If you go for cheaper 1333 DDR3, you can try tweaking the timing to achieve better performance.

QUOTE(SSJBen @ Jan 18 2011, 01:11 AM) Unfortunately that isn't the case here. if you reread my statement i said this apply only for those who are getting performance RAM. Right now performance RAM 1333 price is not much diff from 1600 ones.4GB of a Corsair Dominator C9 1600mhz is RM300. You can get 8GB of RAM @ 1333mhz for RM250. You do the calculation. I'd honestly go for more RAM instead since the speed difference is pretty much negligible. And by the time Ivy Bridge comes around, 1600mhz kits will be dirt cheap anyways with 8GB kits being the standard instead. Beside I think right now the RAM price are dropping due to slow demand & inventories pile up, I think in a matter of time it will shoot up again. Just like what DDR2 had. |

QUOTE(lchee @ Jan 17 2011, 11:53 PM) I am trying to overclock based on online guide. But the first thing to do is to update bios, the new UEFI bios of asus motherboard. Tried running the auto update of asus software, it could not find new bios to update. I am running version 0402 which is dated october 2010. The guide mention to use minimum 0907 and above. Any idea how can I get the updated bios? Update BIOS using the EZ Flash Utility under BIOS with USB pendrive...Also, the guide mention to set mutiplier to 45x. I cannot find the option to change multiplier to 45x. Is it not named "multiplier" but used another name in the UEFI? Rest voltage and all can easily identified and changed. But CPU-Z is not really working for me. Sometimes showing me got 3.3GHz, sometimes just 1.6 GHz. Don't know what is wrong. Download the BIOS from Asus website... Multiplier = CPU ratio |

The ASUS auto update tool is just not useful. Cannot find the file when connecting to its FTP server. Gonna uninstall it later today when I get back home.Download the BIOS from Asus website... Multiplier = CPU ratio I do notice CPU ratio in the bios. However, when I try to tweak it under Advanced\CPU configuration - I can only max out the CPU ratio up to 33. How to push it to 45? This is the online guide I got: Overclock a Core i5-2500K to 4.5GHz 1. Enter the BIOS by pressing Delete as the PC starts 2. Enter the Advanced menu by clicking the button in the top-right corner 3. Set the CPU multiplier to 45x 4. Enable Load-Line Calibration 5. Set the CPU voltage to 1.3-1.35V 6. Set the CPU PLL to 1.9V 7. Set the VCCSA to 1.1V 8. Set the VCCIO to 1.106V 9. Hit F10 to save and restart Basically I can achieve item 4-8. Only item 3. Set the CPU to multiplier to 45x cannot be done. Is it because I was still on the old bios yesterday? Hopefully today when i go back and update bios, i can manually set it to 45x. |

Go figure out your way to update the BIOS,i update it though EZFlash inside the BIOS itself. You have many options on the way to update the BIOS, reading the motherboard manual will do. I too have a problem with the original BIOS that came with the board. I update BIOS then ok already , the multi can go higher. Remember 1 thing from Asus. In order for you to overclock your K proc, Turbo Mode must be enabled!!!! You off Turbo Mode, you disabled your OC capability. Speedstep can off. To test whether you have successfully OC your proc , launch CPU-Z and look at the frequency (but disable SpeedStep first) This post has been edited by k!nex: Jan 18 2011, 02:47 PM |

seems pretty scary new boards came with unstable original BIOS. What if sh!t happens during updating the new BIOS.
Hope to see new batch or revision coming in and let the motherboard mature a bit. Then just pick the best board. @k!nex: What's the idle and load temp for 2500K @ 4.4GHz |

Downloaded bios 1053, will update tonight. I remember from the Asus update software there is an option to update bios via:
1. online 2. download online 3. from file 4. forget what I will choose option 3 and point it to the file I downloaded. Then bios update can be done in windows mode I think. Not sure, will try it for the first time tonight. Last night while tweaking the bios, I think i did notice under the DRAM menu got option to run the ram 1333, 1600 and higher. Anyone tried to choose option 1600 when in fact the ram you using is just 1333? Should I try that? |

I think it would run at that speed 1333 -> 1600.
My RAM easily run at 1600 without much hassle. Perhaps need to up the voltage a bit (at safe voltage) and relaxed timing. Well, I am using 775 still, but i think it should work. |

I remember from the Asus update software there is an option to update bios via: You may try your luck. However, as we're early adopters, dont go above 1.58V with your RAM voltage as intel recommend RAM voltage should be 1.5V +-5%. Your CPU PLL better keep at 1.8V. Wait for other westerners to try first 1. online 2. download online 3. from file 4. forget what I will choose option 3 and point it to the file I downloaded. I think if you cant POST if set RAM too high, you can reset it by pressing the MemOK! button near your RAM slots right? Inside the UEFI BIOS, there is EZFlash, you can flash your BIOS from there, it can read the BIOS update file from your HDD.Make sure your system is stable/stock clocks when you doing it. Successfully updated my motherboard bios. Did all those tweaks at bios and here is my results. Seems like CPU can reach 4.5GHz. But when idle it drops back to 1.6GHz. I don't have any benchmark tools, only have the window experience index. Previously my processor score was 7.5, now after OC is 7.7.
I did the change the ram speed in bios to 1600 too. But in CPU-Z i don't see it reporting i'm having 1600 MHz ram. However, the windows experience index did increase from 7.7 to 7.8 for the ram. So my memory is it running at DDR3 1600MHz now or still DDR3 1333? Lastly was graphics. I stock was 725/1450/1800 (core/shader/memory). I increased them to 825/1650/2100. Tried SF4 game, no changes. I can see at top left corner showing fps 60 all the time, i think that is the max FPS for SF4. Run crysis warhead, dunno how to check for score.... but it can run well. Windows experience index for graphics and gaming graphics increased from 7.5 to 7.6. When I try to update to latest nvidia drivers, it seem to have some fail message. I attach the picture below. Anyone can explain to me why this happens? That is it. I think I will leave it at this overclock settings. What do you guys say? Attached thumbnail(s) |

QUOTE(lchee @ Jan 18 2011, 09:23 PM) What is VSync anyway? Why should I turn it off? VSync stands for vertical sync. When it's enabled, the frame rate is always capped by the vertical sync rate (aka refresh rate) of the monitor. Since LCD monitors usually has a refresh rate of 60Hz, the frame rate is capped at 60 fps. Rendering the frames faster than the refresh rate of the monitor serves no purpose because your monitor is not fast enough to reflect the change, it may even cause problems like screen tearing. In options, I see anything that i can enable i just click, haha.
