hope ferguson will bring in more top notch midfielders in jan transfer window.. scholes has been superb since start of season, but don think his body could keep up with barclay's hectic schedule. Its good for ferguson policy to always nurture young talents.. but this season we need some real dominance force in midfield. we have been drawing all the games away from home with mid ranking teams.

We rarely sign player in January. let alone top notch midfielder. What we do really need are some bloody rich Pak Arab to buy us

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has told unsettled striker Wayne Rooney to look after 'number one' after he reportedly decided not to renew his contract.

The 39-year-old Ipswich Town manager helped the Red Devils win seven Premier League titles before he left in 2005 after falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

It now seems Rooney is following a similar trail and leaving before his time after publically contradicting Ferguson by stating he has not been suffering from an ankle injury as previously claimed.

It is now understood that Rooney is against signing a new contract at Old Trafford meaning the club's hierarchy could decide to cash in on his services sooner rather than later.

"Players and managers fall out all the time," said Keane. "It's part of life.

"If I was to offer advice to Wayne, who is a good lad, I would tell him to make sure he looks after number one.

"Players are pieces of meat - that's how I look at it. When your time's up, your time's up.

"Luckily for Wayne he's at a good age and he's fit."

Along with Keane, David Beckham and Jaap Stam are other players who have left Old Trafford after falling foul of Ferguson, although he does not believe Rooney's exit is inevitable.

"It depends on the situation and whether you have been lied to or not," he said. "But, as usual, we are second guessing what has gone on at the club, which is dangerous."

Jose Mourinho expects Sir Alex Ferguson to persuade Wayne Rooney to stay at Manchester United as chief executive David Gill confirms the club will comment on the situation at the 'appropriate time'.

Rooney's future at Old Trafford has been plunged into doubt amid reports that talks regarding a contract extension have broken down.

The England striker's current deal expires in 2012 and there is speculation that Rooney does not currently want to sign a new contract.

Rumours of a rift with United boss Ferguson have surfaced following Rooney's omission from the team in recent weeks on the back of allegations regarding the 24-year-old's private life.

The situation has led to suggestions that United will either sell Rooney in January or at the end of the season to avoid the risk of losing the former Everton starlet for nothing.

Real Madrid are among the clubs to have been linked with a bid for Rooney, but the Spanish giants have been quick to rule out a winter swoop for the forward.

And Real coach Mourinho does not expect Rooney to leave the Red Devils, believing Ferguson will talk his star man into signing an extension.

"I don't think he will (become available)," said Mourinho. "I think the big man will persuade him to stay."

Meanwhile, Ferguson has kept his own counsel, although he looked relaxed as he attended a £1million extension of United's charitable work for UNICEF at Old Trafford on Monday afternoon.

Ferguson will doubtless be questioned on the issue on Tuesday when he is due to attend a press conference ahead of United's UEFA Champions League encounter with Turkish champions Bursaspor.

Chief executive Gill has at least hinted some clarification of the Rooney situation would eventually be made.

Gill said: "We will say something at an appropriate time. But this is not an appropriate time."
