Oh i can understand the situation, HD650 has darker and more tamed high frequency, it is less exciting for certain taste, if you prefer brighter and sparkling high, you can consider Beyerdynamic.

Yup that what I read too. Guess I have to get use to it for now biggrin.gif

Or perhaps it's your pairing that not adequate. Despite owning the HD650 myself, I must say it scales incredibly well with better upstream gear (especially your amp whether its tube or solid state).

Additionally, you can consider removing the damping foam behind the driver as per below.

And yes, SBAF is a big Sennheiser fan club, so its also worthwhile to see how some of them tweak the HD650.

Thanks for you advise. What amp are you pairing with your 650?

from hd650 to beyer t1 to senn hd800 and finally back to hd650,

imo the best pairing for hd650 is with PCwork's symphonica cable. n with that cable, it will drive ur hd650 easily, even with cheap-a$$ amps lol (although neutral amp is recommended by pcwork himself). the veil is just...gone! lol

i definitely prefer the sound of hd650 + symphonica + o2/odac than my previously owned t1 + idsd micro laugh.gif more pleasing to my ears than the brighter n more detailed t1. cant comment on hd800 becoz i dont have (n i wont spend as much) high end amps for it.

JRiver > Schiit Wyrd > Matrix X-Sabre > Burson Conductor (amp line in) > HD650

Current setup I am using with the HD650, but could have gotten a Schiit Valhalla 2 if I was really short on cash as it's an OTL tube amp meant for high Z cans like the HD650/800

Clocked 72 hrs. Sounds more correct and pleasing now.

Listened for the past 2 hours and gotta say it goes like this

Modded HD800 >= HD800s > Unmodded HD800

The 6K peak feels overly damped than it should than the modded HD800 which loses its sparkle in the highs. Will listen to it more over the week.

Edited:

PS: HD800s joke that pissed many head fi fanboys who don't get sarcasm.

I find it kinda lame that modifiers are fixing issues from bug mega buck companies better.
Astell and Kern, I am looking at you. And your 22 ohm output impedance. And your 3 Ohm output impedance when you did eventually, Try to fix it.

That's one of the reason why I refused to buy an iriver product the moment they dissed Vinnie for claiming the mod was dangerous in the first place, took someone more experienced to school them on how amateur they are on mismatched impedance.

Back to the HD800s, gotta say that the sub-bass at about 100hz is more audible which is a good thing which makes it more genre friendly than the original HD800 was.

Overall, it still has alot of HD800 similarities with just a different tuning which most were complaining about (i.e: lack of sub-bass & 6K peak sibilance), wouldn't exactly call it an upgrade if you can mod the original HD800.

That video reminds me the driver issue in HD518, HD558 and HD598: same drivers but different housing and numbers of absorber etc. Eventually it comes out with famous HD558 mod

And so the Graham Slee Solo amplifier, the difference between the ultra linear and normal version: additional cable

Back to HD800, my first impression of HD800 is huge soundstage, very clear seperation, sharp vocal. It is worst to my ears especially paired with HDVD800. And many reviews comment on HD800 that it is a very hard to find suitable DAC and AMP. rclxub.gif

So, I am not sure whether HD800S can be easily paired with any DAC and AMP or not.

If you didn't particularly like the HD800 sound signature (i.e: brightish elevated around 4K-6K), doubt you'll like the HD800s unless its only the highs that turn you off while other frequencies are ok to your ears).

Haven't heard the T1 2nd gen, but if my memory serves me right, I didn't like the T1 at all where it felt more like the real "facetweeter" in comparison against the HD800.

But this is my personal bias against the T1 which most do not agree with me.

Do give both the 800 & 800s once it arrives in Malaysia but I highly doubt the price isn't anything to brag about locally as it's price controlled by Sennheiser Malaysia.
