I might try to compile this next week.

If you want you can try it yourself. All the instructions are here : http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=757
This is genuine working steps.

I purposely bought processor without VT so I'm won't be spending too much on VMware/Linux.But now really starting to regret it...

I present to you : Instinctiv
Music file player.Working ok.But further update such as auto rotate & equalizer needed.

Link : http://store.ovi.com/content/43941

I present to you : Numpty Physics

Yes.This may looks like stupid children game. But you need to apply some real physic in order to complete the task.
You may need to use the physical keyboard to skip games or quit.

Get this from Extras-Devel repository

I want to ask about ApMeFo again

user posted image

Anyone know how to move the phone shortcut to phone folder?I can only move 1 shortcut.
*
if i am not mistaken the appmefo edits the hildon resource file. somehow it has created extra icons / shortcuts. maybe not really valid ones so you cant move it. i would suggest manually opening up the file and look for duplicate entries...

Added on July 6, 2010, 5:56 pmthe path to the hildon.menu that apmefo uses...

To clear this misunderstanding.

AP = Original

Zitron = Authorised

So, whether you get from AP set or Authorised set, both are ORIGINAL.

What is AP set? AP set means it is OVERSEA set.
Authorised Set means it's OFFICIAL SET to be sold by in Malaysia by OFFICIAL DISTRIBUTOR, in this case, Zitron.

So, why cannot update? AP set for N900 are usually US Set. Are you saying US people cannot update themselves? LoL
They have to send back to Malaysia AP dealer and ask the shop to update for them? WOW~~

The use of Ori is confusing. It's all ORIGINAL, unless it is some fake China NokLa...

Just like you buy Sony PSP, PS3, etc. You can buy from Sony Malaysia = Authorised/Official Malaysian Set.
Or you can buy from Game Shop, which the unit may be from different countries.
*
n900 does not use the product code thingy to determine region. you can update whatever you want for whatever product code. no messing around with JAF or NSS to change product code...

if you cannot flash, 3 things possible.

1) you are doing something wrong

2) incorrect image or flasher or unsupported OS on your computer that you are using to flash.

3) you have a faulty n900 / faulty cable.

Flash 10.1 uses GPU acceleration.
I don't see any reason why 600MHz & Flash 10.1 to work ok.

Froyo still lagging because N900's graphic accelerator still imperfect with it.Give it some time.
Deactivating ApMeFo will rearrange your apps.Check your apps icon at the bottom of the menu.I tried activating & deactivating bunch of times already.Nothing happened to me.
froyo should be able to detect the gpu. i am sure there will be other omap based phones with exactly the same config like n900. and since froyo is an open system, designed like meego to run on multiple machines, it should naturally be able to pickup the n900's gpu.

we are most likely just weeks away from gpu accelerated froyo on n900.

Added on July 6, 2010, 8:20 pmn900 is not suitable as a tablet-phone with 1320 mah battery. what was nokia thinking.

they should have used a thicker battery, at least 2500mah. since its a tablet, and since n800 was huge, i would not mind a thicker n900. it would be still pocketable with a slightly thicker battery. better than carrying two phones.

when you are using as a phone, the gsm module sucks the battery slowly. when you want to use it for internet / other tablet functions only left with 1-2 bars.

now using the n900 as a pure tablet only, no sim card. the battery just stays at the same level when standy. and always ready for use when you need it.

Froyo on n900 without GPU acceleration. This is why you want to wait till they get GPU acceleration working.

Also i think Froyo would perform better if its natively installed on the n900 rather than dual boot from a microSD

A few UK online shops have it, but they're either out of stock or extremely overpriced (I mean, I want to get s resin case BECAUSE it's cheaper than an Otterbox).

Join me and wrap your N900 in memerang skin... brows.gif

Anyway, the lack of wonderous apps aside (which now that I think of it, the only real ones I need actually is Garmin/Navit, a proper finance app, a decent native image editor (GIMP is blardy slow) bluetooth remote ala SailingClicker and DocsToGo with PDF and Powerpoint), I think the N900 is settling down to be my primary device quite well nowadays.

Considering I installed a tonne of apps I NEVER used on Symbian, though I do miss a few.

My N900 is getting to be quite stable lately, and well personalized due to all my mods. Though better battery life and decent portrait support wouldn't hurt, which I hope (fruitlessly I know) PR1.3 will bring to the table.

time to reflash my n900, there are leftover junk everywhere from previously uninstalled apps...

i can see icons from previously uninstalled apps popping up everywhere... and it disappears in a blink when the system refreshes...

either the built in appman or fapman is not removing all files/links/libs/icons when apps being uninstalled...

and apt-get is uninstalling libs are still needed... something wrong with dependencies data... maybe corrupted...

many shops dont know this is a tablet, they thought its a new version of s40 or s60. and when they are not used to it, and scared they wont be able to advice customer accordingly or answer questions like how to set up mms. so they rather badmouth it and not sell it, and try to promote other phones that they are used to selling...

if only we had better educated hand phone shop dealers. even the branch manager of a certain nokia shop/zitron/avaxx does not know what OS this phone is running when i tried to check with him, just to test how much he knows. (i dont want to give out names / branch) they just say new "version" from nokia. its all they can and will say. some say "like a computer" while some say "hard to use".

maybe nokia malaysia should have training for them. you can't expect much from them without product training.

imagine if proton comes out with a "flying car" based on advanced nuclear fission technology next month. do you think our local salesman would be able to explain to customer how it works or even sell it ? how do you sell something you cant explain. most will try to avoid it altogether.

also remember to look for scars on the phone, dents or cracked plastics. make sure the slider mechanism is smooth as well.

it just shows a message that says unable to play media, doesn't crash or nothing. mp3 still plays fine, and videos recorded on the device itself still plays fine.

i tried it on a newly flashed device...

weird, gonna try uninstalling and reinstalling extra decoders support again to see if it works...

sh... screwed up mce.ini
keyboard light constantly on, even when keyboard closed... haha... no wonder...

and one more tips, dont leave phone in app manager screen, seems to suck battery even when not connected to anything...

got it now, keyb light goes off in 10secs. then followed by screen 30 secs

Added on July 11, 2010, 2:57 amnow keyboard light goes off in 1 second. but re-activates when screen touched.

so keeps blinking on & off when screen being used. any way to permanently turn off the keyboard ? i tried '0' values for keyboard timeout but doesnt disable it.

there should be some undocumented values for mce.ini to disable keyb light.

ok got it now... wrote a guide for it below....

Added on July 11, 2010, 5:35 am
Guide : Removing keyboard back light
--------------------------------------------

WARNING : this removes the keyboard backlight entirely. even when you type it remains dark.

This requires the following tools :

1) Rootsh (enables root access)
2) Leafpad or any other text editor

Steps
-------

1) sudo gainroot
2) cd to "/etc/mce" folder
2) leafpad mce.ini (or any other text editor, i prefer leafpad)
4) The file contents will look something like below, look for the "Modules" section

# Modules
#
# List of modules to load
# Note: the name should not include the "lib"-prefix
Modules=display;keypad;vibrator;led;battery;filter-brightness-als;inactivity;alarm;accelerometer;callstate;camera;homekey;audiorouting

5) remove the keypad from the line, make sure there is semicolon ; separating the other components.

6) the result will look somewhat like below, with the keypad entry removed

Modules=display;vibrator;led;battery;filter-brightness-als;inactivity;alarm;accelerometer;callstate;camera;homekey;audiorouting

7) save and exit

8) "killall mce" to restart mce or reboot your device.

9) now your keyboard is backlightless.

10) should be able to squeeze more juice from the battery if you like to surf the net with the keyboard open like me...

11) to revert simply reverse the steps, open up the file in text editor > add "keypad" in the Modules section > save and exit > killall mce

PS : original mce.ini attached in case you screw something up. rename the file from mce.ini.txt to mce.ini

oo thanks for the info, will N900 support flash 10 in the future? and izit good to overclock N900 to 800MHZ?
*
take it slow if ur scared... even at 700mhz u can feel the tablet snappier when opening and closing apps... brows.gif

Nokia launched the 5800 express music phone with the CPU running at 369MHz. and from V20 firmware onwards the CPU ran at 434MHz. notworthy.gif

what we can learn from this is that nokia always clocks their phone at minimal levels, even lower than the manufacturer recommended. doh.gif doh.gif

other manufacturers like to show off higher clock speed, but nokia always goes for one step below what the manufacturer rates the chip. maybe they dont like to show off ? doh.gif

for example you buy a HP desktop with Core i5 processor, rated at 2.6Ghz by Intel(meaning on the box its stated Core i5 - 2.6Ghz), but HP clocks it down to 2.0Ghz and sells it to you.

of course you can overlock it to 2.6Ghz and it would run just fine because it was made to run at that speed.

for the processor in our n900, the speed is not locked by the chipmaker, but some other phones from other manufacturers is running the same processor in their phones at 800Mhz++ as the default maximum speed.

so common sense tells that 800Mz is still safe for n900, correct me if i am wrong. hmm.gif

just that with 800Mhz, the battery will run out faster, thats all. because nokia forgot to put in a bigger battery shakehead.gif

with newer firmware from nokia for n900 (PR 1.3 anyone ?) that has better power management, nokia might push it higher to 700Mhz maybe... like they did for 5800 express music.

with the correct battery and power management by the OS, you might even have better battery life at higher Mhz. hmm.gif

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

that said, there are 2 methods to OC

titan's kernel and lehto's kernel.

1) titan's kernel has varying speeds, and if something goes wrong and your phone reboots, it resets to default settings. you can uninstall it and revert to original as well. it has many speed options to play with. from a safe 700mhz to a crazy 1150mhz.

2) lehto's kernel has fixed max Mhz options, you have to re-flash each time you want a new setting, but its flash once and forget. you wont notice any changes were made, except for the faster speed

for beginners i would highly suggest titan's kernel = easier to install and easier to reset to default if you are not satisfied / not stable. but as far as i know, 95% of the phones should be rock solid with 700Mhz max clockspeed.

but even if you dont overclock, you are not losing out much. it does not enable some new functions or unlock secret levels in the phone, its still the same phone.
it only makes a big difference for people who run emulators like PSX emulator.

dont expect the n900 to perform like a Core i5 desktop machine after overlocking.... sweat.gif sweat.gif

QUOTE(Eiraku @ Jul 11 2010, 11:31 PM)
Well, depending on what you want, the N900 can be heaven sent or hell bound.

And lets not beat around the bushes, as of now, THE MAIN PARTS OF THE OS is in landscape mode only, besides the browser, some other third party apps and the phone app.

While ctrl-shift-r (and the shortcutd hack that runs this) allows for rotation, in the end it's still a hack and things might not work as expected. IE, the SMS view is cut off, menus are not shown well (or not shown at all).

Alsp, the keyboard will not work in portrait unless you install other apps or hacks.

So, the short answer is, as long as you're willing to hack and play around with your N900 and accept the risks that comes with it, it will support portrait.

But than again "as long as you're willing to hack and screw around" means you can do a HECK of a lot of things with the N900, and is the main reason I and most of the other guys here love it.
*
well said...

actually running at stock speed and running at OC speed like 900mhz to 1ghz it makes alot of difference everything loads faster. So its actually not only for PSX emulator but for daily usage for me i realize its so much different
*
of cos at 900Mhz or above the phone feels like a "different beast" altogether... drool.gif i meant the 600Mhz to 700Mhz jump would be low risk and not noticeable in most cases... hmm.gif

if you are a heavy multi-tasker, for example 3-4 different browsing window, and if some of those sites are not mobile versions but full versions with flash, and with lets say music playing in the background, then even 900Mhz is not enough... brows.gif

@ meLi

to change fonts you just need to replace the ones in /opt/user/share/fonts/nokia and reboot.

there are 4 files :

nosnb.ttf
nosnr.ttf
nosns.ttf
noscnr.ttf

you need to make 4 copies of your new font and name them as above. don't forget to make a backup of your original, as some font sets don't support all characters.

our phones support all .ttf font files just like windows, and there are tons on the web. just pick a one u like, and make 4 copies, rename as above and replace in /opt/user/share/fonts/nokia and reboot.

here.s a dl link to my font:

http://www.mediafire.com/?9yrmjdybwte

and a few others, but not sure if they are complete or not.

http://www.mediafire.com/?zwtuwanhixb

http://www.mediafire.com/?juuux2zm9wv

http://www.mediafire.com/?wx1uzd9jecj

still figuring out resizing the fonts tho.
*
sudo gainroot
first cd to this folder

/usr/share/themes/yourthemename/gtk-2.0/

replace "yourthemename" with the name of your theme

if you "ls" at /usr/share/themes you will see a list of installed theme folders

in the gtk-2.0 folder you will find 2 files, gtkrc and a backup copy of gtkrc

open up gtkrc in a text editor like vi or leafpad

(make sure your are root to be able to open and edit)

look for these 2 sections in the gtkrc file

"font definitions"

"new fonts for fremantle"

increase the size by 1 point, for example if its, dont use fractions like 16.5

increase all fonts listed under these 2 sections by 1 point, save and exit

reboot your n900.

PS : if you increase more than 3 points for some fonts, it will be cut off, for example the "tail" on "g" "y" will got missing.

PS : if you look under "logical color definitions", entries there changes the font colors, use hex color codes.
