I used to own an alpha 300, sold it because i didn't like lugging it around, so usually left it home collecting dust although you can't deny the picture quality is awesome minus the heavy noise with the alpha sensor on higher isos compared to other dslrs.

This is the reason why I am looking at the Nokia N8. Yes, I know it's a camera phone but it goes everywhere I go. Can't say that even for compact camera and the photo taken is supposedly even better than some dedicated compact camera like the Sony HX5.

The N8 is super slow.

Image quality is one thing la.. and while I reckon its normal that people expect their equipment to give them the best image quality by looking at the trends in consumer cameras these days but one crucial aspect that's been neglected is "handling".

It's fine if u wanna shoot inanimate objects but by the time u get the N8 to get ready to take pics... the sun has set, the food has gone stale.... the gf has ran away... the decisive moment has gone.

In that aspect.... the Iphone4's a much better point n shoot tongue.gif

Please tell me more. I prefer good picture instead of speed and that's why I am looking at the N8.

What other would you recommend?

I'm not really a phone person (so I won't know what to recommend u) but I considered the N8 before and have played with it.

In a point n shoot perspective... when see something... u just wanna turn on ur camera/cameraphone and quickly snap right?

With the N8.. have to wait... and wait... and wait for the camera to be operational before you can snap

Eventually I settled with an Iphone 4 (doesn't mean that its the best) cos its so much faster for the camera to start taking pictures.. also the shot-to-shot time.

As for good picture...if you look at all the legendary pictures in history.. most of them are taken with equipment far more "crappier" than ur average cameraphone.

Hence my 2 cents that "image quality" is of lesser importance compared with the shooter and the handling.

ps: I think the Iphone4's like the jack of all trades but master of none. N8 is a one trick pony... good image quality but frustrating to use.

Yes, your understanding of my need is spot on.

I was pretty impressed with the N8 photo quality.

As for time taken to launch the camera 1st shot, yes, they did say N8 is slow like you mentioned:

The sorta comparison in the link is quite pointless actually. Reason being is that you're talking about point n shoots here with almost no control exposure... the difference is so minute and can tip both ways in even the slightest change of shooting conditions.

Personally.. I wouldn't even consider the IXUS or any plain point n shoot cameras. Like you say.. why carry another extra gadget the doesn't give any substantial benefit.

Enthuasiast compacts like the S95 etc is a different ballgame altogether.
The difference is not with the IQ per say but with the controls, in the right hands and know-how (just pointing and shooting will give the same result as any point n shoot camera really) , it can provide spectacular results.

I originally started looking for a GPS camera and was looking at the Panasonic TZ10/20 but came to conclusion I needed a more compact camera with better low light ability and not telephoto. Hence was looking at S95 and 4000IS but they don't have GPS. I will probably re-look at the next generation S95 if they have GPS.

I can not consider your iPhone because it does not have the type of GPS package that Nokia has, namely, free worldwide map and voice navigation.

A camera can not make phone calls. But a Smartphone can take picture so that's the closest we get right now, hence my looking at N8 instead.
