Hi. May i know that we create bank account when we arrive in UK or we can do it in malaysia  bank (eg HSBC)?

Knowing a few students who have opened up an account with HSBC, DON'T DO IT. Their services are slow and inconsistent. I suggest you open up with Barclays (took about a week to get everything sorted) and TT your money to that account. Bring some cash along to survive the first few weeks and everything should be relatively smooth.

Hi, I am new here. I have secured offers to study in Edinburgh, Manchester and Newcastle U. I am Not a jpa bursary student, from lower-middle income family.

Therefore I depend on scholarship provided by private firms, which most of them had rejected my application. Still pending from 2 other scholarship providers.

I cannot afford to go without sponsorship.

My questions is
1. My estimation for the cost of studying in the UK, is RM150k per year. (Tuition: RM 100k, living cost: RM 50k ) ##correct me if I am wrong!
For four years, it would cost me around RM 600k.

So, are you guys self funding? or taking loans?

2.Anyone facing same situation as mine? (got offers, no scholarships?)

Tuition fees - up to the universities. You will have to check.

About £600 per month, 10 months £6000 plus £2000 miscellanous for the year.
So about £8000 per year. That's RM40,000 per year on living cost.

Note: I put £2000 for miscellanous also quite high already. You don't need £600 per month, I lived with less than that, but you'll have to show sufficient fund when applying for visa.

Hi there.smile.gif
I was told that a student credit card is necessary. Is that so ?
Can we just open a saving account and apply for a Visa Debit Card for money withdrawal wise?
Thanks smile.gif

Credit or Debit, it's up to you. I won't say it's compulsory, but yes, it's necessary, it makes your life so much easier over there. In fact, it's applicable also in Malaysia, you won't have to bring so much cash every time you go for shopping.

I had a ATM/Debit card with me when I was in UK, I rarely use my cash over there, only keep like around 100 pounds of cash with me constantly for emergency use. You buy groceries, eating at restaurants/cafe, majority also accept card payment. Cash only comes handy for transportation, like bus, taxi.

Unless you're a HSBC premier account holder, or else there's no real benefit of using HSBC over other local banks over there. I say that because if you have HSBC premier account in both Malaysia and UK, you can transfer money between this 2 accounts without any service charge.
Another thing, what I heard last time, HSBC over there also got charge something like monthly service charge for non-premier accounts.

if you are flying ba all the way, you should receive a boarding pass for lhr-lba when you check in at changi (ba does not fly to kl)....both ba heathrow arrival and departure will be at terminal 5....

you will need to clear immigration at lhr....that may take some time, depending on the crowds, but from experience, mostly can get through within 20-30min maximum....as a first time student, they may want to check your cxr, and that may take up some more time....then you need to clear security, which again depends on the queue...so 2 hrs would appear adequate but tight transit...

unless there is a delay coming in from changi, but ba will put you on the next flight to leeds...they have 3 flights a day to leeds from lhr...

alternatively, ask the travel agent to put you on the next lba flight anyway, which will give you a comfortable >6hrs transit....

You are under bond, so in the mid term future, dentistry will have a better career future in msia....the medical profession is going to go through a messy and tough time in the near to mid term....

My UCAS offer acceptance deadline is near, I depend on scholarship to go to UK university.
But scholarship decision is out in June/July, so I have to firm my offers before getting news from sponsors.

If at the end I do not secure a scholarship after accepted the offer, I will have to withdraw my place from the university. Will there be any punishment or such for withdrawing?

I studied in UK (4 years) before for my IGCSE years. then I returned due to financial issues. Now I'll be going back after I complete my A levels which I am doing locally.

I like UK very much. I see myself settling there permanently.

This is going to be long winded so please bear with me.
There will be no punishment as far as you are concerned. All you would have done is to inconvenience and deprive another student who actually has the finances and the grades to get into the uni due to you holding the offer.

Sebagai contoh. You applied to Queen Mary and you got an offer. Another student (lets call him John) also applied to Queen Mary but was rejected. Fast forward into the future, you may have the grades but you don't have the money to pay for the degree. But because you were given an offer, John would have chosen others unis to be his/her firm (example : Uni of Staffordshire) and insurance choices (example : Uni of Loughborough) since he was rejected by Queen Mary.

When results day comes along in August 2015 (A levels), John would have actually had the grades and the money to enter Queen Mary but because of you, he was rejected and so he will go to his firm choice which is Uni of Staffordshire. Queen Mary is not going to call him up and tell him that you (Keroroac) are unable to come to Queen Mary due to financial problems so now they will give John an offer to enter Queen Mary. It doesn't work this way in UK as far as UCAS or the Unis are concerned.

The only way for John to enter Queen Mary is for John to call them up on results day and ask if there are any places left for the course. (This phase which normally takes place in the last 2/3 weeks of August is known as the Clearing Stage). If Queen Mary says there are places for John, then he will email his results and Queen Mary will assess his offer and inform him of their decision whether to accept or reject him.

At the same time, certain newspapers will publish in print and also online on the number of available places for home and international places for most courses. So students from UK, Europe and all over the world will call the unis to enquire if they can get a place at that particular uni.
