Usually, A levels (or GCE O levels/GCSE/IGCSE English Grade C) is enough, and IELTS will not be necessary for entry to/eligibility for British undergraduate degrees. In fact, one of the SPM English subjects will suffice. There are exceptions of course.

Hmmm.... Then what is the point of IELTS ? For those who didn't do well in the A levels or SPM? The fee is 570MYR which is so expensive haha

Certain Universities doesn't accept SPM's GCE-O 1119 grade as fulfilling English Language requirement if so then you would have to sit for IELTS. Or if your 1119 is not a credit then you have to sit for IELTS. When applying for certain critical courses it's also good that you posses IELTS.
When we talk on a more international scale IELTS is a good tool to gauge the ability of people from certain non-English speaking countries. A lot of Universities in the UK,Aussie etc. however are satisfied enough with the 1119 English so they accept it.

Well at RM550 it is quite expensive for a small test. But the IELTS administrators are companies after all.

Most schools in the UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand will not require you to take IELTS as long as you have GCE O level/GCSE/IGCSE English C or better, or have done A levels (in English), this is explicitly stated.

If you "didn't do well" in A levels, then you wouldn't get into a competitive school anyway. But as long as you pass A levels, you no longer need an additional test (IELTS/TOEFL).

The reason why IELTS is common and also asked for by schools is because not everybody takes A levels or GCE/GCSE/IGCSE English - these people need it.

I'm not sure whether IELTS gives an advantage or not (took it just in case, because a lot of schools are really picky, though I didn't really need it/have not yet needed it), I'm hoping it does.

different english tests in different exams pitch english at different levels, and it is difficult, impossible to cross correlate grades from one into another.......even having done an english based pre-u like a levels says nothing about your english proficiency.......it is possible for someone with poor english (maybe ielts band 6) to have 3a's in a-level maths and science........

that's why a standardised test like ielts is useful......it tells the unis, AND the student himself/herself as well, exactly where a student is in english proficiency.......there are 2 types of ielts.....general use (mostly for migration purposes) and academic........

while many unis will accept alternative english benchmarks, major ones will want ielts, and in some cases, it is mandated by law by british border agency that the potential student have adequate english proficiency before they issue student visas (see the visa application form)......

limeuu is correct, someone with rubbish English could still get great A levels results. This happens very frequently. Mine will still be within the 2 year period for visa smile.gif

But, they (UK/Ireland schools) simply do not require additional tests. They do not make it a requirement across the board because many do not need to take it - but it seems to let some people through. If their English is bad, who knows how it will affect their degree study (think of teachers with poor English).

This Statement,

"Your International Passport is the property of the Malaysian Government. It REQUIRES YOU to register at the nearest Malaysian Embassy/Mission once you are out of Malaysia, failing which under Clause 25(2) of the Constitution of Malaysia, your citizenship may be withdrawn."

makes no sense at all.

As a tourist, do I register at the nearest MY Embassy? No.
On a business visit, do I register at the nearest MY Embassy? No.
As a student, do I register at the nearest MY Embassy? No. I get a visa.

Your visa is a requirement from the UK government to enter UK it has nothing to do with Malaysia.
well since the department is for students, the statement is directed to students. Anyway just register yourself, I always wonder why people are so reluctant to regisger themselves it's not like they are charging you anything or something like that and you can do it online not like you have to go there or send by post. It helps the government to keep track of and take care of students overseas and in cases of emergency and it is stated at the back of your Passport.
Notice no. 6
A Malaysian Citizen residing abroad must register his/her name and latest address at the Malaysian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate abroad.

QUOTE
Please bear in mind that your Malaysian International Passport is the Property of the Malaysian Government. Therefore you have to take good care of its safety especially. If you look at the inside of the back cover of your passport, note 3 reminds you to register at your nearest Malaysian Embassy / Malaysian High Commission office, once you are away from Malaysia. You may be deprived of any assistance if you failed to do so. Under Section 25(2) of the Malaysian Constitution, your citizenship may be withdrawn. Since the MSD is part of the department of the embassy / mission and you are a student, then it is your duty to register your goodself and prove that you are loyal to your country. You can register on-line at: www.masduke.net/v3/daftar.php  .You are advised to send a photocopy of your passport, especially pages containing your details and where the visa is stamped when you first arrived at the port of entry of this country. Non-students must register with the embassy / mission office.

Based on the mission statement, the objectives of the department are:

    * To manage students affairs with regard to their financial needs, good behaviour as "little ambassadors" and well being through various programmes jointly organised with them.
    * To monitor their academic performances and guide them where and when necessary by various means, like counselling, outreach activities and organising academic seminars/workshops.
    * To be an enabler in helping the students to be knowledgeable, highly skilled, of exemplary behaviour and highly competitive.
    * To administer efficiently the affairs of the MASDUKE and Malaysia Halls in trying to meet the needs of the clients, i.e., the students and sponsors, in particular as well as facilitating the requests of the Malaysian community residing in the UK and EIRE at large.

The MASDUKE has the following functions and scope of works:

    * To fulfil the needs of students, sponsors and parents in academic affairs through various administrative measures.
    * To provide guidance, be them on academic, social, religious or vocational matters.
    * To look after their welfare and security needs.
    * To manage and administer the department and the Halls and report back periodically to H.E. the Malaysian High Commissioner and the Ministry of Education.
    * To keep and update students records and survey their needs and performances from time to time.

Mistercrono,

So, you said are doing bachelor top-up, right? Does it mean you have a previous diploma or something? I heard a top-up is better than a pre-masters, should you decide to do masters later on. I donot know if that's correct or not.

The  pre-masters and top-up is something that is not yet available in Malaysian local Unis.

Will wait for your friend's feedback for the Masters in Accounting. smile.gif

Sorry it tooks so long, didnt have a chance to talk to my friend haha

I previously have a diploma, I have no idea about what u mean by top up or pre-masters. My friend a local uk guy, done his degree in tourism, and he study same course with me (top up) just to get honours degree. Yeah not available in msia.

So far as I heard from my friend, lecturers and classes are all okay. Friendly module tutor, he/she will help you out a lot. Total 5 sub + 1 thesis. Each of the subject are 60% exam, 40% accessment.

Entry in 2012 means all normal applications start in mid-September 2011.

The only exceptions are medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine/science and Oxbridge courses, which have a deadline in October, and should be sent in earlier in comparison. But then again you would know this if you are going for any of these.

All undergrad applications are through UCAS, no exceptions, not unless you've contacted the school and have confirmation which would be a special case.

My brother has just finish his degree almost a year and he has been working for sime darby ever since he graduated as an account specialist......

Now and then he always seem to be ding dong around with his repetitive job in sime darby as our parents cannot afford to pay for him to further his education(Master Degree) in UK...

He told us that sime darby are giving full scholarship for tuition fees + accomadation + allowance to study oversea(UK) but the draw back is a bond up to 3 years - 6 years or more up to 10 years....so it was not a "yes" choice for him at all as he does not want to serve sime darby for so long.....

Can you guys give me any advice on financial/loans/scholaship to let him pursuit for his master in UK? or is there any other way at all?

Depends I think - you will be bonded for a few years (can range to 5-10 years) and you will get allowance, tuition fees, etc but according to my friends who are scholars, JPA scholars get paid the least compared to other companies like BN, SD, etc.

I don't think it is possible to send food back - call/check with Royal Mail? or Google?

Look on the bright side, he gets a job right after he graduates. There are unemployed people out there AND there are people who would kill for a scholarship just to study in UK. Ask your brother not to be so greedy.
