I've been wondering, could we use our GCEO 1119 as their English assessment test? I know for a fact that certain universities accept this as the English competency test but not sure whether Visa applications are the same or not. Please advice.

the hts will still need to comply with the language requirement and ensure you have the minimum before they can issue the cas.....gce-o /spm 1119 is not in the list of approved english qualifications.....
*
I see. I'm applying for Sheffield, Warwick and a few other but I believe they do recognise 1119 as a valid English assessment test.

Although I believe it, I'd like it if someone could take a look at this particular page;

http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/undergraduate/policies/englang

and see whether the requirements are clear in this case. Thanks in advance, and do advice biggrin.gif

QUOTE(hrevijay @ Jun 26 2013, 10:49 AM)
Certain university's might accept it, but it is NOT acceptable for visa application purposes. However, if you're going to a HTS sponsor for a degree level course, english is no longer a requirement Malaysian students need to fulfill during visa application.
*
What does HTS sponsor mean if I might ask? I actually got an overseas scholarship from Shell, and I was wondering would HTS (I presume highly trusted sponsor) be the university itself or sponsor as in Shell?

But isnt the university that issue the CAS ? And UKBA issue the visa based on CAS number ? I understand that its depend on the UCAS where the offer has IELTS requirement for each individual university.

To be sure, I would advice TS to call the UK embassy to verify.

Just my 2 cp

Edit :

Just realized something,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CIE_O..._Level_subjects

"CIE 1119 English Language (Malaysia) > Malaysia only; expired ????"

Expired already ? what does that meant ? Exam have expiry date ????
*
Interesting, thanks for the advice. Will give them a call tomorrow. biggrin.gif

the english requirement is new, only introduced in 2011....before that, only the respective unis have their own individual language requirement....the tier4 visa does not demand any english certification for people embarking on a degree course.....(there is requirement for lower level courses)

after april 2011, english requirement was added as a requirement by ukba for all courses.....and the hts unis tasked to ensure students' compliance before they issue the cas.....

in any case, just sit for ielts lah....

the gce-0 grading for the 1119 (spm english paper code) is just the essay paper re-marked to gce level.....
*
It's sort of expensive... Main reason why if I could, I'd just use GCEO. Again I'm under scholarship and without it, I would have gone to a normal ipta HEHE biggrin.gif

Any University of Leeds students here? I've already gotten 4/5 offers from UCAS and I'm contemplating between Sheffield and Leeds to continue my degree...

Hi i wanna ask,
What is :MUST BRING: item, clothes and stuff as preparation before I depart to UK.
Where do you normally buy clothes? Uniclo? DKNY? CK?
*
I suggest buying most of your stuff in the UK (which I plan to do). I believe that it'll be cheaper to get them there (certain places....because winter is coming...Game of Thrones ref icon_idea.gif ) Bring along a sweater or two for autumn weather though just in case biggrin.gif

Currently waiting on answer for my ATAS clearance, after which I'll apply for my student visa. I'm currently sponsored by Shell and I was wondering whether the 28 day-money-in-account requirement for Visa applications is a must in my case?

BTW Anyone here studying at University of Leeds?

No need for that. Since you're sponsored, you have to request the financial affidavit from your sponsor, which in this case is Shell for them to confirm your financial capability to live in UK.

Not studying @ Uni of Leeds but I do have friends at there smile.gif
*
Thanks for the answer! I've already gotten a confirmation letter from Shell as to my financial situation. This is good news since I'm pressing for time because ATAS clearance is going to take 20 days to approve.

How are your friends liking Leeds? biggrin.gif

It's good to meet another shell scholar smile.gif When did you get the visa application letter and shell confirmation letter? I have requested one today! Hoping to get it soon..
*
First of all, congratulations! Where and what course are you planning to continue your studies in?
I have yet to start my Visa application (have to wait for ATAS to respond first unfortunately.) I'm getting all the information so that process will go as smoothly as possible. I asked for the Shell Confirmation letter about a month ago, before I submitted my UCAS application (which was around the 18th of June) and received it some 2-3 days later.

I heard that the Shell coordinator is currently on honeymoon, and will be back next week so I believe all emails will start to have replies sometime next week as well.

Hey! Regarding medical checkups, is there a certified medical board that we need to go to in order to get the checkups or can any public or private hospital be suffice (especially for the TB test)?

Only TB tests from these approved clinics will be accepted:

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/countrie...me=null#header3

1 in Penang, 2 in KL, 1 in Sabah, 1 in Sarawak. Book your appointment ASAP as it's visa rush hour now.
*
Thank you for the answer! Would it be okay if I also did my chest x-ray and medical checkup at these clinics as well?

If your condition somehow will affect your studies (and UK being mostly cloudy and gloomy) I suggest you not to go study in the UK.

Wow, you would actually pay to obtain a UK sim card before departure!

Doing the same thing, so that I could contact my folks when I land. It's just postage fees amyways.. No charge for the sim itself. Why, is it weird or something? hmm.gif

What is the cheapest shipping method from here to UK?

I don't mind a longer delivery time but if possible, I want as cheap as possible.

Planning on shipping my desktop there.

Really?  How long are you going there for?

Unless you need a really powerful desktop, you're better off buying a Dell laptop + screen when you're in the UK, and sell it when you're leaving.  As a student, you're entitled to discounts as well.  Any Core i5 machine is more than enough for undergraduate engineering degree.

If you still insist of posting for some reason, you can consider service from Seven Seas, which will take about 70-90 days by sea.  Don't forget to factor in insurance, and packaging as it will no doubt get thrown around during transit.
*
Hey! I'll be there for 4 years so I'll probably need my desktop. I'm a power user that can't handle using a slower computer to do my work unfortunately sweat.gif

Thanks for the suggestion, 3 months sure is a long time however. I'll look into it biggrin.gif Worst comes to worst, I'll just disassemble my main components and get a casing over there.

Out of interest, what are you doing in Leeds for 4 years, PhD presumably?

I'm of the opinion that one is better off buying it locally, and sell it off four years later.  Seven Seas only provide cardboard boxes, and you might want to look into getting your own boxes, e.g. wooden crate, which provides better protection.

The shipping, with all the costs inclusive, like clearing at custom, insurance etc, a guesstimate is it'll cost around 300+ USD, which can be put into your purchase.

I don't think Leeds is that bad, it's close to York, which is a beautiful place.  Plus you have the new Trinity Leeds, which pretty much means you have access to almost everything.
*
I'm actually doing integrated masters in mechanical engineering. Slightly later than normal (I'm going to be 21 this year)

$300 is quite a lot to ship a computer, it's already about 1/3 the cost of my pc. How's computer parts pricing in the UK? I know that laptops tend to be more expensive there than in Malaysia (comparing macbook airs at least)

Yes, we need to submit TB cert. Do remember to make one photocopy for them to keep as you need to submit both original and photocopy.

Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to stop at a stationary store tomorrow to do that. My passport bio page as well?

Alright then. Thanks for the information! By the way, I think I'll be applying for priority visa, how long would it take for them to process my application? Anyone have any experience with using this service?
