Hi all,

My mom has cataract at both eyes and need to go for surgery. She went to see an eye specialist and she is allergic to the eye drops that is used to dilate her eye. The Dr has tried a few eye drops, but all of it she has allergic reactions.
Hence, we are thinking of seeking a 2nd opinion from a Dr in Tun Hussein Onn Eye Specialist. Can we choose which Dr to see in this hospital? Any of you had a good experience with the Dr in this hospital, and what's the Dr's name?

Thanks alot.

"Phaco" procedure is quick, multifocal so no need for reading glasses, less pain than dental work. Next morning can see fine already, no discomfort during recovery.

If you are willing to consider popular private clinic, Optimax in Tmn Tun is excellent. Plenty of testimonials on LYN and in office.

Like to have feedback from those who have cataract surgery on :
* lens of which brand is better
* the do's and dont's
* whether it fully restores your eye sight
* cost
* those with high short sightness or glaucoma
* any regret ?

Thanks.

Added on August 24, 2011, 7:10 pmJust sharing my recent cataract surgery operation.

Because of my high myopia, can't get the higher grade lens, nor Toric. They need to be custom made. Multifocal is not recommended for me due to the nature of retina. So got the normal lens. Pity !

Operation went well. No pain. Only concern was that night when I removed the pad to put in the eye drops, the vison was cloudy. Thought I should be able to see clear vision then. Problem was due to the medication used in the surgery and the eye needed time to recover. So for the first timer, note this and don't worry.

Next day, when the eye pad was removed, clear, bright and bluer vision ! Overall, though not perfect, the vision now is better than before the surgery. Problem in close vision and also some headache now and then. Guess that is the brain trying to get used to the 2 different visions from the 2 eyes.

Now on anti-imflammatory eye drops for about a month.

Can't believe that now I have a piece of plastic in my eye ! No floater etc. Just some glaring light if the light source is from the side. Image from the other eye now looks cloudier and more yellowish than the operated eye.

Good luck to those going for the surgery !

P/S Try this simple test to see if you have cataract (warning - this is NOT a medical test !). With a piece of white papaer infront of you, separate your 2 eyes using your hand on the nose. See the paper using your left eye, then right eye. Repeat a few times. Does the paper look yellowish ? If it does, likely that you have cataract.

I'm looking for PRIVATE eye specialist clinics/hospitals that is known for cataract operations.

My dad recently did one eye at Dr Kok (Jalan Gasing - he has a brother in Klang). Cheap, yes definitely cheaper than outside, long queue as well. But he is very dissatisfied with the doctor and staffs as they don't have much time to communicate with the patients, hence lack of customer service, and so, he is looking for other alternatives.

Other than Tun Hussein Onn, what other private clinics/hospitals for cataract surgery are recommended? And also the doctor's name please. Also rough estimate of the price they charge as well. Thanks smile.gif

You can try Advance Vision at Damansara Uptown, managed and owned by Dr. Yeoh.
One price RM2,200 per eye for cataract, no hidden charge and extra cost on the follow up, which is next day, one week and one month after the operation/previous follow up.
RM80 for first time inspection and consultation.

That area quite hard to get parking, just go early to prevent long waiting queue too in the centre.
The staffs are friendly and helpful. Dr. Yeoh is funny, able to speak in Mandarin, Cantonese and English.

What determine the operation cost is the technology and the lens used.
Advance Vision is using Phacoemulsification and AMO (Abbott Medical Optics) lens from US which is good according to my friend whose used to work in THONEH.
With Phacoemulsification the wound is much smaller, thus recovery is quicker and the chance of infection is lower.

Overall, very good service. thumbup.gif

If you need more details, just Google it or visit theirs website. smile.gif

Other than the technology and lens used mentioned by Lilliput, one can also schedule the surgery as early as same day or next day as compare to long waiting list in GH.
Although time is money, if one can afford then shouldn't be a problem. smile.gif

Not sure how true is that, heard from others.
Sometimes the surgery might be done by trainee or someone inexperienced in some hospitals.
Prior to surgery, they need to read the power of patient's eyesight too.
Inaccuracy of reading the power, might contribute to variation of results.
One may need to depends on glasses for theirs daily tasks for better vision after the surgery. sweat.gif

As a conclusion, just make sure someone is experienced, certified and qualified to do the surgery for you.
No joke/risk for your eyes. cool2.gif

GH will put you on a long waiting list. As for my dad who is 70+, he would prefer to be serviced and get good service. And he's willing to pay higher for better service.

He can always go back to the Dr Kok which charge cheaper price than other private hospitals/clinics but at the end of the day, he's not satisfied with the service he get. There are different priorities in every patient. It can be the cost of surgery, service of staff and doctors, hospital/clinic environment, convenience, or time. If you have time and is looking for cheaper service, then by all means, visit the GH. smile.gif

Hi folks, I would like to find out how does No-Blade cataract surgery provided by Vista different from a normal cataract surgery (e.g. from ISEC or Advance Vision)?

My dad just underwent cataract surgery in Vista which costed him about 8k per eye. But, when I survey more options like in ISEC, I found out that normal cataract surgery only cost 2-4K per eye.

Cheers!

I don't think there is any real difference in terms of clinical and visual outcomes after No-Blade cataract surgery versus normal cataract surgery. More important would be the experience and ability of the surgeon.

Hi Everyone - hope everyone is well. I read with interest the thread in this blog. My mum needs a second opinion on her cataract operation. We were recommended Datin Dr Teoh Su Lin, someone said she is 'the best'. Has anyone been her patient or know someone who has been? She does have a lot of experience but her name has not been mentioned at all in this thread. Good experience or bad experience with her? Would appreciate some comments. Thanks so much. Trudy.

Hi,

I would like to compare surgery charges among the hospitals, but the problem is when I called up the hospitals, they always ask to come for check-up first. The thing is, I could not go to all hospitals and having check-up only to get the quotations then to compare.

Thus, I hope some of you who had gone for the surgery will be able to provide me some information:

1. Which is the best hospital (or which hospital did you go) for Cataract Removal Surgery in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor (preferably with specialist)?

2. How much is the charges for surgery (quoted from the hospital)?

P/S: If you have info on charges for Malaysian Permanent Resident and Foreigner, kindly provide it too.

Thanks.
NEW UPDATE (MAY 11, 2010: 1645HRS)

I have been getting treatment at UKM Hospital and am well-informed of my eye condition - which is definitely cataract. I do not mind about the charges as long as it is done by recognized specialist and not over-charging me, of course. My next option is to do it overseas, however I really need to know if there are good eye specialist centre here in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor. Thanks.

Datin dr teoh in SJMC? She will scold the patient if he or she doesnt follow her instruction to take care of the eyes. Overall, she is good but always packed with patients and must wait a long long time during follow up.

If your mum has both cataract and retinal problem, then see dr Ula in SJMC because he is the retinal specialist who does cataract surgery also.
