Sir Alex Ferguson was set to coach Arsenal after the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, if former Scotland, Aberdeen and Manchester United goalkeeper Jim Leighton is to be believed.

Leighton, who was part of the Scotland squad coached by Ferguson during the ‘86 World Cup, told BBC Radio Five Live Ferguson was offered the Arsenal manager’s position just prior to the start of the tournament, following the resignation of Don Howe.

According to Leighton, Ferguson had been prepared to take the job – with fellow Scot George Graham as his assistant – but failed to reach an agreement with the north London club as he had wanted to wait until after the World Cup finished before an announcement was made.

if these media reports are true then Rooney is being an ass.

For all the nurturing, support and protection fergie has provided him, to think he knows better than the manager all of a sudden is...

Like I said, rooney has always been about "future potential" rather than his actual performances. Only last season did he finally showed clear signs of how good he can be (on a consistent enough basis), and then now with his dip of form comes all this hooha.

Man utd will miss him, no doubt. But he's not irreplacable either.

well he does have a record of being unfaithful.. he was at everton and said he's blue 4eva but suddenly switch to Man Utd

i have never had a personal attach towards player ever since King Ruud left
(when he left to that filthy club in spain i didn't watch Manchester United playing for almost half a season)

no man is bigger than the club.Beck knows it,Keane knows it,King Ruud knows it as well, and i'm sure Rooney knows it too

Hmm... since when did King Eric pass on his title to RVN? tongue.gif

Rooney's a striker. And what do strikers need? Passes from midfields, in which usually, the midfields dictate the game.

What can we learn from other teams? They have strong midfielders. Or even the latest merseyside derby, of which the blue side had a strong midfield , which glued together and played well.

Our midfield, in particular, the centre, as I have always said, isn't all that strong as of late.

We need a great central midfielder who can boss the game, and and an attacking midfielder who can give passes which breaks the toughest of defences.

Nani is a good midfielder, but he plays off the right striker, and would be considered as a right winger, who plays like,a striker.

Consider the 98/99 team, we had at least 3 central midfielders who can play the game whatever they wanted to. And to look into this current side, we're jam packed with strikers.

Rooney, Chicarito, Berbatov , Owen,Macheda , Nani.

All of which, do not have a source of passes of which they can run into.

Another thing would be aggression, I don't think the other teams come to old trafford, or play against us, knowingly that we have a fierce squad. (Cantona, Keane ). The Premiership tremble having both of them lifting it's trophy, what else the teams in them.

If you can see, Rooney + Berba always have to come deep into the field, needing the ball, which they should have been making great runs into the defense. And why is that? Because of the lack of midfielders.

Scholesy is coming of age, and please, I do not rate Fletcher any higher than Macheda is. Carrick needs to find his old boots, and Hargo needs to stop dating the nurse.

you mean we should whine and cry that rooney is leaving? or beg him not to leave?
all those actions would actually change anything that is about to happen?

Yeah typical of us.

We have great players who win lots of trophy's for us. Irreplaceable at that moment. Then his play drops, we just say oh well, good bye. Club > players.

But hey, we still win more trophys with whoever that comes in next (Beckham, van Nistelrooy and Keane are prime examples. unlike others whistling.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif

Yes, very typical of us. Winning things are so typical of us biggrin.gif

lol.

In any case, the media is one thing but I will just wait for official announcement, at this moment nothing is sure yet. I for one hope he doesn't leave though but if he insist then, I will respect his decision, just like Ronaldo.

Yeah I think for one our midfield is lacking as of late. Scholes can't handle playing every week. Giggs too, and he's injured now sad.gif

We should really think of strengthening the midfield rather than the strikers.

Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez said he wanted to play in England with Manchester United.

The Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been interested in Sanchez for long time ago. Reportedly, players from Chile was a major target in the January transfer window.

Sanchez contract will ended in 2014. However, Ferguson insists he wanted to bring the star to Old Trafford.

Sanchez has admitted he wants to play for United. His remarks came in an interview with Spanish newspaper.

“United? Sure, I want to play at a club like that,” he told to AS.

Not gonna lie, will definitely feel somewhat sad if Rooney were to go. But players come and go. To be honest, I wanted Ronaldo to stay more than Rooney. lol.
