how previous gen you wan?
the batch before i series processors?

to be honest, get a new one, serve you better, cuz clearly, 15" mbp users must be quite a performance demanded.
buy old tech could serve you 2 years? then 2 years later another one?

unless you're not into performance, else go for new one
like if i wait for the nex macbook pro
will it be cheaper for the previous generation ?

lol, jst planning to get 1 for my study for the nex year =]

just a piece of advise, just look into getting whenever you're ready and buy what's on the market

used items, sometimes do depends on luck and i wan you to see this trend
most of the time, new update will have slightly change in price (drop the most)
even you get a refurbished unit, it wont guarantee a super good deal, sometimes you might just spend a bit more to get what's latest on market

Doing a quick search on Google produce lots of result. One of them is this or this if you want to install onto a USB drive.

1) Macs dont use BIOS

Anyway , I've used Firewire external discs with my iBook and they worked fine. However I've yet to test with my MacBook Pro. I doubt newer MacBook Pros support this. I have yet to test boot via USB

1. im not sure why do u need to boot from an external drive to install mac OS? if it's not a macbook air, why cant u juz use the DVD?

2. are you trying to make a USB OSX installer?

3. i have booted my MBP from a cloned external HDD thru USB no problem. obviously performance is slow but it gets the job done

plug in your bootable device and restart your mac, after the mac boot sound, hold alt key, you should able to see your bootable USB device there
