Hi,

I would like to compare surgery charges among the hospitals, but the problem is when I called up the hospitals, they always ask to come for check-up first. The thing is, I could not go to all hospitals and having check-up only to get the quotations then to compare.

Thus, I hope some of you who had gone for the surgery will be able to provide me some information:

1. Which is the best hospital (or which hospital did you go) for Cataract Removal Surgery in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor (preferably with specialist)?

2. How much is the charges for surgery (quoted from the hospital)?

P/S: If you have info on charges for Malaysian Permanent Resident and Foreigner, kindly provide it too.

Thanks.

NEW UPDATE (MAY 11, 2010: 1645HRS)

I have been getting treatment at UKM Hospital and am well-informed of my eye condition - which is definitely cataract. I do not mind about the charges as long as it is done by recognized specialist and not over-charging me, of course. My next option is to do it overseas, however I really need to know if there are good eye specialist centre here in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor. Thanks.

1) Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital in PJ or ISEC (international eye specialist center in midvalley).

2) Charges depends on intraocular lens package. Normal lens will cost u 3k+ per eye, toric lens (correct astig) up to 5k, multifocal lens up to 6.5k.

i agreed with them tat u should see them to get a proper quotation and proper check up. it may not be just cataract. a lot of times, it could be something else.

also a lot of counseling regarding type of lens and surgery involved, risk of complications...

and finally, i always believes in "good thing no cheap, cheap thing no good" ... haha

Tun Hussien Onn Eye hospital near the Armada Hotel is definitely a good choice!

My mum went there to have her eyes check-up and the doctor is really experience and well-mannered...however you might need to wait a while longer for your turn as the doctors tend to be late to work tongue.gif

The price is definitely cheaper by 35% - 40% if compare to outside eye specialist. Why pay more when you get a good service at THO eye hospital?

Cheers!

Thank you ngohieng, brian_3214 and Konichiwa.

I read in a different thread about Tun Hussien Onn Eye hospital and it sounds like a government hospital, with many patients in queue.

Does ISEC a favourite centre for eye surgery? What do you all think about this hospital?

ISEC is among the good one around. Most of the doctors are previously from government hospital. As usual, those good one will resign and join private sectors.

Government hosps are good if u r in good hands. But most of the time u cannot choose who operates on u. Waiting time is terrible. UMMC = 6 to 9 months. Most govrn hosp = 6 months. And of course the extremely crowded clinic.

hello Aveana, since you are getting the check up in HUKM. why not get it done in HUKM, At the moment HUKM is equipped with a very good biometry machine, a machine that calculates the power of you lens before deciding which power to put, It is important to to have the right calculation as wrong calculation will result to poor vision acuity after surgery. If you are concern about the quality and thrust worthy of the specialist in HUKM

ISEC is a great place to go as well, many doctors there and it comes with a premium surgery.

But if none of these suites you, you are looking at even more premium center and class one service and product, Prince Court Medical Center is the next best place to go, along Jalan Kia Peng.

In HUKM you can either look for Dr Then, Dr Mae Lyn.

In ISEC you can look for Dr Lim, Dr Chung Yee Foong, They are great doctors,

Or else go to PCMC, Prince Court Medical Center and look for either Dr Tan or Prof Muhayah,

Of course if you are looking for a great bargain, Then probably head to Klang town or Jalan Gasing. Ask the Klang people where is the best to operate cataract. they will be able to tell you.

As for the Charges you can refer to the above by NGOheing but when you need to choose a lens, please ask for Carl Zeiss Lens, they are the best you can get in Malaysia.

of course those charges by Ngo Heing are estimate, hospitals always slap patients with plenty of other charges, adding up how much i wont be able to tell you.

Hello ngohieng and sonyman,

THANKS A LOT for your information and explanation - really, really helpful. ISEC sounds good, will get in touch with them and see how it goes. wink.gif

As for HUKM and PCMC, they are hospitals and I just thought going to a centre which is specialize in eye care would be a good option.

Recently my mom went for checkup at Tun Hussein Onn Hospital. The quote is RM3.5 each eye (normal lens). Long queue to see the doc but surgery can be done on the doc's surgery day (once a week, not so long queue).

The thing is, I have a relative who did it at Pantai Hospital, and the bill was exactly RM3k. I thought Pantai is private and THONEH is semi-private, so why is THONEH more expensive? Quality-wise, both should be on par, yes?

you are having cataract? in both eyes?
say.... mind telling us how old are you? and your occupation?

For cataract surgery (eg; ECCE, SICS, PHACO), one need not go abroad, govt. hospitals have such procedure~....

although.... if you are.... you can try India, foreigners from US and European countries are coming in for various treatments here in India (eg; Medical Tourism is a booming business) not to mention direct flights via AirAsia are available.

If he is what? Having cataracts? No offense... I'm just trying to find out all options... here it is about RM3k each eye with normal CZ lens. How about India? Lens + surgery + airfare.

Here is what I meant, again:

1. He already said that he is going to have his cataract treated here in Malaysia and at the same time contemplating on having it abroad.
2. Then I said "...if you are..." as in if he is going to have the treatment abroad....

Do read the above posts again.

India, the cost will definitely be cheaper than that of Malaysia, for one eye around Rs 20,000 (around RM1.5K) per eye. There are hospitals that offer even cheaper than that here. The price may vary, but one thing for sure is that it will be cheaper than Malaysian pvt hospitals.

If you are thinking of coming here (India), you should be well prepared and do some research about the options available. (Malaysians will need VISA to enter India)

What about board and lodging? You can't fly back immediately after the operation. Overall cost may not be much cheaper.

Cataract surgery is a relatively simple operation and can be done quickly. One can have the surgery and immediately on the same day go back to Malaysia.
Post-operative follow-ups can be done in Malaysian govt. hospitals if one wish.

For the details of 'health tourism' - you will need to find the contact person in Malaysia that can arrange for it.

I don't think the surgery is very expensive. My Mom did her surgery at Lam Wah Ee Hospital years ago. Cost her about RM2000 but don't know how much it costs now.

My dad did the surgery at HUKM and we bought the lens at RM650.00 (one side). The surgery was free or need to pay some amount. I forgot. But not so expensive. Everything was under RM800 i guess.

Indeed it will be cheaper if the surgery is done in govt. hospitals. I was referring to private hospitals.
Here is something about medical tourism in India:
