Common Kelvin White Balance Settings :
2500K - very strong orange tungsten light
2800K - strong orange tungsten light
3200K - yellowish tungsten light
4500K M6 - flourescent light (most flourescent tubes are green even though our eyes don't see it)
5500K - flash
6500K - daylight (or daylight-balanced flourescent light)
9900K - strong blue stage lighting or evening light

Xenon lighting is rare but that should be between 7000-9000K.

Whenever you enter a new situation that has different WB, just set your Kelvin WB again and test with one shot. You

should be able to do this with practice.

With the Sony A300 and A350, you can use Live View and see the effect of changing Kelvin WB... live!

M = Magenta
G = Green
2500K = Blue
9900K = Amber

Take a picture. Supposing the picture is very Green, you need to add the opposite which is Magenta. If the picture is

too Blue you need to go closer to Amber. So if the picture is very blue-green-ish, you will need to go closer to 9900K

M9.

To prevent the built-in flash from appearing in pictures when in wireless flash mode, you can use any of these

methods, or a combination of them:

- use a darker aperture (e.g. F11)
- use a lower ISO (e.g. ISO100)
- use a shutter speed faster than your flash sync speed so that High Speed Sync is activated (e.g. 1/320th of a

second)
- use a piece of exposed, developed negative film in front of your pop-up flash

Below are the official additional accessories* that comes with respective Sony Alpha camera :

Remote Commander clip - A100, A200, A300, A350, A700, A900
Eyepiece cover / flash hotshoe cover holder - A100, A200, A300, A350, A700
Cheap Sony neckstrap vmad.gif - A200, A300, A350
Good Sony neckstrap - A100, A700, A900

amadeo, thanks!

faizalmzain: Nicely done for #1 - seems you have decent control over picking backgrounds for bokeh.

8tvt: Could crop it so the diagonals are the only things in the picture.

ianho: AMAZING! Congratulations! Now you don't have to worry about dust on sensor (not that you had to, on the NEX-3, either...)

zstan: Yes you can!

guys with NEX, how do you guys recommend on bringing the NEX only for traveling? the pancake would be wide enough for landscape right? how about the image quality of the lens and the NEX itself, is it worth to bring NEX only? or u will still bring your DSLR?

NEX doesn't replace the DSLR and you might felt likely to going for DSLR if you want a long lasting battery, better handling, more choice of lens and also better working field

NEX (also known as EVIL camera) just more suite for casual shooting with some advance features and quality

Well, maybe you can Google to read the comparisons and reviews on these two models?
I'm a Canon EOS 550D user though. I can tell you it is a very nice camera at its humbly reasonable pricing. biggrin.gif

guys with NEX, how do you guys recommend on bringing the NEX only for traveling? the pancake would be wide enough for landscape right? how about the image quality of the lens and the NEX itself, is it worth to bring NEX only? or u will still bring your DSLR?
*

well, I would actually travel with just the NEX. Look at the equipment I have, yet I'm in looooooooooove with the NEX. wub.gif

I din say that the photo quality sucks. Just that the colour is too soft and not up to my liking.

Maybe it is on default setting?
But seriously, I am still impressed by the ISO control ...

If it's a tough decision, get both smile.gif

1 a550 and 1 eos550... hahaha... use both, then see which one you like, and sell the other one away smile.gif
If not, keep both..2 bodies is useful

eos 550 damn gay lar...

not to forget, a550 got hdr function and tilt LCD smile.gif
*
Be neutral lar no need so spearheading

Both have their advantages and disadvantages

If you want to pick between A550 and 550D here's some comparison :

On Alpha A550

-Street price now is cheaper than the EOS 550D but closer price range than the EOS500D
-It have 5 FPS ability (550D only 3.7FPS) and 7 FPS (non-AF tracking, locked focus and exposure on first shot)
-It have better color dynamic range / color separation compare to 550D together with high dynamic range (HDR) features
-Built-in IS which works on any lens you attach
-Dual Live View mode: Quick 4FPS Live View togethe with x11 magnify MF Live View as all the other traditional DSLR does

On EOS 550D

-Movie Mode on full hd
-Better IS performance on the kit lens (Viewfinder will get the stabilizing effect when you zoom on long focal range)
-Has bundle PC-Software for PC Remote control
-Smaller size compare to A550
-Sharper edge or image (compare to Sony 1855SAM) on the kit lens
-Slightly larger viewfinder

So if you're in sports or action photography or prefer using some cheaper price good quality lens which doesn't IS but you want the IS experince, I say A550 maybe your consideration

If you're not hype on action shooting, like the IS-Lens system which benefits you to get stabilize effect on both viewfinder and the image, prefer movie in the package, 550D maybe your consideration

ya... we are sharing the same hobby, photography.

u use a550, you snap photos
u use eos550, u snap photos too...

both are the same thing...we are in the same interest. So whichever you choose, you still in the photography network...

Of course, you come Alpha thread, sure we recommend alpha camera smile.gif

i'm not a good photographer and upload pictures to facebook only. so NEX-3 is more than sufficient for me. biggrin.gif

mastering89: Eh, why not find the proper step up ring for this?

ianho: Wah, so you can have one 16mm with the fisheye adapter hooked on, all the time!

d4rkholeang3l: Wow light painting with glass is awesome!

signither: Previously with the A900;

Daytime Set
Sony A900
Sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4.0
Minolta 70-210mm F4.0 beercan

Nighttime Set
Sony A900
Sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4.0
Minolta 50mm F1.4
Sony HVL-F20AM

Clubbing Set
Sony Cybershot WX-1

I don't actually travel much - mostly company trips where the clubbing happens within the hotel premises so I can bring just the nighttime set.

Also, for real travel I end up not using the flash at all.

So yeah... I forsee this being my setup:

Daytime Set
Sony NEX-5
Sony HVL-F7S
Sony E 16mm F2.8
Sony LA-EA1 lens adapter
Minolta 24-105mm F3.5-4.5(D)

Nighttime Set
Sony NEX-5
Sony HVL-F7S
Sony E 16mm F2.8
Sony LA-EA1 lens adapter
Minolta 50mm F1.4

Clubbing Set
Sony NEX-5
Sony HVL-F7S
Sony E 16mm F2.8

The Sony LA-EA1 and 24-105mm is very pocketable.

Still, 24 megapixels is 24 megapixels... and I haven't managed to open the NEX-5 RAWs yet so I can't tell if they're solid enough and as pullable as the A900 RAWs are. Though, in your case, since you don't have an A850 anymore, the only reason to carry an A700 around is if you want to do birding.

fruitie: To be honest - I'd rate the A550, 550D and NEX-5 to all have the same ISO performance. DxOMark proves this also, although the Canon is more colorblind in the red channel.

Having looked at the 1D MkIII colors versus the D300 and A900 on a X-Rite Color Checker Passport - Canon colors are generally muted and less vibrant. The Adobe Standard profiles for each camera show the Nikon and Sony to have more flourescent, vibrant yellows - but this is actually overdone, when we loaded the X-Rite-generated profiles.

QUOTE(wingster @ Jul 11 2010, 12:00 AM)

If you're not hype on action shooting, like the IS-Lens system which benefits you to get stabilize effect on both viewfinder and the image, prefer movie in the package, 550D maybe your consideration
so your rationale i find rather strange.

sports shooting - 5fps vs 3.7 fps? they make little difference.

the on-lens IS (viewable on viewfinder) is a lot more helpful when it comes to shooting sports activity / moving subject.

i think you also missed out A550 can wireless trigger flash, 550D cannot.

in the end both have their users, both are good camera. smile.gif choice is up to the person.

if you're looking at Sony camp, A550 is good. A230 / A330 / A380 on the other hand, bleh, hated it. ergonomically speaking very lousy, which unlike the A200 / A300 / A350. biggrin.gif in fact can get used A200 / A300 at very cheap price nowadays, with warranty some more.

Just wanna share with you guys Nex's Hand-held Twillight mode. I was with my friend doing night shooting. The place where he stand was too dark, and i am thinking of using this mode to test it. So, here it is:

user posted image

The ISO being cranked up to ISO6400, and once you push the shutter button, it will simultaneously took 6 shots straight in a row. Yes, it is noisy. But for me, it is usable. At least I know what my friend was trying to do. During the shot, I hardly see him, except for the white shirt. After the shot, the camera, the tripod are now visible.

hmm, first , u need to get a black cardboard for the backdrop...

normally, i shoot this type of shot in dark room..

(room lights on)
1. Set up all your stuff.
2. Auto focus at your subject
3. After you get focus already, switch the lens to manual focus.

Turn off the lights.

4. Press the shutter ( Shutter priority mode @ 30 seconds )
5. Swing your LED torch.
6. Wait for picture to load smile.gif

the idea is to have LONG EXPOSURE so as you move, the sensor captures the lights as you move it around.

using FLASH would defeat the purpose as the flash to light up the scene and your shutter will be fast. even if it's slow shutter, flash would spoil the capture.

ianho: u really in love with NEX ya. maybe i should try on my own first la. few mins during TT doesn't really show me the the true capability of NEX. tak puas, many waiting for their turn to molest it. lol.

lwliam: nothing much. except that uncle ian bought another NEX today. lol.

albnok: birding? lol. but i'm kinda leaning to something like that now, taking out my DSLR for certain purpose. coz i only shoot landscape and football most of the time. so now a700 and 70200G would be my weapon of choice for football. for landscape, kinda lost the wideness for 17-35mm when i downgrade from a850 to a700 (but totally awesome for football). 17mm kinda ok for me, but don't really like the distortion on 17mm, so thinking maybe i wanna get 16mm prime on NEX to tackle the issue. but first i need to make sure that NEX + 16mm would be able to cater my needs for landscape photography and maybe my daily camera. then if i bring them both, i'll be like:

Primary weapon: a700 + 70200G
Side arm: NEX (3 or 5) + 16mm

signither: Eh, the KM 17-35mm should have less distortion on APS-C (or at least, it crops some of it out.)

I wouldn't know how the distortion of the 16mm fares compared to the 17-35mm. I take it that you haven't met the pancake?

I think video and the 70-200mm F2.8G SSM would go great together. You'll need to practice your manual focus tracking though (I'm pretty sure it's not impossible as I've done some easy tracking with the Samyang 85mm F1.4 on walking subjects.) The F-mount to E-mount adapter should be coming anytime soon - your 135mm F2.8 should find a new home on the NEX.

Talking about this makes me want to bring my beercan and NEX-5 out to a football field just to see if I can track them successfully!

It's really just down to 1080i/50fps versus 720p/29.97fps. I picked the NEX-5 for the magnesium alloy body, for the heavy lenses.

@eddybeh
when you feel you got extra money.. tongue.gif
when you want catch up the latest and the most luxury gear..
when your a100 go west (touch wood) wahaha..

i think people will normally say i want upgrade, because i finish explore my camera and find it don't suit me or i demand for more than the camera can produce (like higher iso range -> flagship or pro camera, or better dynamic range shown -> retro to film wahaha, or faster burst speed -> machine gun D3s).

raynox is easy to use and cheapest yet quality solution for macrophotography.. but better pair it with tele lens, if kit lens, you have to real close to object to focus and have certain focal length will cause serious vignette

its a Porsche Cayenne GTS, not sure about the number plate though...

there were 2 Cayennes, 1 6-series (if u look at the very right edge, you'll notice it), 1 350z, and my accord trying to catch up all the way >< (not going to say how fast i was clocking on the meters)

where do u see noise? its ISO200, CMOS's base ISO...

if its noise, its probably from the postprocessing, or it could be from the resizing done by imageshack

Would have been a lot nicer if u used slow shutter to show motion. I thought it was parked there until u mentioned the high speeds.

guys, have a very noob question. how we know it's time to upgrade? just wanted to know although i still don know how to use all functions of my a100. XP
*
You know it's time for upgrade when you go out shooting and you always come back wishing you had some gear or other. E.g. you go out and shoot and you come back and feel that you wanted to go wider and that's always the case. Then you know it's time to get a wider lens.

Or you go out, come back and wish that you had more shallow DOF. Then you know it's time to get a large aperture lens.

You will know it's time to upgrade when you know exactly what it is you want next. If you're asking questions like should I buy A lens or B lens or should I get A lens or a flash, then you're not ready to upgrade.

signither: Eh, the KM 17-35mm should have less distortion on APS-C (or at least, it crops some of it out.)

I wouldn't know how the distortion of the 16mm fares compared to the 17-35mm. I take it that you haven't met the pancake?

It's really just down to 1080i/50fps versus 720p/29.97fps. I picked the NEX-5 for the magnesium alloy body, for the heavy lenses.
*
less distortion, but still, sometimes can see them very obvious. maybe have to work on my composition.

u are right, i never tested the pancake. but i thought prime lenses have no distortion issue, or i'm wrong? lol.

not sure if need higher format vid. but kinda like bigger grip for my big hand. and magnesium body, kinda nice if i decided to pair with heavy lens later.

Photoshop fisheye is lame la. Real fisheye really can get the whole scene in. Photoshop is only distorting it n not allowing u to get the whole scene in.

i nearly always prefer to drive own car to wedding shoots, its for own convenience coz i sometimes might need to overnight at their place (and usually its a motel room) so, in the morning, their family will be too busy with their stuffs, and i wouldnt wanna hassle them to come fetch me.

as a starting point, try 1/30 seconds in aperture priority with flash on Auto. in fact, in that pic, the background is actually over exposed.

i nearly always prefer to drive own car to wedding shoots, its for own convenience coz i sometimes might need to overnight at their place (and usually its a motel room) so, in the morning, their family will be too busy with their stuffs, and i wouldnt wanna hassle them to come fetch me.

No la, I mean for those shots where u need to shoot the wedding car on the road.

Hi Alpha thread sifus.I am a new Nex 5 user.
Got a question to ask why does sweep panorama shutter speed for zoom lens is 1/60 but when change to pancake lens is 1/500.
This makes the image from pancake lens too dark. in addition i experience some brown discoloration in the pictures in sweep panorama mode in pancake lens.
Anyone experiencing the same thing ?

It is exactly the same camera. NEX5 just got Magnesium body n 1080i video n can use the Alpha IR remote control. That's the only difference. Which 1 u take depends on whether ur bekside itchy enuf to pay more only. laugh.gif

Exactly... is it hardware or software which controls the FullHD movie?
If Software, then it could be hacked, right ?

I use pancake n fisheye for sweep panorama both oso very nice, no problems. Only problem for most ppl is u need to practice a smooth sweeping motion for a nice seamless picture. Experienced photogs who r good at panning will get much better results.

always be confident of yourself and know your gear inside out before accepting a paid job (even unpaid ones need to be extra sure that they have an extra photographer covering other than you).. you do not want to screw up other people's day/event/ceremony and in the end, hand in under/over exposed pics with wrong white balance..

Whether or not it does 1080i has nothing to do with the sensor. It's 1 of the ways Sony justify the higher price tag for the NEX-5. Seriously IMO, paying so much more for the NEX-5 is a bit crazy. The IR remote I would say 99% ppl wont use 1. Magnesium body doesn't serve any purpose on a small non weather sealed compact camera anyway. N most ppl dont own 1080 TVs so whats the point of the 1080 cam?

cassplayer: AdobeRGB shows some difference in the reds.

Kul | Mo0: You're forgetting to budget for the LA-EA1 lens adapter. You'll love it for video!

signither: Prime lenses do have distortion - I've run a few through DxO and even though it is not obvious, you'll see it after DxO corrects it.

kopitiam: Use a higher ISO and slower shutter speed to allow ambient light to light up the back.

fansoption: Ah, good focusing this time! smile.gif #6 is close to being something really good.

davidwee1987: Sweep Panorama needs 1/500th of a second - it does not work well indoors!

The reason why you are seeing brown discoloration is because you are shooting in flourescent light, which flickers at 50 Hz - the brown is actually ambient light.

If you set a high ISO and take burst shots at 7 FPS, you will see each frame have different colors of dark brown and flourescent green!

destfull: No, the NEX flash cannot trigger the F58, though it can trigger my Sunpak PF20XD. I'm waiting for China to make an adapter!

ianho: Thanks for the pr0n! And I wonder where the lens-ID layer for Macs come from.

Somebody used a Canon Extension Tube to make a EF-to-E adapter!

If you're trying to show the ring in the shot, then you need to get closer. Much closer. As it is the shot is very cluttered and I do not know where to look at first glance. The ring is just a tiny speck in the whole frame. The handbag on the top right is very distracting. Just my 2 cents...

you mean like this?

I've took this one first but somehow it doesn't justify the whole ring in a cage setup. so went out back to capture it. But yeah its 6 dulang in on top of one table and its hard to compose. Any idea how not to make a distracting shoot with in a tight situation? blur out the rest?

Uzumaki : The ring is small and it's hard to get it in it's surrounding without having it appear too small. Maybe if you could move the whole cage to somewhere with a more neutral background?

braindead_fr3ak: LOL it should be the other way around!

Hmmm if you have a camera operator on yours and an extra memory card you could interweave the videos (I've always found gig videos shot with one camera to be boring - having 2 camera angles help immensely, you get to flip back and forth!)

Uzumaki NaruTo: Yes it is indeed a spot-the-ring! I would actually give each dulang its individual portrait.

So does the second shoot works? The zoomed out one are meant to show the cage. Perhaps i should blur out the bag so that i can redirect the user's view to the cage itself. Many thanks for the input.

albnok: Thank for the input. My next chance would be on the November as my wife's sister turn to get married laugh.gif Perhaps can tag along with the official photographer.

Uzumaki : For me the second shot is better than the first. I would have used greater DOF to get the rose in focus too and moved the foreground bokeh out of the way. That's how I would play it.

since yamiya only provide FOC shipping for more than RM100 order~

try shashinki oso lar~ http://shashinki.com/shop/lenspen-sensorkl...ted-p-2755.html

since shashinki only need RM50 order to entitle for free shipping~ maybe u can throw in another cheap item to make it more than 50 bux~ tongue.gif

As for citylink or pos laju~ they will drop the item as long as ur home/office has someone to sign it and collect~ if not u gotta go to pos office or citylink nearest outlet to collect there~

deadangel: Post some pictures and we'll see what we can advise.

ezra_29: Yes, image quality is dSLR quality on the NEX.

braindead_fr3ak: Not today, but I'll come for your gig! And perhaps you could pass your NEX to someone else, not necessarily someone who has a NEX (maybe signither) just to get a hands-on feel for video. Since he has experience in manual focus lenses.

The beauty of having 2 cameras is that we can alternate between two angles. Camera B's footage is used when Camera A is moving from one angle to another. Optionally Camera C gives cutscenes of the crowd.

Best thing is, you can take the audio channels from different cameras and get enhanced stereo separation!

Hmmm actually since I'm coming from work, I'll bring my office laptop so the videos can be transferred on the spot to you (instead of you having to bring an extra memory card to get the video off my camera.)

Though, what would be most ideal is if the videographers all had the LA-EA1 lens adapter - the current E-mount lenses are insufficient for No Black Tie's lighting. I can bring my F1.4, F1.4 and F1.8.

We should have a TT before the gig, to train the videographers on manual focus technique - my friend was complaining about the small focus ring on the Minolta 50mm F3.5 Macro 1:2 (as well as any classic Minolta) and he kept going in and out of focus clumsily. I showed him how to get tighter, slower MF action that looks more like how the Panasonic GF-1 does it. The NEX focuses very fast but quite jumpily sometimes.

mastering89: Shouldn't be, unless without the ND8 it is overexposed.

U fellas wiping CMOS n CCD sensors with cloths n what nots must be insane. rclxub.gif
Where go ppl simply take cloth n rub 1? Even with sensorklear is risky and the service centers don't even recommend that we do it.

zstan, its called be prepared for shooting the day before you actually shoot. And that includes checking for dust on sensor and lenses. I always do a complete dust/smudge check on all lenses the night before. As for sensor dust, touchwood, i hv not gotten it so far. Its mainly caused by where/when/how you change lenses that causes it, it wont appear out of nowhere. And its crazy to use 'silk'/microfibre cloth to touch the sensor. They carry SO much fine dust, however few there may be.

Blower kena sensor n got smudge means kena plastic transference oredi. The plastic from the tip is probably burned in oredi. This is y the techies always say don't mess with cleaning sensor unless ur absolutely sure of what ur doing.

Added on July 12, 2010, 5:08 pmBtw, what will they do to my flash if I send it in for warranty check, the head seems like there's something stuck inside so it's kinda hard for me to turn it.

And if I send my camera for them to clean at the HQ, just bring the cam & let them clean? Or need bring warranty card etc?

Lol okay, btw I just spotted alot of micro dust spots through the viewfinder, I took my lens out and looked at the mirror on top, can see abit of dust & finger print like marks.

But the thing is, I never lay my finger print beyond there before? D:

cassplayer, do NOT touch anything inside there if you are not sure of what you're doing especially if the 'distractions' u see does not affect the output quality. U might jz make it worse. The 'fingerprint' mark u see is normal. Its a fresnal lens, meant to enlarge the image u see from the mirror.

I just used a blower to blow whatever I can away while facing my camera down (dust cannot travel upwards). Can see it's better after that already, but still slight super micro black dots on. Doesnt affect my IQ though.

Oh, and someone recommended using a cotton bud to gently swipe over the mirror (not the sensor), recommended or not?

as long its not the sensor, then technically, its alright... unless you're OCD enough to need to nitpick on the tiniest of dust.. use an alcohol based solvent to dip the cotton bud with, so that dust will stick on it and prevent introducing more dust on it (if u use a dry cotton bud)

as long its not the sensor, then technically, its alright... unless you're OCD enough to need to nitpick on the tiniest of dust.. use an alcohol based solvent to dip the cotton bud with, so that dust will stick on it and prevent introducing more dust on it (if u use a dry cotton bud)
*
Ah noted, thanks for the tips laugh.gif

Will go look and see if I have that alcohol based solvent at home or not, people use that cause it evaporates immediately right?

If you like to go light carry and travel the most, F20AM

If you quite serious about flash photography with budget, F42AM

If you really serious about flash photography, interested on strobing and tilt-shift ability, go the highest end F58AM

(: Just my 2 cent

3rd Party Flash is not much recommended in Sony range unless you know which one is good and suites you...

Budget RM500? Add RM100 more and get a second hand F42 good condition one.

Make sure you test it properly to prevent disappointment
