QUOTE(Andy214 @ Jul 1 2010, 12:29 PM)
Talk about smartphone capabilities, any smartphone is better than iOS4.
But when talk about graphics, animations, smoothness, responsiveness, iOS4 wins hands down. This has been a trend for Apple products. Windows until today, cannot even come close to Mac OS in terms of graphics, response, smoothness, etc.
It's just different target product, cannot compare.

"Apple's mobile OS is specifically created for those customers that want a simple, lightweight operating system that makes them more productive while on-the-go, or while sitting on the couch flipping through pictures on an iPad. The biggest problem with iOS 4 is that it only runs on Apple devices. "

There's something wrong from above statement from the website which shows the reviewer has failed.
SIMPLE and LIGHTWEIGHT, YES..... BUT, that doesn't mean you have to remove the advance features. Simple.
A good product should be simple and lightweight BUT AT THE SAME TIME, allow options for advance users to unleashed it capabilities.
iOS4 are simply a SIMPLE, STRAIGHTFORWARD, LIGTHWEIGHT OS that only can do "so much" and there's no option for even intermediate features. It's fully "LOCKED DOWN".
In any (if not all OS), we can turn on/off advanced features, e.g. Windows. BUT iOS4 simply is FACTORY LOCK, sorry, it's only for SIMPLE users.
Many fanboys failed to understand it and continue to support blindly or say how good is the product; Well, YES, in terms of graphics, animation, smoothness; BUT it's a failure as a smartphone, it's nothing like a computer to me, it feels like a SIMPLE gaming/entertainment device; not something I would like to use as a mobile computer, it's nothing like it at all.
Trouble is, there's already Symbian for "normal" Customers, and there're so many... like Android, Apple iOS, Windows Mobile, etc.

If they stop Maemo, is there any replacement that is good enough to replace it?
*
i dont consider the iPhone to be a smartphone, or the iOS3/4 to be a smart OS. its just a flashy phone with flashy apps that tries very hard to be a status symbol / fashion statement.

check out new app, FAPMAN.

in extras-devel i think.

dont let your imagination run wild, it stands for Fast App Manager

promises to be much faster than the default appman in PR 1.2

@hbau

I think it's better if you remove the download link.
I encourage people to buy this game if you guys want it.The developer of this game already said that future of maemo games release depends on sales amount of Zen Bound & SPiN.
The project leader said as long as they break even with this games sales they'll countinue porting games for maemo.

All you guys have pay for this game is only RM8.Equivalent of 1 McD lunch only laugh.gif
*
imho, if you want to play portable games, get psp or nds. nokia never said n900 was a gaming phone. they never demoed it with games, n8 is another story, i would be pissed off if n8 didnt have developers making games for it. but symbian has always been one of the game developers favorite because of the huge worldwide market that each symbian phone captures.

come on guys, we have a niche product. so we have to live with it, with niche apps and niche games for it...

blank desktop wallpaper. its only bytes in size, not even 1Kb.

1.) drop in in your .images folder

2.) install transition control from extras-devel and disable all transitions

3.) apps and widgets launch and close almost immediately, blazing fast = no eye candy at all.

4.) this wallpaper will take least amount of memory, u cant go any lesser.

The new features: iPhone4

Facetime - why is it so hard to get front camera to support video calls ? Apple said phones from other manufacturers will support facetime in the future because its open technology ? since when apple play nice. so they want other manufacturers to ditch 3G video calls and use facetime. yeah right.

5 MP camera, LED flash, Backside Illumination Sensor. the new iPhone4 has 5 megapixel with big sensor ? and with LED flash ? and backside illumination technology. better low light photography with all these ? all these bring back fond memories of 2008 and other manufacturers who had similar specced phones... digging back in history, nokia n82 with the xenon flash. maybe they will launch xenon flash with iPhone7 and call it ground-breaking technology...

Retina what ? and they can claim IPS LCD of theirs is better than AMOLED ? IPS has been around for a long time in LCD monitors and some LCD TVs. AMOLED is the new thing.

iPhone reinvented mobile gaming with the accelerometer. I have nothing to say. We have never seen or heard about accelerometer before iPhone. Its like teleportation and T-1000.

i have uninstall it..maybe try it again next time

oh... you cant do that. make sure you have all repositories enabled. it will pull necessary libs. you can't just install phytonQT and expect it to work, there might be more libs needed.

a few pages back there was a list of repository...

here you go.

Added on July 4, 2010, 2:16 ammake sure all these repositories are enabled. if you cant find any one, then add manually. then after u add all, refresh the catalogues if it doesnt do it automatically. now you would be able to install transition control, and it would be able to pull necessary files.

and make sure you are on PR1.2

hey guys~bluetooth mouse is working on N900~ rclxms.gif
link is here
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=57427

video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaNz4uM-29Q

but i donno hw to start do this --..-- sad.... feel quite complicated sad.gif
*
its not complicated. get used to your device first. learn how to use commands in the xterm.

once you are used to your device and how a linux OS works and what are the components of the OS, and learn what key folders and files you will need to access, you will be more comfortable.

you will need root before you try this, and as the warning on the page says. you might render both the keyboard and the touch capability of your device useless. root is like getting full administrator access in windows.

so get used to WinSCP at least. WinSCP lets you access your n900 "system files" from a windows machine and restore any changes made without the need to re-flash.

anyway, learn how to re-flash as well, you might need to re-flash if you experiment with these kind of stuff. be prepared to loose all your settings and data. so always keep backup of it.

this device is made for people willing to experiment. so if you are willing, dont complain if something goes wrong and you have to start all over again.

and finally, dont worry as well, no permanent hardware damage. unless of course you try something more extreme like overclocking and push it all the way and burn the device (has not happened to anyone yet).

1) working commands in n900

http://www.artm-friends.at/blogrm/?page_id=311

2) some basic and generic commands. mostly should work.

http://freeengineer.org/learnUNIXin10minutes.html

3) more basic commands

http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/commands.htm

4) n900 uses busybox specifically, here is a long list. not all commands work on the n900 though... (warning, long list)

http://busybox.net/downloads/BusyBox.html

Added on July 4, 2010, 5:50 amall the help pages above are from google, use if more often.

Added on July 4, 2010, 5:55 amand you can type "busybox" without the quotes in your xterm to list embedded commands in the busybox version on your n900.

Added on July 4, 2010, 6:02 amPermissions

On your Linux filesystem, different people ‘own’ different folders and files and have the right to grant or deny other people permission to read and write to the files they own.

The super-administrator, root (not to be confused with the root filesystem / or root’s home folder /root) has access to every file regardless of its owner or permissions. This is why you should never run as root – it’s so easy to make a mistake that would bring down your whole system.

A lot of the files in Linux are owned, controlled and locked down by root. This includes important system files, folders and programs etc. You won’t be able to edit or delete these files yourself, without first logging on as root (be very careful).

For the files that you own (generally, stuff in your home folder), you can control permissions (you can prevent other users, but not root, from reading or writing to your data). By default, most distributions set your home folder to be readable by others, but not writable by others. It’s out of the scope of this tutorial to go into changing it, but if you’re interested, investigate the command chmod (or look at your file manager, it should be able to change permissions graphically).

Common Folders

I hope you have a fairly good understanding now of how the file system basically works, so now I’m going to iterate through some of the common folders you find on a Linux system, and what they’re for.

Name Purpose

/ The root folder, where everything starts, and everything is contained in this folder (or under subfolders of this folder).

/bin Contains system-critical programs (binaries)

/boot Contains files needed for booting (be careful!)

/dev Contains files which can be used to directly access your hardware (files to manipulate all your hard drives etc)

/etc Contains mainly configuration files for various programs/system stuff.

/home Contains a folder for each user (except root) where they can store their personal files.

/lib A folder for system-critical libraries.

/root The home folder for root – the super-administrator (generally will be locked to normal users so you can’t take a peek).

/media Contains folders for the media attached to your system (CDs, DVDs and USB sticks etc)

/opt Optional software – like desktop environments etc.

/proc A system folder, it’s a bit scary so I won’t go into it!

/sbin Contains essential programs only designed to be run by root.

/tmp Temporary files, deleted every restart.

/usr Stands for Unix System Resources (not user as is commonly said). Contains lots of stuff, so I’ll look into it below.

/usr/bin Contains virtually every single program you use.

/usr/lib Contains virtually every system library that programs require to run.

/usr/local Contains programs that you have manually compiled rather than installed from a package.

/usr/sbin Contains virtually every program designed to be run by the super-administrator, root.

I really hope this will be merged with Meego OS. It would be a waste for this promising operating system to go down the drain.

nokia not going to do that... maemo 5 is maemo 5. maemo 6 is cross breeding with meego. and we are not getting maemo 6 / meego officially.

but lets hope NiTDroid matures... at least we can have dual boot fun, even for just one hour. damn.

iPad was never meant to have flash at all. n900 was demoed with flash 10.1 in front of a public audience.

i dont see logic in this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mad11TrKQXM

hope this matures fast. they are demoing froyo & flash 10 on a non-OCed stock 600mhz. my guess is its because flash 10 is using the GPU... and the CPU is still free..

flash 9.4 on our n900 bogs down the processor at 100% and sucks battery life, all the while the GPU sleeping peacefully and at intervals doing mundane things like accelerating the GUI and displaying the silly animations while minimizing and maximizing windows (if hildon is capable of using the GPU)

Added on July 5, 2010, 1:24 amhttp://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=49811

they are onto froyo 2.2 now. its never going to get stable because as soon as google releases new code, the boys are porting the new code again.

its never going to end, and we are never going to get anything near "stable" with android on n900.

now is the time i say. lets get android on our n900. even battery reporting is working in the latest build. once they get the GSM/3G module working then its fine-tuning from then onwards.

Added on July 5, 2010, 1:27 am cry.gif doh.gif

just remembered... sold off my microSD with my 5800xm... keep forgetting to buy a microSD.

anyway, just another tip. since our n900 has almost 27GB usable space in eMMC. putting a microSD (esp. the high speed ones) will draw some power continuously) so now you know why i prefer not to use a microSD with my n900.

when the background processes are indexing files, it will index the microSD card contents as well, and as long as the indexing process accesses the card, power is consumed.

Added on July 5, 2010, 1:44 ami have a feeling that the release of neopwn2/backtrack mobile will create a second wave for n900. imagine all the wannabes who would go and purchase n900 for that purpose and ask dumb questions in "Nokia N900 Thread V4".

i can see it coming.
