preseason are meant to both test new ideas and to get the team ready for new season. its right to expect some good results but its also right not to expect too much.

i was actually anticipating a win but then, i wont lose my sleep...

but i agree with madmoz...i didnt feel good with all the poor-preseason results last year.......

Arsenal are at it again, winning with couple of goals...of course senior players like Nasri played (and scored) and its still Arsene's team and game...

Grasshopper Zurich 0 Liverpool FC 0: Ian Doyle’s verdict

Jul 22 2010 by Ian Doyle, Daily Post

AS a town one of the lowest tax rates in Switzerland, Zug is home to more than its fair share of millionaires.

But the big names were mostly elsewhere for Liverpool as Roy Hodgson’s experimental line-up earned a creditable draw against Grasshopper in the manager’s first game in charge.

And Hodgson will have been quietly impressed as the youthful line-up held their own on a sultry evening against a Grasshopper side that have already started their domestic campaign.

After all, the manager may yet have to call upon some of those fledgling talents when Liverpool – here wearing their snazzy new third kit – begin their Europa League campaign next Thursday.

The game had barely started when Grasshopper midfielder Veroljub Salatic received a knock that required lengthy treatment.

It set the tone with Nzuzi “Toko” Bundebele later being bundled to the ground by a strong Jay Spearing challenge and Alberto Aquilani causing concern when also hitting the deck.

Liverpool’s first real threat came midway through the half when David Ngog was adjudged marginally offside when released by Aquilani’s pass.

Ngog was then fouled on the edge of the area but Aquilani’s free-kick was easily beaten out by goalkeeper Ivan Benito, before Ngog did well to bring down a long ball but shot hurriedly wide.

Grasshopper came closest shortly before half-time as Toko’s close-range effort was well blocked by Diego Cavalieri.

Youngsters David Amoo, Steve Irwin, Thomas Ince, Viktor Pallson and Lauri Della Valle all enjoyed their first taste of action at this level.

Nathan Eccleston livened a dour second half with a lengthy run that culminated with a shot dragged wide.

Last night was the first sight in a Liverpool shirt of young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Rangy, energetic and with promising distribution, it’s easy to see why comparisons have been made to a young Steven Gerrard.

QUOTE(madmoz @ Jul 22 2010, 02:19 PM)
Aren't preseason games meant to slowly build your players to match fitness? Granted, most of our first eleven just came back from WC holidays (which in a way puts paid to the story of the squad being thin or crap imho) but surely most would have benefited from a run out?

I might not know much about football but i do know that it is always too convenient to blame poor preseason games on 'youth' players, second stringers etc etc... heck we did a lot of that last season doh.gif It is too easy to ignore the alarm bells that are could potentially be ringing, no?
*
the problem wif LFC is tat its first eleven is not even "up to par" , wat worse can the second stringers do??

look at Spain's national team, even its second stringers will tingle the opponent's spine, let alone the first eleven icon_rolleyes.gif

so the problem is our second stringers and the New Manager are looking into tat area which Rafa din pay much attention to vmad.gif

btw, Pacheco scored in Spain's Under 19 match yesterday, he grabbed the the winner actually....i juz hope RH will giv this youngster more play time

friendlies and pre-season matches are not meant to evaluate the club's first eleven, its to give exposure to younger players and test them out.

the draw means nothing, just that the team needs more depth. no point going around crying that our team will finish 7th again.

i dont get the standards corrupted thing, but the shirt looks great. haha... fans need to learn to get behind the team and support it.

Huntelaar to sign for Liverpool

Milan striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will join Liverpool, with Ryan Babel heading the other way as part of the deal, claims Il Corriere dello Sport.

On Tuesday Huntelaar was reportedly in Manchester, leading to speculation talks with either Manchester City or Manchester United are impending.

However, the latest reports from Italy suggest he could join Liverpool. Huntelaar was not at Milanello on Wednesday, leading to further belief his future is away from Milan.

IF THIS TRUE...THEN GOOD...

LFC make player-swap offer to Nice

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is making a player-swap offer for Nice striker Loic Remy as he tries to raise funds and beat off West Ham to his signature.

Hodgson angling for Hyypia return

New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is hoping to lure former Reds great Sami Hyypia back to Anfield.

Hyypia bid a tearful farewell to the club in 2009 - coming on as a substitute in the season's final game against Tottenham Hotspurs.

In a decade at Liverpool, the Finn played 317 games, scoring 22 goals and making himself a permanent fixture in defence for the Reds.

He moved to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2009, but now a report in the Daily Mirror suggests Hodgson might create a player-coach role in a bid to bring the 36-year-old back into the Liverpool fold.

Hodgson has already pulled off something off a coup by signing Joe Cole and convincing Steven Gerrard to stay despite no Champions League football in the upcoming season.

Young Scottish defender Danny Wilson has already signed for the club in what has been an encouraging start to Hodgson's reign.

There has been a plethora of exits as well, with Yossi Benayoun moving to Stamford Bridge and Alberto Riera exiting for Olympiakos.

Midfielder Javier Mascherano is also reportedly on his way out to reunite with Rafael Benitez at Inter Milan.

Hyypia would be a good signing, since the veteran would certainly help the rebuilding process at Anfield with his experience and pedigree.
