17-50 f/2.8 is one heck of improvement over the kit. But since it is a Tamron, need to be careful with front/back focus. My friend's unit had been replaced 3 times all with the same issue, until the current unit Tamron borrowed a body from Nikon at BTS for calibration.

if u're just starting then 50mm isnt long enuff..
u can try the kitlens.. dont worry lenses' price doesnt drop down so fast..
instead of going for the specs, why not learn all the technique first, right?
f8 at 105mm gives a nice bokeh i tell u.. providing u got the right setup of subject - background

it took about 2 replacements before i was happy with my tammy. if you get a working lens trust me this baby won't make you regret a dime. a beginner or not, getting the 1750 with a constant f/2.8 instead of the kitlens is the best choice. there's hardly any difference at 105 and 50 that a good pp crop can't fix (come on a D90 is 12mgpx). the perspective doesn't change with a crop. you'll feel the crippling disadvantage of the f/5.6 max on the kit soon enough.

the price difference should be somewhere between 500 ringgit last i saw.

not saying a kit lens is bad (i've taken a few pics with the A200 kitlens that im proud of), but honestly the d90's kitlens is just overpriced.

craving for the tamron sp90 tho.

The lens if you get a good copy you're lucky. Price is about RM1850 to RM1950 roughly.

Last I asked is RM2800. Pricey for a third party!

Nothing close to it at the moment for a f/2.8 fixed lens. Closest is the Sigma, and then the Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 comes into picture already.

Agreed, if you get a good copy this is one heck of good lens. But if you don't then you're in deep shit. Need to keep exchanging until you get one. I wonder how if the new ones sold are actually refurbished units!

without the front/back focus problem, the tamron is a better option than the sigma (in terms of price) but i guess that it's a problem even for otai2 if the subject is oof.. the backfocus problem really irritating sad.gif

IMHO, for me.. the lens only helps you to describe ur ceativity..
yah.. f2.8 in constant is a big help..
but i'd meet few people so dependant on the f2.8 that they rarely use any aperture above f8..
ha ha ha for me the 105mm + f7~f8 have nice bokeh effect for me.. the range is comfortable with me
rather than 50mm + f2.8, coz im better off with 50mm f1.8 rclxm9.gif if i want the bokeh..

using the smallest aperture all the time, is such a (sorry to say) newbie way ha ha ha..
u have to experience and see for urself.. f2.8 doesnt have to be sharp.. as sharp as other aperture value nod.gif

anyway it's preferencial.. alwinc: and oh ya, flash is a must if u can afford it~ thumbup.gif
