

Would you top up about USD $300-400 to get the X100 as the price not too significant compared to a GF1 + 20mm + viewfinder which should add up to about USD $800 in total.

GF1 + 20mm f1.7 lens without viewfinder addon = USD $652
GF2 14-45mm kit without viewfinder addon = USD $782
X100 = USD $1171

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are... frankly

Get yourself a DSLR or one of the micro four third cameras. They are more feature-rich and interchangeable lens means you can grow together with the system while you find your way and preference.

X100 is more of an enthusiast camera and its marketed as such. It's appeal lies in its "mojo"....operational similarities with a traditional film camera... things like its leaf shutter which newcomers to photography couldn't care less.

I second that.

My previous choice before X100 was Olympus PEN cam. Was going to buy the PEN-1 or EP1 or whatever its called, but they marked up the price here like crazy back then. Not to mention the scarce availability of the white version (and no white pancake lens to match, pretty dumb IMO) and the bundles that they have are not to my taste.

Then while waiting, EP2 came out. Don't quite like it though, even if it has more features that should've been in EP1 in the first place. Then X100 came out, and I'm ready to dump Olympus once and for all biggrin.gif (been with Olympus for a loooong time)

Electronic image overlay onto the optical viewfinder (piece of glass).

That's why the X100 lens is not interchangeable.

I have yet to give it a test drive I can tell you this thing rapes for night photography. It handles processing in the high ISO range EXTREMELY WELL compared to my friends Canon 5D Mark II, if not better.. Built in 3 stop ND filter for those long exposure nuts! Most importantly, its a compact with a freaking functioning viewfinder. Lens is razor sharp at F2 as well. I feel the manual focus is a bit slow because it's not a true rangefinder. Macro has to be used in EVF mode, not OVF, which forces you to switch modes.

I have included some test shots with no in-camera editing or post processing like lightroom

http://img35.imageshack.us/f/19450410150161929352603.jpg/

I'm sure you can find better photo samples on the net though. There's quite a number of user reviews floating around

Definitely buying one when it's available locally. Not as a replacement to my DSLR, but to complement it.

It has full auto, just doesn't have a one-all-button Auto like a standard digital camera. You have to just switch your aperture ring to (A) and shutter speed to (A).

The focus is very fast. You can see it here..

Buy Buy Buy!!!

Buy now and if don't like can goreng the price and sell since X100 production severely affected by the earthquake.

Taiwan's situation as I found out is that the first batch of 100pcs all pre-sold. No idea about availability.

ok i talked over the phone with the salesperson told me the price is 3888 comes with leather case (yes the original case). I asked about the hood. He went back and check and said yes includes the hood+adaptor ring as well. So I ma hurry down there lor.

Then found out the leather case and hood is not here yet but have to wait. Camera is here. Then ask for further discount. Salesman went ask the manager. Then found out that the hood is not included, just the adaptor ring. Then I said if you give me the adaptor ring, then next time I buy the hood, I will get another adaptor ring. The manager also not sure what comes with what now so went back in to check. When he came back out, now the 3888 package only comes with the leather case. No adaptor ring, no hood, no discount. cry.gif

Anyway I still bought tongue.gif
Case can only collect maybe early next month.

Actually not so cheap. Cheaper than Singapore but more expensive then Thailand. Retail price maybe can get some discount further but not sure. But they say leather case only first 50 sets.

While playing the camera at the shop, my initial fears is that the menu system is not so easy to use. Im coming from Panasonic menu system so Im using that as my yardstick. Some ppl says its too light weight but I find it just about right. I cant tell you more cause Ive got no idea how to "use" it yet.

go to Fujifilm at Menara Axis Ground floor.

btw he did have a sample hood and adaptor ring which I had to twist some arms to buy it from them

confirmed that the lens cap wont fit the hood but it seems to be able to fit the adaptor ring with filter.

hood+adaptor and leather case is supposed to be around RM200 each

so far the only item i feel its cheaply made are the two metal rings for the strap.

Don't bother going there, they're completely sold out.

I called them today, they said that there are no units left and that they'll have to order. But I went anyway to see for myself, and true enough, they're sold out. However...

I bought the display unit. biggrin.gif Not that I really mind anyway, it's basically brand new.

X100 if you don't want the bulkiness of a DSLR and don't mind a slight sluggishness in controls. A DSLR is much more responsive in controls - my opinion after handling the X100 myself.

People like me buy the X100 for times when I really don't want to lug a heavy DSLR around but don't want a compromise in image quality by using compact cameras either.

The noise performance alone is worth the extra priceover GF2, don't even get me started on the optical viewfinder ( a huge plus during outdoor )... seems to me like u dun know what advantages X100 has over other camera, stick with your GF2 and learn first

This Fujifilm Malaysia really dont know what they are doing or wants to do. I feel that they dont have a solid plan on pricing and marketing this X100. Their No.1 priority is short term profits

ShaShinKi: Hi, Fujifilm Malaysia said they do not have enough casing in the first batch, but they will give the casing in 2nd shipment. We will resend the casing to our customers separately when we received the casing.

Agreed. I don't know what they're up to, too. They told me they had no stock on the day I went so I had to get the demo unit, but the next day they suddenly have stock. Wonder if they're just hoarding units. Hmm.

So far not too bad. I'm more familiarized with the menu system now. The AF can be touchy. Not able to focus on less contrasty objects but ok not too bad. First time I'm using an APS-C sensor camera so the high ISO plus the f2.0 is a big jump in speed for me. I set it to speed priority for indoor candid shots and it came out not too bad. Something that my GF1 can't do without added noise or blur.

There is a Led indicator which I find my thumb hiding it all the time. Maybe I'm holding it the wrong way. The battery can take up to 200 mins to charge up which is very slow since it's a small battery. Now I'm trying to figure out if I can put on a filter and hood together. I hope so.

Not a review, but just thoughts:

I think it's a bit overhyped and I'm slightly disappointed with it. A few things here and there which I'm pretty sure they can fix with firmware updates, but I'm not sure if it's only me or if owners also feel this way about the camera. Fuji did it right in most aspects (form, ergonomics, features), but it can still be better. Seeing as how it's unique and one of a kind in the market, there's definitely plenty of room for improvement.

It's sluggish. It's not as nearly as responsive as a DSLR. I have a Fuji point and shoot which is pretty good, but I never liked its sluggish controls. Accessing the menus and navigating around is a bit of a drag. They can definitely make it smoother.

I don't know if it's just my memory card, but write speeds are excruciatingly slow. If I set review mode to continuous (or anything other than "off"), I can only take ONE frame, and have to wait for it to be written to the card before I can snap the next. If I set it to off I can take more frames, but the buffer is small and it is unable to display images quickly. JPEG only is fine, but with a CMOS sensor and image quality touted to rival DSLRs, I'd ideally want to shoot in RAW.

Manual focus is painful. This is one aspect they'll definitely have to improve if they want to market it well to rangefinder lovers. It's slow and sluggish. The focus by wire lags and it isn't as responsive as I'd like it to be. If the focus was anything like Canon's 85mm f/1.2 I'd be contented, but it's really slow. This is one thing they definitely have to improve on.

There are minor glitches I've experienced, which I should be able to reproduce if I try again. Things like the info display in the viewfinder suddenly disappearing if I access certain menus and do stuff - which prompts a restart of the camera to fix. Not a major problem, but a little annoying. Probably can be fixed with a firmware update.

The control wheel feels flimsy. I don't like it.

The RAW button should allow you to switch modes permanently, not just for one frame.

The electronic viewfinder is bad, I'm not sure of its specs but it's got a slow refresh time and looks pixelated. The back LCD is good, though. Pictures look accurate.

The continuous burst mode is disappointing. What it does is take the the frames in continuous succession (5fps if I remember correctly); yes, but you can't actually shoot it like you would with a DSLR. You have to shoot those 5 frames at once, not shoot one, recompose, shoot another. Once you release your finger off the shutter button it starts saving your pictures. Pretty bad.

I don't shoot video so I haven't bothered with the video mode, but I do know you can't manual focus while recording video.

And once again, the controls are sluggish. You can't change settings really quickly, because if you access a setting; for example ISO, the camera doesn't stay in ISO if you don't start selecting (unlike a DSLR). If you don't select anything it just exits the ISO setting in a few seconds automatically. Just another problem with Fuji's user interface.

I don't believe I have to list its merits here. Anyone who's interested in getting one for themselves would already know. Image quality is impressive, noise control is really good. That CMOS sensor and prime lens work well in tandem.
It's also very, very silent - quieter than a Leica M9. I would turn all sounds off, the clicks and fake shutter sounds are silly.

Overall, I may have been overly critical in my evaluation of the X100, but I still like it. If Fuji fixes most of the aforementioned issues in a firmware update, it'd be perfect. If you can get past the little quirks the X100 is a joy to own and use. Price is steep, but then again the marketing worked - Fuji definitely saw the room for a rangefinder-styled digital camera and thus can command such a price for one.

I read somewhere review said the writing speed is slow. So is not your memory card problem i think =)

You can google it.

i have to agree with xLegato

the GF1 is way faster that you can fire a shot and go for the next shot immediately. yes you even get to view the shot in no time. The x100 is faster than the Pen imho in this respect.

The manual focus takes too many turns to get where you want to go but try this - press the AEL/AFL and it will autofocus for you enough to be almost there.

yes the wheel feels too flimsy/ and the selected menu will switch off in mere seconds if you dont make a choice. there is no adjustment for this. the lumix GF1 can configure things way much better. it takes getting used to the wheel.

yes i think there is room for improvement but so far its still not too frustrating yet. I will give it a better test on my coming trip

Thanks. I wonder if I'll be the only one who thinks of that way about the X100 - we'll probably have to wait a while more before we start getting opinions from people around the world.

I intended that post to be for people to know what to expect if they were to buy the X100. By no means am I denigrating the camera - the picture quality is nothing short of impressive, and ISO control is excellent. But it's just not a perfect camera, at least not yet.

I can't really give a review yet as I haven't had time to use it extensively. What I've noticed is that when shooting high ISOs in JPEGs, Fuji's engine applies somewhat strong noise reduction. I believe this was with the "Mid" setting. I didn't bother to process any RAW files yet as I don't have Photoshop right now (hard drive with Photoshop in it crashed), but you will probably have better photos doing the noise reduction and post processing yourself. JPEGs out of camera are enough for Facebook albums or 4R prints, but otherwise you're going to want to play with the RAW files.

I hope my post helped, in one way or another!

Oh - if anyone wants to buy one, I have one for sale. Brand new, never powered up, never shot. All intact, unfilled warranty card. Will include receipt. Got lucky and managed to grab another unit, but I need money to buy a 1D4.

I got it from Fujifilm Malaysia on Friday.

PM me. I'll also give you the leather case when I get it.

I may sound like a fanboy, but uh, what the hell...
It's not "fake Leica" look, it's the standard rangefinder design.

Not sure about the write time, but start up time is said to be improved with faster cards. Not by very much, though.

Xlegato~ Thanks for the feedback..
for the review out there it seems a little bit bias that they only address all the plus without the minus, it's good for consumer to know what they shall be expecting.

I think this is a camera done right with tweaking required, in no time it would be another benchmarking model for other models to immitate=)

Heard the stock is pretty hard to get.
Local shop got to take 2 units of other fujifilm products before they can get 1 unit of X100.
Bad marketing I must say.

Actually it's a conspiracy by Leica n Fuji. They did the R&D together as it will benefit both parties. Fuji get's to profit 1st by selling loads of these cheap X100s to Leica wannabes who dont have enough money yet. BUT it feeds the lust for now. Sooner or later these same ppl will move on to the real M rangefinder when money is in the pocket. Then Leica gets the 2nd round of profits.

It's a conspiracy I tell you!

That bunch of LIARS at Fujifilm Malaysia is not to be trusted.

When I first bought my x100, I told them I wanted to buy two and will come back from my trip then only pickup my other set or when I collect the leather case - which ever comes first.

I even called Robin (sales supervisor) after I reached home to remind him cause I know this will be a hard to get item. He promised me will keep one aside and put my name on it.

Ok so I got back from my vacation a week later, called him up and he tells me to wait for next shipment cause no stock. WTF??? Ok nevermind tahan sikit.

So today I went collect my leather case, I asked about buying my second x100 and he told me still no stock. Asked to speak with his boss - Kevin and this Robin says he is not back yet. No more than 1 minute later, out walks Kevin from his office. What a farking liar! So I gave both a piece of my mind.

Seriously the way they do business - not trust worthy at all. Even when buying the first x100 that time, they tell me includes hood and filter adaptor, go until there none. Then say only filter adaptor then can talk until becomes none also when my wife and even Robin heard that it includes the adaptor.

I like the camera but dealing with Fujifilm Malaysia leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Went Axis there today. Took me around 30 mins to arrive after one "Danny" called me to inform that my camera has arrived.

When I arrived, all gone. like WTF man! He just gave it all away on a first come first serve basis even if we booked it beforehand. And he has balls to claim they get only 4 units when I know from someone close to the source that they have 100 units. When I hentam him back telling him about their practice to ask retailers to have to buy other Fuji cams then can buy X100, he diam and pusing2 story. MCB betul!!! mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

anybody wanna sell theirs?

They're definitely hoarding units. I went to pick up my leather case and I asked about stock and they said they don't have any, but days later I hear of people buying them.

Retail price is RM3888.

I just checked with a Bangkok-based retailer, and the owner is selling X100 for around RM3200 WITH Fuji International Warranty. Stock is aplenty. doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif

I am definitely furious right now with the ***holes at Fujifilm Axis!

Yesterday just to test out my "luck", I asked a friend to call them up and book (yes, BOOK) one. Bear in mind that I've called and "registered" (not book, that's what they said) my contact with them loooong time ago.

And today apparently my friend got a call that the item is in stock, and currently RESERVED for him. Great huh?

Does your friend actually want that camera? If you were just trying your luck and got him to book it for you, then get the camera and be done with those unscrupulous people.

heck no! i wanted a first-hand proof on how retarded those guys at Fujifilm Axis are at dealing with their customers and future customers. I've read so many bad shits of Fujifilm Axis across the internet, and not just in lowyat.net. And believe me, I've had my fair share of messages and private emails of people not aware of getting the case, and even things like "Fujifilm Axis said no such thing as getting the case later."

5 mins ago (7:15) I (FINALLY) received a call from them, asking me to pick the camera up. and they're closing at 7:30. I was like doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif And the person was just a step below begging me to come! I said no I can't go, I live on the other side of kl, how to reach there on time. Then she's like 7:45? 8:00? "Aiyoh susah lah macam ni" LIKE DUH HELLO! You called a person who booked yesterday first masa petang, and took you almost closing time to call someone who took the trouble to "RESERVE" way earlier?! And they think I would spend an hour plus in the jam just to go there and and possibly get a "sorry someone else came faster" excuse from them.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I might just report their behaviour to Fujifilm Holdings and Fujifilm Corp in Japan and probably won't buy any of their microscopic and broadcast lenses anymore. I'll prolly exert my insignificant hmm.gif influence on what some of our tv stations and other tv & film production companies buy/use.

Or I'll just get one from Bangkok with the international warranty. 3100 for the camera + 700 for flight and hotel is quite a good deal, no? biggrin.gif

Oh, so you turned them down now? What you could have done is just make sure that the one set was definitely reserved for you before heading there.

Good to see that the transfer speed is bottlenecked only by the card, not the processor. That thoroughly explains why I was getting such sluggish performance (in terms of file transfer) when I had a X100.

I wonder if the same can be said for the M9...

Cannot sorry tongue.gif but if I remember correctly the hood + adapter. Pack is 200 bucks.

Just went to the jungle in Kelantan to try it out, seems to be quite a heavy duty cam. Versatile too due to the size, especiallly during climbing. As for the handling, the size and positioning of buttons need some time to get used to. Not exactly a problem since its such a joy to try to take pictures biggrin.gif took some surprisingly good shots while 4-wheeling in the jungle...shows how good this cam really is if you know how to work around it. The ISO/AE/Filmsim/dynamicRange bracket shots feature are awesome for street/candid. Say subject is moving, and you don't know wether iso400 is perfect. Select the bracket shot mode and it'll take iso 200+400+800 at the same time. Not sure if those nikon/canon slrs got this feature. La.. So I might sound a bit jakun tongue.gif

I do remember btw that there is this online shop based in penang I think that's selling the cam for 3699. Tak ingat where tongue.gif

Ill upload some pics once I get back home, but in my case, I hardly call it slow. Its actually the opposite.Faster than X1 by a little bit I can say. Many many times I managed to get surprisingly sharp focused shots of a moving subject in a moving vehicle in the jungle. Some even right after I change the shutterspeed and take a snap. Although, I do find that occasionally it lags if I do that using EVF. The OVF/HVF tarak issue.

I gotta say though, that the HVF isn't really that special to me. It looks almost like the EVF/OVF in my HD camcorder. Then again, I don't use those traditional canon/nikon SLRs so I don't really know the difference.

The standard price is 3888. the adapter and lens hood is 200.

Just now I had a mother's day dinner with the whole family, and gave the camera for everybody to try out. Set the appropriate exposure, iso, etc and gave the cam away. They were quite shocked when I said it's almost 4k but no zoom, but once I showed them how to make "gambar edit" (shallow DOF, F2.0), adjust the "brightness" (set the shutter speed) they were mesmerised by the bokeh and in no time almost EVERYBODY start taking pictures using it! I have not seen that one before, even when I took out the Olympus superzoom or Olympus E or Leica. With those cams, I suppose they felt intimidated by the size and the handling of it.

anyways i went to see a leather artist who make leather goods for virtually every malaysian rockstar yesterday. i showed him the artisan artist strap, and he got angry at me for buying sh*tty leather laugh.gif i instantly said it's just RM100 haha. He showed me what he meant - the cut, stitch, padidng, and i tend to agree after his description @_@ so i asked him to make a good one. it's gonna be ready in a few day's time. I'll show it to you guys, if you like it i might even make a few more if you guys wanna get it. trust me, it'll be nothing like you've seen before tongue.gif

where can i find billingham bags btw?

well if the MSRP is 3888 anything below is cheapER, no?

although, you might wanna check with the warranty, cause there is a very rare chance that you might end up with a beta unit biggrin.gif

*
which artisan strap did you buy for RM100? Cannot be fully leather right for this low amount? I see their cotton strap lowest price pun RM150 already. Thanks

it doesn't quite fit your traditional rf terminology, but i'll be damned if it didn't have the rf soul/ethos built in it! tongue.gif The HVF and in-camera in-depth raw processing is awesome! the JPEG is seriously very, very good as well. Don't know how'd they cram it, but if you can appreciate technology, you'll definitely appreciate this like how you appreciate a noc thumbup.gif

I've been handling video cameras of five and six-figure RM and whenever I have to... "wind down" (for a lack of a better phrase) and use cameras, I always loathe dslrs for their shoddy and less-complementary viewfinders. I can never get something relatively as good and informative as the one in the high-end videocams' viewfinders and controls. Although it might sound like I'm asking a lot, it's not. No-nonsense running-man/mountain/sun dials, informative viewfinders, etc. Give me what I need, and that's all.

Having said that, after using the camera for a bit now, one thing that I'd wish for is a dedicated button for ND. Oh, and an ISO dial would be nice too.

The AF seems to be contrast-based, although in my usage, as long as you can understand it's quirks, the AF is definitely in the "fast" category. The noise is very very low, and the "film" grain (it's not noise when it's pretty tongue.gif) when shooting in B&W is almost like what you can get in a pentax k.

Oh and I'll definitely call this a rangefinder, no matter what "professionals" say about its pretentious RF design and capability. I'm a pro too, and I can afford a flashy car compared to most, so my opinion should carry some weight, no? whistling.gif

Aiyooooo dude, yes it's a nice camera n all but comparing it to a Noctilux is insane. The Noctilux alone can buy most ppl's car oredi. N it most definitely isn't a rangefinder. tongue.gif

nowhere, and i've looked at almost every single shop around kl, melaka, kelantan, etc.

and you know what I've found out after getting this x100?

most camera shops in malaysia are crap! have absolutely no idea what they're selling. and even if they do, like if they sell filters, their knowledge is up to what they sell, and that's it.

try asking around for a "female to female" adapter or a 49-49mm adapter. all blank face! somemore in my experience in shit shops like camworld etc they like dowanna layan you because you're carrying an old (by design only la mcb) camera!

i haven't gone to eng tong ss2 yet though. heard they sell and distribute lots of filters and alike.

Just bought my X100 a couple days ago after poison by stevehuff.
I has been juggling between Panasonic G3 & X100, finally i made the kill on X100 as i want something slim/small/with extremely good pic quality, & most important i will stay away from the multiple lens poison tongue.gif

My impression on X100,
- box packaging is nothing to shout about, just decent, original strap is just normal PU stuff (if it is genuine leather it will be awesome)
- Camera is damn solid built, it surprisingly quite large size though & slight weight more than i expected
- All buttons/dials feels nice (just like other i think the MENU/OK is slight small, someone didn't paste another button on top of it so it is easier to access), i wish it has 1 more addition Fn (customize button) & ISO independent dial too.
- Hybrid viewfinder is awesome, OVF is super clear & nice but has some parallax error, so most the time i am using EVF instead
- F2 aperture bokeh effect is pretty nice
- F4 aperture is razor sharp
- FujiChinon lens is sharp & have good clarity

For those who has doubts about this camera u can check out below site for tips
http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2011/05/11/t...-by-steve-huff/
No camera is perfect, read more details review as following
http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2011/05/03/t...-by-steve-huff/

Here are my findings on X100
- It doesn't have Face detection, so u have to train yourself to focus & more aware where to focus, when using DSLR, we take things for granted, just press zoom button, the rest is happen so fast & history.
- Its AF is slow compare to DSLR or M4/3 (GF2), especially on macro shot, but compare to other Rangefinder camera which don;t even have AF. So i think i can live with it. But normal landscape focus is pretty fast.
- Many did complain as it can't AF in the dark situation, but after reading Stevehuff tips, i switch on AF assist light (i off all the sound & silent mode), darn it really can capture very dark situation (even my dark fur chinchilla is able to capture), the picture clarity is so nice IMO & i didn't use any flash
- I did use the Sandisk 16GB 50mb/s, startup is just like instantly (no issue for me)
- If u want to something really more macro short, i found out u can use AEL/AFL button to zoom in further on MF mode
- EV dial is really useful, whenever u are shooting at nite or bright situation
- ND filter is really useful, so i set my FN button to ND filter quick access
- many bracketing option can be used (ISO, EV, film mode & etc)

I wish X100 will be better if
- battery life is longer like 550D can handle up to 500+ pix, while X100 can handle around 260-300 pix (need to off LCD, i did activate fast start mode)
- fast AF (closes to GF2), it will be perfect

*i am still waiting for the my Hood & adapter ring coming this week
*i pimp it with red soft release button & red strap.
*after 2-3days messing around with X100, i am able to gain more knowledge on camera parameter control & its effect ( i am consider newbies)
*I did bought another original spare battery

Just sharing my thoughts, don't flame me if i mentioned anything wrong above as i am newbies in photographing

Really eff-up my budget for the next coming months... Shouldn't have visited the Fotokem booth last weekend, they have a X100 unit there, and lucky(or unlucky) me everyone else went for Nikon/Canon dSLR products while the X100 is empty, they don't know what they are missing!

Anyway, Fotokem has stocks now, RM3880 you will get one leather pouch with your X100 too!

Check this video.
basically u can used pentax 28mm F3.5 Square Hood, with Thick filter (remove the glass). U can add on some thin film tape onto the inner diameter hood to make it more tight fit.
BTW u can used Sony NEX-3 cap to cover ur x100 lens.

you got to check what type of lenses use 49mm hood. not the usual lenses i assume. i didn't say it's professional.
YL and keat still caters to the mass. they cant afford to carry accessories that only cater to the few photographers.
that explains why they do not have a lot of other stuffs.

I found 49mm stuff in YL and some shops in Pudu. Viewfinders also can find in Keat (and YL).

Some pics, mostly unedited. wanted to edit, but the JPEG is already so sharp and so detailed, sharpening a bit also like destroying the pic pulak yawn.gif

I'm not sure about the video part, haven't actually used it more than once, and even that time it was just testing around.

I've got the black voigtlander viewfinder from YL. It's mostly for street photography, and pimping it a bit biggrin.gif But whenever I venture into the jungle for a mineral photography shoot I take it off. Easier to traverse around Malaysian jungle with it's thick undergrowth with a smaller and solid camera than worrying about wether the viewfinder will jatuh after langgar a branch biggrin.gif

What does mineral photography means? Your job must be related to jungle thingy hmm.gif ...
After reading X100 manual, in Video mode, need to put AF-S mode, then video will be AF but need some times to AF. Depends how sudden & far away from your previous focus point defer.

yup!

but one thing though, is the position of the flash. they sell the lens hood n adapter for quite a huge sum of money, but it blocks the flash! luckily i don't really have the need for flash photography, but it kinda sucks that if you want flash, no hood. and i use hood all the time :/

like this pic for instance

can see the bottom part of the image is darker, even after i had to adjust the image a bit to hide the blocked flash part. but if i didn't tell you, you wouldn't know so it's all good biggrin.gif

fixed lens by virtue of it being fixed almost always means that the quality can be higher or equal to a much more expensive mounted lens

someone mention it is doesn't make sense to put a cheap UV filter in front of expensive lens.
I think about it, it is true. So just the hood & lens caps will do the job.

Well since that someone doesn't potentially scratch his camera few times a week, I'd rather it scratches the cheap filter IMO.

it looks huge, but it's not actually. quite a nice size, although i know there is a smaller (standard) size for soft shutters.

Oh yeah, for the hood or any 49mm hood like the X100 ones, the correct snap lens cap size is 58mm.

Just bought my X100 a couple days ago after poison by stevehuff.
IMO Steve Huff's reviews are garbage, but I digress.

I brought the X100 and a 5D2 + 50 1.2 with me to Brisbane, and I've been here for more than 3 weeks. I've taken 95% of my photos so far with the X100 - and the reason for this is because it's so much lighter compared to the DSLR combination. It produces good enough output for my uses, so I don't feel like it's much of a compromise. On many ocassions I simply can't be bothered carrying such a heavy load, and that's where the X100 is perfect.

Though I still have my qualms with its user interface, I'm for the most part happy with whatever the X100 has been able to deliver so far.

Actually i do well aware all those quirks before i decide to get X100. Nothing is perfect, it is depend on your needs. Size really matter here. that is y GF3 right now is freaking small, looks like a soap brick laugh.gif
It is good news right now u are "most happy" of its performance. Me too. It is such phenomenal camera & realize there are many new forums dedicated for X100 & many X100 specific topics discussion thread appeared in many famous forum, it is just amazing.

if they can fix only one thing about the camera in the upcoming firmware, i want it to be the manual focusing system. if they can fix that, i'm gonna be soooo happy biggrin.gif that, to me, is the only one "feature" that is useless, so make it useful fuji!

if they wanna add one feature, that would be peaking/zebra meter! adding this alone would change this prosumer cam into a pro cam, IMO

i read in an x100 forum that one of the things that fuji is looking at in the new firmware is the peaking function. might be just rumours though, but would be awesome if fuji actually responds to their hardcore/niche/cult base if they did, much like ricoh and the hardcore GR userbase.

the peaking function shows the focused area. something like in the new NEX-C3 (and possibly in my NEX-3 in the upcoming firmware). See video, around the 2:20 mark

user posted image

user posted image

better manual control + peaking = rangerfinder meter = x100 as a modern rangefinder biggrin.gif

zebra however i believe is in all pro camcorders (and now in prosumer camcorders as well) that shows overexposed area by showing you a black-white stripe pattern. don't think this feature is common/available in digital cameras though, but it'll be good if they have it. broadcast tv's absolutely hate overexposed/pure white areas in your vids, and can reject your tape/video if you put one (it messes up the broadcast signals basically).

again, i don't know if any dslrs have this feature, as it's a common thing in videoland. but would be nice smile.gif

there is 1 type of soft button (mostly for aesthetic purposes), which is adhere on top of your camera button via double side tape.
this wont able to get the actual soft button feels.

Fortitude Valley during Sunday morning would be a really nice place to shoot, during the tai-chi apeks punya training.

Or listening to the musics on Sunday mornings while eating the fresh Hungarian bread Langosh (if the big guy's still there, tell him that his regular Malaysian customer sends his regards tongue.gif).

Southbank market is good as well. These are perfect locations for street photography IMO. Share some pics if you can, damn I miss Brissy mate! Best times of my life wub.gif

received on my desk this morning. A 52mm-49mm step down ring. the 52-49 has grooves all the way at the inside, so it fits the 49mm groove of the X100 perfectly (but terbalik la, since the X100 has a reversed groove). with this setup, you can create a makeshift hood for the X100, similar to the original one but a lot cheaper. X100>52-49mm (reverse) > square hood > filter inside hood.

stepdown ring = US$2.50
hood = US$1 (similar to X100's round hood, but black. local brand is octopus)
total = US$3.50 (shipping is free) / RM11
X100 hood+ adapter = RM200

(unfortunately I don't have the black hood with me, my bini took it together with the NEX tongue.gif)

picture is X100>52-49mm>49-52mm> 49mm filter>hood adapter>hood. just for fun tongue.gif

and apparently the 52-49mm stepdown ring accepts 52mm filters and 49mm filters as well (at the 49mm thread side).

I'm gonna compile every kind of customisation that is possible later, but since you asked..... tongue.gif

X100> X100 ring adapter > Voigtlander hood

user posted image

X100 > Vivitar vintage rubber hood 49mm, reverse > filter

as you can see, the hood can only be mounted if terbalik. So you take out the rubber from the metal ring (there's a slight gum that attaches the hood to the metal ring) and put the rubber the other way.

With all the customisation that you can do with the X100 with aftermarket parts that I have tried, I can safely say that while there are tons of options available, and a lot cheaper too, the official X100 adapter (and hood) is by far the best looking one, and worth the premium price. the real (not realistic, different!) magnesium finishing, quality, build... I can safely say that no aftermarket parts are of the same quality as the fuji one.

new firmware is up v1.10

http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_ca..._x100/fupd.html

Detail of the update
The firmware update Ver.1.10 incorporates the following issues.
The contents of the owner's manual will be partly changed along with this update.

Please check them in detail.

1. The following functions can be rocked during shooting by holding down [MENU / OK] button over 3 sec.
DRIVE / Flash / White balance / Macro (set on the Command Dial - 4 direction key)

2. "CORRECTED AF FRAME" menu is added in "SET-UP" menu (the last line on menu page 6) to display additional AF frame (corrected AF frame for reducing parallax) which can be effectively used for macro shots. (Factory default value is set to "OFF")

3. Adjustment in1/3 step increment for shutter speed or aperture setting is enabled in Shutter-Priority AE and Aperture-Priority AE mode, on top of those in Manual Exposure mode.
Shutter-Priority AE : Adjustment is controlled by rotating the command dial
Aperture-Priority AE : Adjustment is controlled by moving left / right on the command control lever

4. In the post-view mode (display after shooting), focused area is magnified in the LCD (EVF) display when the command control lever is pressed.
Cf. "IMAGE DISP." Setting must be set to "CONTINUOUS",

5. Setting of the role for "Fn" button is enabled by holding down "Fn" button over 3 sec.

6. Actual ISO sensitivity for shooting is displayed just after pressing shutter button halfway, when "ISO AUTO CONTROLL" is set to ON.

7. When "eye sensor" is activated by pressing "VIEW MODE" button, "EYE SENSOR" is displayed on EVF / OVF or LCD just a while to notice the status.

8. Macro mode ISO sensitivity, Drive mode, Dynamic range, Self-timer mode, flash mode is maintained even if shutter speed setting or aperture setting is changed. Also, even after changing viewing mode into shooting mode or turning of the camera, these values are maintained.

9. The size of focus frame set through viewing EVF / LCD is maintained even after changing display mode between OVF and EVF (LCD).

10. When "SHUTTER SOUND" is chosen, each shutter sound is performed in each menu setting.

11. In viewing mode, the last viewed shot is maintained as even after changing into shooting mode.
Cf. After another image is shot after viewing former image, memory of viewing the image is cancelled and the last shot is displayed as the latest image.

12. When the aspect ration of the image size is set to 16:9, the line of bright frame line on OVF is displayed with aspect ratio 16:9.

13. Viewing mode with Photo Information on EVF / LCD is maintained even if another image is shot. On top of this issue, deleting picture directly is enabled even in viewing with Photo information by pressing the command dial up, or MENU operation is also enabled.

14. Occasionally, preview image on EVF / LCD after pressing the shutter halfway might be darker than live view, according to aperture setting or brightness of shooting target. This phenomenon is improved.

15. When "DISP. CUSTOM SETTING" is set to OVF or EVF / LCD, the setting value is maintained even after customizing the menu.

16. Even for only RAW data recording mode, "RED EYE REMOVAL" setting is selectable among ON or OFF.

17. In MF (manual focus) setting with OVF mode, OVF viewing is activated after pressing shutter half way, even if "FOCUS CHECK" (magnifying center of the image) is displayed in EVF by pressing the center of the command control lever.

18. Displaying period after pressing each command dial (Macro / Flash) is prolonged from 1.5 sec into 2.0 sec for confirming correctly.

20. For resuming from AUTO POWER OFF setting, the shutter release button was required to hold down halfway for a few second. For quicker operation, resuming is activated by just pressing the button.

21. Image quality captured by Velvia / ASTIA mode is improved on mainly shadow tone (dark area), when dynamic range is set to 200% or 400%.

22. When "OVF POWER SAVE MODE" is set to ON and "Fn" button is set to "MOVIE RECORDING", the camera may be unstable occasionally. This phenomenon is improved.

23. Histogram display on OVF during exposure compensation is improved.

yeah. Overall a very nice bugfix update. a few things are faster as well, like AF, starting up, etc.

but to me, those are negligible, since those "issues" are nonsense for me to begin with.

i believe that after a few more bugfixes, then we're gonna start seeing Fuji addressing the usability issues. like the macro button, for instance. no need menu ler doh.gif it's only for Macro On or Off what.

only then will they start adding pro/high-end features, like peaking, zebra, etc. by that time prolly we can start seeing X200 edi laugh.gif

but overall i'm quite happy with the fact that fuji is listening to users. although to my knowledge, they are only addressing dpreview's concerns, not users... since dpreview's bug list are the most comprehensive that's available anywhere. still good, but listening to normal users, not objective, quantitative review sites would be better, IMO. still, i'm not complaining smile.gif

i am also kind agree & happy with the fixed. Some i don't even aware of sweat.gif
I like the best, in MF mode AF speed has been increase, even the SD card writing speed is faster thumbup.gif
I like best is the parallax error compensation, now X100 will have 2 Square Box when focusing.
Biggest complain to me still the Video mode, not yet fixed. It is difficult to use X100 when u try to move around on object & hope it will focus the object fast enough. My Iphone4 does this much better than X100.
I wish X100 will includes HDR features...
Lately i got another 2 spare batteries. Ciplak punya, said it is from the OEM factory too. So far it is doing well. Now I hv total 4 batteries. 2 ori, 2 ciplak.

i'm looking for any ideas on the parts to make the soft shutter button.

specifically, the screw part. i keep trying to find small screws that are suitable and compatible, but so susah lah since soft button screws punya groove is so so small!

the screw is special type, taper type not easy to do.
painting is a bit tricky, u cant spray too thick layer on the screw thread area, later u will have issue fitting into the camera. aiya just buy only.
i have smaller button, but i dont like it. i prefer big 1. so i buy another 2 big button.

u set as multi-af spot la, should be ok if like that. don't ask me how, but i know it's possible. i think. i only shoot rocks, no need multi-af haha!

most of the time i shoot with F2. During Bersih, I ikut my photographer friend's advice and set shutter speed to auto, and F5.6 and above. but dammit the pics all jadi so blur @_@

bro thanks for the tips.
u should set for af-c, it is quite fast AF 1 shot after another. quite useful for your Bersih campaign photo shooting.
I think for generally landscape & need fast action, just set the aperture size to AUTO & AF-C, so u won't miss it. but generally F5.6-8.0 is good for that.
putting the caps outside the hood is quite ugly, anyway i may buy & try.
i just buy half leather case with strap today, will be getting in a week time. It is Crocodile leather! thumbup.gif will post it later once i get it.

2 days ago, i try out the Aperture speed B mode, it is really amazing for landscape for nite time. the quality turns out so good.

Your shutter speed is too low. You should try auto-ISO (set it to 3200 since this camera rocks even at high ISO), then set it to shutter speed to 1/250 or 1/500, set the f-stop to f5.6.

Your shutter speed is too low. You should try auto-ISO (set it to 3200 since this camera rocks even at high ISO), then set it to shutter speed to 1/250 or 1/500, set the f-stop to f5.6.

oh yeah i knew about them, but the fitting won't be perfect and won't last long unless you take out the current black morrocan pebble leatherette cover around the x100.

luigi wannabe with much better pricing.
Workmanship is very good too. It fit like a glove.
Just the strap a bit too long now like Gariz strap but it is adjustable using scewdriver...

I check the asahi price...it is just myr$80? pretty good price too ..just worry it won't last long, peel off after some times using or worse this bubble up...

they should make it from aluminum die casting to reduce the cost, not to machine from the raw billet material.
if the price is myr$100 region. i consider to get it. if it is like rm300-400 for this metal piece. big NO.
In fact, i rather get nice half case with some from enhance gripper...much more worth it. just my 2cents

i still feel custom half case is nicer.
only nice about gariz, its base plate enable to open the battery cover w/out remove the case. But u have to add on the overall height of the camera. Anyway it is one of the innovative design i come across. Actually i almost bought it....but i still like my crocs half case.

I'm thinking of getting one of those actually, but preferably without the 'Leica' wording on it.
I think a Thumb grip will be great for me holding the camera steadier, but RM 600 for it is just nuts.

Haha thanks C-Fu. Looks great on your x100, and now smells great too. Did you notice the heavy leather smell?

Btw I noticed your tail end a bit short. You should bring it out longer and loop it back into the ring thingy. This is so that it wont be that easy to come off on its own

Take a look here to see how its done

Btw, the Zeiss hood you see here is quite a difference from the X100 hood. With the x100, you just slot it in and turn. It doesnt lock into place. The Zeiss hood when you turn (and mind you its really smooth), and once it reaches where its suppose to go, it locks into place by some kind of a spring thingy, the hood will pop out like 1 mm and lock with a reassuring click. When you want to take it off, you have to push the hood back in, just slightly, and then you turn the other way. One more nice thing is that when its locked, the Carl Zeiss logo is at the top. Now compare that with the X100..... shakehead.gif

sorry show off sikit..... tongue.gif

ah i see. thanks for that..... never actually bothered to find out the proper/better way to put the strap.... sometimes when i'm lazy i just do a knot and be done with it! whistling.gif

anyway, i've never find the need to use more than 1 (the center) AF point in a camera. why'd you need 100 points is totally beyond me sweat.gif
