Sup I just got my HP Mini from TMnet Unipack.

I say its awesome. Totally changed my view on netbook handling on heavy duty stuff.

According to other forummer, doing a readyboost is better than upgrading my RAM? Maybe do both so that I can pull more stuff out.

So far with these much stuff going on in my netbook

I had Franson GPSGate with Garmin GPS paired up. Gonna love this stuff, can bring this netbook on the go! Because its light and fast!

Well not really interested in watching movie in netbook anyway. It can play 720P Just fine on WMP. or just listening to music will do.

Can do a lot of stuff. UP, Unlimited Potential

had a problem with the netbook speaker. apparently only one of the 2 sides works, and no matter which way i adjusted the speaker balance from the control panel, only one the right side work while the left side is soundless.

since i bought this 2nd hand, can i get a warranty cover from HP? no warranty card given to me when i bought it though...

Stardust & pioneer, are you guys sure? Bcoz i checked with my cousin who also have the same unit from TM package, his unit got sound coming out from both sides of the speaker hole. If this model only intended to have 1 speaker, then why make 2 speaker hole? Could it be that some batch got manufacturing defect thus only 1 speaker functioning?

Anyway, i sent mine to the HP service centre in damansara today. Yeah, no need warranty card, they found the record and warranty is valid. Their technician will check it out and let me know in 3 days time. If that unit is only single speaker, they should've known it and inform on the spot no? Now wait for friday.

yeah... sure... now that you've mentioned it, i've never really looked at the manual... i'll check it out tonite. if indeed only 1 single speaker, then it'd be very, very weird that my cousin's unit have dual speakers.

did you upgraded it yourself? how do you open the cover? i took out the battery and saw an orange colored lever. pulled it and it snapped but the lower cover still stuck to the body... damn... i'd really loved to upgrade the ram, as win7 starter on this unit is really slow... by the way what brand, type and price of the ram?

hi there. i have the same problem with you. found out only 1 side of speaker is functioning. when u go control panel adjust left and right, the sound comes from the only speaker. sent it in to HP service centre yday. received call juz now.

The netbook equipped with 1 speaker only..

LOLx...! and for those who wish to upgrade ram to 2gb, prepare for RM200! "Its HP's ram, so it will cost you more.", said from the staff..

my frens netbook cant use F11 recovery anymore because he formated drive c and install fresh new win7 ultimate.. but drive D: recovery still there. anything can do to get that function back?

mine upgraded to win7 utimate (upgrade not fresh format) and F11 recovery still function as usual.. but last night i try recover my system, OS back to HP original W7 starter....

so if u want to get rid of win7 starter, dont fresh format drive c, can only upgrade if u want F11 recovery...

deng!.. my sister ask his fren to install XXX version of win7 ultimate on her hp mini 110 because he can resist win7 starter limitation on theme and wallpaper.. now she can use recovery anymore. her netbook explorer.exe keep crash and windows not stable (always hang, prompt to restart explorer.exe, at least got 1 BSOD/day).. she always call me to complain about it!
i already ask her to uninstall all the software like codec, acdsee, media plyer, winamp still not solve the problem!.
i think her fren use corrupted installer.
the recovery partition drive D: still there.

can somebody create backup recovery disk and s end it to me? is it possible to to do that?
can somebody with HP mini netbook+ext DVD writer PM me because i want to buy recovery disk to try recovery. my sister study @ JB as i stay in penang!..

please PM me. urgent!

and ask her fren to format it to W7U....

i can send to her W7U installer in USB drive but i prefer to use recovery function as she can recover it anytime if problem happened!.. she dont know how to format...

if i can regain F11 recovery function easy for her!...

so anybody can help me create DVD recovery?.

alredy check HP site. stated there better creat recovery Disc before format. if fail to do so, then F11 cant function..
for US/UK people, they can order recovery disc. but not malaysia..

already call HP care, they can restore HDD to its original state (default setting) with charge!.. dont know how much!

2) no need format, reinstallation.

i have few questions here:
1) is this 110 worse than 210 ?
2) the default Windows 7 Starter ady consumed 7xxMB of RAM in plain startup, possible to upgrade to 4GB RAM for better performance?
3) do I need Cooling Pad to prevent overheating?
4) i checked HP website, Warranty End Date: 2011-09-10, not 2 years meh?
5) can i cut off the LAN port seal/cap ? it is kinda irritating laugh.gif
6) do i need to activate the pre-installed Norton AV? can i use Kaspersky?
7) is it normal to hear the fan noise?
8) is my Netbook hardwares temp normal?? icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

1) 110 vs 210, the specs some win some lose, but overall i think 210 better
2) try uninstall or remove all the bloatware, Atom only support up to 2GB ram, kenot 4GB, 4GB is for notebook
3) cooling pad, up to you u need or not, but for me i will always switch to sleep mode when not in use
4) email HP to extend your warranty to two years (carepack-admin-msia@hp.com)
5) you can cut the LAN port cap, it won't void your warranty
6) if you don't like Norton AV, mar dont need activate loh, and try remove it if you dont like Norton, and install Kaspersky since you like it, i personally never use AV, LOL!
7) yes fan noise is normal
8) yes normal after long period hour of usage

also for the person who ask for recovery disc, i can't remember his/her name, u can always sent back to HP centre to get the harddisk duplicate for the original state including all the restoration partition, but not sure does this service covered under warranty or not, go check yourself.

ms office dont have serial no, if u want the serial no you need to buy it, the one installed for you is for trial until u enter the serial no.

if you want to go into BIOS, just spam the ESC key when you turn on your laptop. Then choose the option to go into BIOS option.

I do think 110 is faster though, provided that the processor is 1.8XGHz and a/b/g/n wireless. the 5400 rpm HDD can always be replaced.

anyone compare before the HP Mini 210 vs HP Mini 110 from TM Uni Package?

Here is what I gather:

HP Mini 210 better than 110:
a) island/chiclet keyboard
b) stylish
c) 7200rpm hardisk

HP Mini 110 better than 210:
a) 1.8GHz processor.

Do I get this right?

a/b/g/n wireless.

Honestly I think 110 is better than 210.

The more stylish a notebook/netbook is, the more I dislike it.

But they do looks the same though, except for the touchpad area.

110 seems bigger. hmm.gif

and to improve netbook performance, use a 4GB SD card as a readyboost media for windows.

Pretty sure when you slot in the SD card, there will be this autorun thingy.

Select Readyboost from there.

Google up readyboost to read more on it

Heard it works though, why not give it a try? can always use 1GB/2GB

110 got the software, HP Navigator, buit no GPS antena built in. Since it got bluetooth, then you can pair it with an external receiver lor... i think the external receiver should cost less than RM250 right? Havent had the chance to try it out since i don have the receiver.

plugged in the 4 GB card into the slot, dedicated the whole card for ReadyBoost use. The Windows Experience index number didnt change. Tried playing some fb games... faster response is noticeable, but very, very minimal difference... haih....

now wait awhile to kumpul money before buy 2GB RAM.

Hello fellow HP Mini lovers~

Please excuse my noobishness, I'm not very familiar with HP systems. My friends' HP Mini 110's FN keys don't work... are there any drivers/programs which is responsible for these keys? O___O
By the way, what is the HP Quick Sync thingy and is it really important/useful? Do let me know dear sifus, thanks thanks! icon_rolleyes.gif

Pull the orange lever and the cover will open slightly.
then catch the opened side and just rip/pull to open the whole bottom plastic.

Guys, I'm about to buy this laptop for my Wife-To-Be.
She's a THR.FM cruiser, thus she travels a lot.

Although I have a few question I wanted to ask before I proceed with the purchase of this exact model.
I'm thinking of upgrading the RAM from 1GB to 2GB since I'll be installing Windows 7 Ultimate on this laptop afterwards. Maybe.

1. What's the total weight of this laptop without AC-adapter connected to it [With battery attched to the laptop offcourse]?
2. Has anyone ever tried installing Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit on this laptop? If you have, how's the performance?
3. How's the overall speed when Yahoo! Messenger with My Webcam running on background, does windows lag a lot or just a little bit with only 1GB of ram installed?
4. Will Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit slow down this laptop or would it run at the same speed as Windows 7 Starter 32 Bit?

QUOTE(andrewhtf @ Jul 21 2010, 09:41 PM)
i think the external receiver should cost less than RM250 right?
Buy from eBay worldwide, it's cheaper.
http://cgi.ebay.com/65CH-USB-GPS-Dongle-Ca...#ht_1795wt_2290

US$29.90 X 3.4 = RM101.66

Current US to RM exchange is 3.2, but you have to include PayPal charges, so the currency exchance should be 3.4 instead.

PS: Never buy a Bluetooth GPS receiver, it's slow. Even the cheapest USB GPS receiver can beat the most expensive Bluetooh GPS receiver.

Here is my answer.

I have replaced my original DDR2 1GB with DDR2 2GB and using Sandisk 4GB SD Card with 30 MB/s class 6. In term of windows booting up time it was improved from the original of 1.10 min to 1min.

From my observation, if you upgraded the the RAM to 2GB the overall performance during the boot up and shut down will still be same as having 1GB of memory but it will allow you to open up more tab while you browsing and other application e.g. Word, Excel smoothly.

For the SD Card, you could observe there is really an improvement during boot up and shut down time. My overall improvement for the boot up time was improved by 14.29% (60/70).

Thanks for the answer everyone.
Then Windows 7 Ultimate it is.

1 minute bootup eyh? That's pretty slow. Hmm. Readyboost? Hmm again.
Maybe if I snuck in a 4GB SDHC Class 10 the speed will be even faster.

About the weight, damn, I was hoping it'll be less than 1KG. This way, she won't mind carrying it in her handbag.
Does the unit comes with a car charger? If not, where to buy?

That's why I want it to be as light & small as possible.

Checked almost all netbook brands & models but nothing beats size & weight of a Vaio P.
Although the price is a little bit scary as 1 unit of Vaio P can buy 3 units of HP Mini 110. sweat.gif

It's not for work anyway.
She's a THR.FM Cruiser, she travels a lot and she needs to post up twitter, facebook post a lot.
I've already bought the USB GPS receiver & an in-car universal laptop charger, this way she can use the laptop as a GPS Navigator instead.
This is why I want the laptop to be as small as possible.

The only thing left is to decide which netbook to buy & a laptop in-car holder so that she doesn't have to hold the laptop and the laptop won't fall down while she's driving.

Garmin Mobile® PC works at uber fast speed on my old 5 years old sempron laptop.

I dono the limit, but i plugged in my 4gb card, apart from "use the card" and set the amount as your choice, there's another option that says "dedicate this device". I chose dedicate, and they took up the whole 3.7gb available.

It depends on how fast is your SD card and how big is the capacity.
If it's only 2GB Class 2 ~ 4GB Class 4, you won't feel much differences.
Want the best performance, use a 4GB Class 10. Though the price will shock you.

Readyboost is originally made for Laptops / notebooks / UMPC / netbooks. Because there's very little room for upgrade on these portable computers.
Yes you can use it for PC but for what? Just upgrade your PC lar. PC is made for upgrades, that's why people don't use readyboost for PC.

Power up the netbook and immediately start pressing F10 repeatedly through the boot up (once a second will do).
If you see the Windows logo you missed the bios.
Shut down and repeat.

You can't adjust C:\ partition because it's being used for Windows.
If you want to adjust partition C:\, you'll have to start from the beginning: Windows Installation AKA Format.

Heard of wubi , google for it , download. You can install ubuntu and keep windows. Dont like ubuntu , simply remove it from windows. You still preserve your MBR , recovery partition and everything else.

Easier this way rather then you going through a complicated method

I used GParted live CD (but not on the Mini 110).
Can shrink and create new partition in freed-up space.
Be careful though Windows may not boot afterwards.
If so use the Windows Emergency Repair Disc, downloadable for free 32bit or 64 bit version (have not tried this my self yet)

Like I say, all the drivers in the netbook is in the C:\SwSetup

and yes, when you clean format, you are not able to use the F11 recovery already, so you will need to make a DVD backup of the recovery which the netbook allows you to.

@fcuk90: I got a grub2 error, the infamous sh:grub error. FUUUUUUUUUU- now reinstalling

Added on July 26, 2010, 1:06 amAfter some googling, https://launchpad.net/~markus-tisoft/+archi...u0~ppa1_all.deb

I found out the way to use the RT3090 on HP Mini 110 for Ubuntu.

Open your terminal and key in the following

as root (or sudo before each line):
mkdir -p /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/
touch /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat
service network-manager restart

What is the password for su btw?

Uh you are suppose to have an external DVD drive IIRC.

Anyway yes it is necessary to back up the recovery before you attempt to modify the partition. Incase you screw up something, you still get to have the DVD backup.

i have few questions here:

I have 110-3004TU. Just received last week.

1. Worse ??? yes..... 210 got GPS, 110 dont have. How about that ?! (still trying to confirm the GPS hardware availability in 110 coz got no place to insert sim card)

2. Not possible, if i'm not mistaken. Max 2GB since got only 1 slot. No need to upgrade - since I running Windows 7 ultimate super smooth !!! It will automatically reduce memory usage to around 500mb. Windows 7 is super efficient !

3. No need. The netbook does not overheat ... at all.

4. Answered many time already ..... HP cannot update their system for some reason, YOUR WARARNTY IS TWO YEARS REGARDLESS OF WHAT HP WEBSITE SAYS.

5. Feel free to do that. :-)

6. I personally use MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and its GOOD. Kaspersky is bulky and slows u down, dont you think?

7. No. The netbook is super quiet. Go to service center to check the noise. U in Melaka ? Coz I going tomorrow to service center to check out WiFi lagging issues.

8. Mine is less that 40*C (maintained) at High Performance using a/c power. your reading of 50*C *maybe* got some cooling problem ? I cannot say for sure.

I found out the way to use the RT3090 on HP Mini 110 for Ubuntu.

Open your terminal and key in the following

as root (or sudo before each line):
mkdir -p /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/
touch /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat
service network-manager restart

What is the password for su btw?

Use your desktop DVD writer with a USB-IDE adapter cable.
It comes with wall power adapter to power your DVD-writer.

No need to touch D drive. Don't rename to other letter also.
I think there is earlier post on how to save your F11 recovery function for new reformat and reinstallation.
Also google on the same subject.
You aren't the first to face this problem.

ok, now lets make the problem become simpler...

since I dun have external DVD drive, can I backup the "Recovery" into 4GB Thumbdrive, or external (USB) HDD ?? hmm.gif
Then, I only Copy the "Recovery" from the Thumbdrive or ext HDD to my Desktop PC, then only Burn to a DVD ? hmm.gif

can I ? wink.gif

You need to preserve the MBR. Otherwise its useless , you need to copy few things. Get Norton ghost , see if you can copy. If you're a cheap bastard like me , dd should do the trick. Whats dd you ask , well google for it.

Windows 7 starter cannot be obtained. Its meant for OEM , basically if you remove it you are not able to "restore" your netbook the way how it was. Thats all

You should get Acronis Partition tool

That kind of technology is only possible with MacOS X. I am not sure if there is a tool in windows which does that

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1131

Try to search for Virtual Burner windows

Anyway found one

http://www.noteburner.com/

This allows you to burn virtually , which should give you an iso format , transfer it to your desktop and burn it

No need install, just key in those commands in the terminal. By the way, you need to sudo everytime.

The sound I can't still get it to work ._. One more thing, when you update, don't ever update your GRUB. Whenever it ask to update grub, don't.

Don't even select it to update.

You are going to lose your GRUB.

Ah thats the limitation of MBR/BIOS

MBR only allows up to 4 , EFI (found on Macs and newer BIOSes/PCs) can do a lot

Basically you gotta reformat it. Primary partitions are partitions whereby the system is able to boot. It will get very complicated if I go in depth. If you want to know the reason why you can't , its because of MBR , it only allows up to 4. So you have all 4. You cannot make primary partitions.

Whats the command

@win7 - Sorry , thats how it works. Thats why we have GPT. Sadly only OS that takes advantage (well two) are linux and umm OSX . Windows fails to see GPT (unless you're talking bout server/enterprise edition) . GPT allows you to dynamically resize and make new partitions from free space. You are not limited to 4 primary partitions. That means you can have like 15 OSes installed on one HDD !

^

mkdir -p /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/
touch /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat
service network-manager restart

These 3 lines work for me. Just add in sudo in front of these lines will do.

Now I am concentrating on how to get ALSA to work. Already reinstalled Ubuntu 3 times rofl.

That means you can have like 15 OSes installed on one HDD !

master Prasys, how about I let the Windows Disk Management to convert it to become Dynamic Disk, then later I manually convert it (Dynamic) back to BASIC ? hmm.gif

^ Not needed.

The drivers are in it, except that it is somehow not activated. So those commands will do, and also, I posted up a link to get the ALSA updated for 10.04 Lucid. So that the sound can be used.

^ Since its all related to the HP Mini 110 troubleshooting, why not?

What other good topic you could suggest to talk in here? There's not much topic to talk about. So when this Ubuntu talk is down, there's a new topic by then.

We are all sticking to this thread by posting relevant talk on how Ubuntu fares up with the HP Mini 110.

Do you know how to use Hp Navigator ? they provide service similar to GPS, but using wireless technology. Skyhook wireless XPS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyhook_Wireless HP provide Navigator software but it comes with 30 days trail if accept it to use. Thinking of the wireless technology, I dont think this technology is available in Malaysia ?
Have you all tested this software Hp Navigator ?

Guys..how come the battery icon in the taskbar does not show the estimated battery life remaining in terms of time..mine only shows a percentage..i notice that certain laptops will show how many minutes remaining..

is this a limitation of windows 7 starter edition?

It takes a while for the battery to get data on how long would it last. Few calibrations and I've seen it kinda common on certain HP laptops.

I think it works well with ubuntu , ubuntu should give how long the battery lasts.

Ok it seem like i cant find how to fill the form like the first time it show but the warranty check has respond and not unknown but expired on 2011-07-22. So our warranty is 1 year?

And i find the product information and it show serial no, product no and region is MY. Seem like it auto detect. If in my case perhaps maybe i want to send to warranty does they concern for my personal info that i didnt register, or they just need my product no and my serial no?

Clearly he knows little or nothing at all. little knowledge is dangerous

Anyway you have have 2 Windows. You can choose not to see the other partition in the system. As long as the system does not mount or assign a letter to other windows partition. You should be good to go , aka windows 1 cant see windows 2 , so on and so forth

Mean if there's problem, just go to the HP service center, they ask you what is your problem, tell them the problem, give them your netbook, and then they will inform you when it is ready after they service it.

ok thanks.

To speed up a bit the netbook what should i do?
1. Upgrade Ram
2. Use Ready Boost
3. Uninstall HP Program <- if disable it from startup do the same?

Using Upgrade windows anytime from Window 7 starter to Window 7 Ultimate is this will effect the speed? Will there any function dissapear? Can someone confirm?

Don't disable HP Support assistant, that's like the most important HP programs compare to others, and yeah, you can uninstall things like HP Quick sync, Clouddrive, navigator and etc.

And no, for me the speed is the same, and THERE WON'T BE FUNCTION DISAPPEAR. *How can there be anyway? lol* You get lots more useful function.

The steps are bit complicated , kinda hard for me to post one by one when i am on Windows 7 right now on my mac. I'll hop back to a PC , its because the mac uses a GPT style whereby all my partitions are primary

Hi peeps. Just got my hp mini from tmnet. Have a few questions: My battery bar just shows how much % left for my battery. How do I adjust it in a way such that I can know how long can the battery last? Next, whenever I on my computer, it will straightaway boot to the HpMediaSuit. How do I set it in such a way that when I on my netbook, it'll straightaway boot into win7? Thx!

We don't know how to adjust time remaining info for the battery.

And to set the HP Quick web, you need to go to Control Panel > HP Quick Web settings.

Use that if you want to know the time. Its common among HP laptops. Some of them would refuse to display the time.

Thanks for all your help!^^ Btw, does anyone of you encounter problems when using msn? This is actually my first time using win7, and yet I can't sign in my msn. It keeps displaying "Your contact list cannot be loaded bla bla..." something like that. I checked my firewall, followed all the solutions guide posted on the web, but it still did not solve the problem. Anyone knows the 100% work solution to it?

The correct way to do it is by using HP recovery manager to create recovery disk which may require 2 or 3 dvd. After that you can delete the recovery partition because the dvd will restore back the partition when used to recover your pc to factory state.

So, the recovery disc sill restore both the C and the Recovery partition at the same time?
In that case, what happens if you have created an extra partition?
What will happen to it?

guys, what Anti-Virus is the best for the Netbook? hmm.gif

Light & quite powerful enough  biggrin.gif

for free version i'd prefer avast.it has small sized updates and it doesnt need specific time to update like Avira do.

as for AVG, well, i don't have much trust in it since 5 years ago.

For future owners reference,All Atom based netbook will only support 2GB RAM maximum. This is the limitation that comes with the Intel 945 chipset.

Future chipset may support larger amount of RAM.

I think go and warranty your laptop. Apparently, by just plugging the VGA into the VGA output of the netbook, it will automatically detect the VGA wire being plugged in. Test 99 before warranty it.

You can try asking how much to replace the 3 cell battery with this seller.
Basically what he'll do is strip your original battery from the battery casing & replaced it with new batteries.
Much cheaper, good workmanship, quality product & got warranty too.
You can ask upgrade to 6 cell battery too if your battery casing can fit 6 batteries.

I don't care. It shorten by a bit only as long as you don't expose the battery to extreme heat. Which means laptop overheating

Tried, it sucks! No way you can fix the sound issue, maybe I am just new to Linux... But I fixed the sound problem in Ubuntu Netbook Edition.

Now the only problem in my netbook with Ubuntu is the bluetooth, Ubuntu seems to detech my bluetooth but I cannot scan any device sad.gif

There is this problem that after you install Linux, in my case Ubuntu and Jolicloud, then the netbook will have no sounds coming out from the speaker, but if using earphone no problem.

The solution is to update your ALSA driver to the latest one, easy peasy. But the update does not works on Jolicloud because of missing kernel source or something like that.

I am not sure about this, in fact when I installed it was version 0.9 or something, not 1.0. Anyway, the main reason I switch to Ubuntu is because it has more support compare to Jolicloud, you can easily find solution for Ubuntu. thumbup.gif

Yes in higher RPM. Well, the 110 is newer supposely for the lower end netbook but the new 210 is releasing soon.
