iOS4.0.2 is ready for download now. Updating as we speak. Changelog mentions fixing the malicious PDF hole used to jailbreak iPhones on previous version.

Any phone if drop could have it's screen damaged . it doesn't matter how serious shattered the screen is. Even a slight crack will drive you crazy. Deciding whether to buy based on this should not be a major concern. Whether the screen shatter or not also depend on how you drop it and the surface.
If one chance of dropping phone is high, OMG better get those rugged industrial types like HP models but with lousy slow and outdated windows 5 |

Have searched the first few pages of iPhone forum threads and there's none of a specific thread on sharing everyday use of iPhones by users. I would not like to try the courage to open a new thread too so have decided to share it here then maybe some others could share theirs too.
I have been an iPhone user starting from the day Maxis launched its 3GS last year. I bought it with no contract because I was a student studying in Singapore so I do not need the Maxis plan. However, I did not sign up any data plan to accompany my 3GS here in Singapore. The reason being that I stayed in hostel and there's wifi everywhere in the uni therefore I did not use 3G data with my iPhone. I have lived without a data plan with my 3GS for a year. Right till I recently got my iPhone 4 from a Singapore telco and I have decided to sign a data plan to accompany my iPhone 4. I know that it will be a total new way of using the iPhone with a data plan compared to my one-year experience without the data plan. The first thing that came to my mind is app like SGBuses that can check the bus arrival time using 3G. Also, app like Buuuk that can check restaurants or places with food nearby wherever I am at a particular time. Although I have been an iPhone user for quite some time but I feel like I'm a fresh iPhone user again with this brand new experience (which is already not new for almost all iPhone users out there). My previous iPhone experience was based on apps like daily expenses tracking (iXpenselt), todo app (NotifyMe2), some photography apps and majority else are games. Now, with a data plan with my iPhone 4, I am starting to look for apps beside games that normally you can use outdoor either on bus or mrt. I also recently downloaded the SoundHound app that lets me detect a song that is playing around me using 3G which I can almost say I can't do it without a data plan like when I was using my 3GS. Most importantly, is the Whatsapp messenger, the app is just fantastic with the 3G data, I can now "SMS" my gf without utilizing the real SMS tied to my plan. Again, I know this is absolutely something not new anymore to iPhone users but I just want to share my "new" experience with data plan on my iPhone. Well, being experienced the way of using and iPhone without data plan and now with the data plan experience, I can say, iPhone without data plan is just not going to be utilizing the full potential of an iPhone. With all you iPhone users out there, besides sharing what are the recommended games and applications (I know there're two threads on these), I am not sure if it's worth to have a thread on how you use your iPhone in your everyday life (of coz, besides gaming, LOL)? How do you utilize your data (besides surfing on safari and facebook, of coz) on your iPhone whenever you are outdoor in a bus or mrt, or indoor at home or a shopping centre. Well, am not sure if these do cover in the "recommended games/applications" threads but what I'm trying to encourage users to share here is how one utilizes the iPhone or a particular useful app in your daily life. Very sorry for the lengthy post but I'm hoping that from users sharing, the forum can be more interesting and also, more specific (with user experience) recommendation can be done on apps/usage. I will continue to share my experience as soon as I find something new and interesting (which I've never experienced before without the data plan) on my iPhone. Just my sharing... P/S: If moderators feel that this post is not related or violate the forum rules, kindly feel free to delete it.. |

Good question. Let me list mine. 1 - Foursquare. I let folks that I trust, know where I am. It is a social networking app where it allows you to check-in to places and claim virtual ownership in the form of a "Mayor" when you have "checked-in" at a particular place often enough. This is how I found out where my close friends are and 4 times already met up with them because they are in the vicinity. Foursquare also merit badges to unique check-ins like checking in into Starbucks, you unlock the "Barista" badge, at 5 different airports, you get the "JetSetter" badge, etc. CNN took part in this during the World Cup event by providing exclusive badges when you check in at match venues. In US and Australia, they've taken this to the next step by awarding free coffee(Starbucks) or lunch(Wagamama) should you check in and maintain your "Mayorship" at the place. It encourages folks to come out and visit these places. 2 - Twitter. You use Whatsapp, I use Twitter. It's the SMS of the Internet. Tie your Foursquare with Twitter, and your location is autotweeted when you check-in. 3 - Pulse Mini. I read news. Tech news. To keep up with the goings-on. I subscribe to them because tech news don't lie like political propagandas on Malaysiakini or its other equivalent (I hate politics). Pulse allows me to read them in one centralised place. I also have its big brother equivalent on the iPad. 4 - Layar. It takes social networking, location positioning and pasted them onto your live camera view to allow different interactions depending on what layer (hence, Layar?) you turned on. Tweets nearby? Turn the Tweet layer on, turn around until you face those tweets and read. Search for the closest MRT/LRT station by simply turning and facing the direction indicated on the camera view. Best foods, restaurants, bar, nightlife, it all comes to life depending on how detailed the switched-on superimposed layers are. Those are what I can think of right now. I'm huge on Foursquare and Twitter, but I suggest being careful on who you allow to follow you on them. |

First of all, I follow lowyat forum AppleBite section quite often, and I really much appreciate for all the posts that you have contributed and honestly I would say you're the most "Apple-guy" I can see in this forum. BTW, return to the topic, haha: 1. I've tried on Foursquare here in Singapore and everytime I search the place where I was at that time, I can only see one particular Mayor in that place and no one else in the list.. I'm not too sure how ppl can add me as friends if I check into that place, or vice versa, how I add people checked into the place? 2. Nice sharing on Twitter, actually I'm kind of keen to enter the twitter-sphere too. Been wandering around for some time and still yet to figure out what sort of things/people to follow, maybe because almost nobody whom I know uses Twitter.. LOL 3. Opps, I forgot to mention in my last post too about this.. I do read tech news daily too (BTW, I agree with your point that tech news don't lie like politics, haha).. I used the Reeder app on my iPad to follow all the tech news on my Google Reader account, honestly, I love the simple interface of it and I am seriously considering to buy the iPhone version of Reeder. I think it will is worthy especially since now I have the data plan with me, which means I can browse the news wherever I am.. 4. I have heard of the Layar app quite some time ago, just that during my 3GS days it's kind of useless without 3G on-board.. so is Layar by far one of the best "augmented-reality" app? (Am I right that it actually is an augmented reality app?) The Buuuk app that I mentioned in my last post is somehow similar to Layar in searching for restaurants BUT, the augmented reality function of it is kind of lousy and not accurate, as far as I find out about the app.. haha.. My sharing.. |
