Sennheiser to cooperate with smartphone startup Phonebloks

https://www.facebook.com/SennheiserAsia/pho...7811330/?type=1

http://en-us.sennheiser.com/news-sennheise...rtup-phonebloks

Audio specialist Sennheiser officially announces its partnership with Phonebloks today. The startup company Phonebloks, founded by the Dutch designer Dave Hakkens, has developed an idea for a modular smartphone where customers can use individual components to compile a phone specifically to suit their own needs. Sennheiser is one of the initiative’s first supporters and will be contributing its audio expertise. The concept of Phonebloks has been picked up by Google for the newly founded "Project Ara", and they are just now working on the detailed functionality of the new forward-looking phone.

Content

Phoneblok with exchangeable components
Dave Hakkens’ idea is both simple and visionary: The Phonebloks founder is planning to create a basic mobile phone that is modular in structure, allowing a variety of add-ons – or bloks. This means that each user will be able to customise their own model and even replace any defective modules if required. Whether it’s the display, the battery or the speaker, any component that needs repair or upgrade can quickly be replaced by anyone without needing any major technical knowledge.
“Every time we discard a gadget, we throw away many valuable components that are still in perfect working order. Phonebloks’ vision is to conserve natural resources and thus ensure sustainable development. Rather than buying a completely new smartphone every two years, all you will need to do with Phonebloks is replace the parts you want to upgrade,” said Dave Hakkens at the company’s first developers’ meeting in Mountain View, California.

Cooperation with Sennheiser
Sennheiser will be supporting this innovative project from 1 May 2014 by contributing its own audio expertise. Sennheiser’s audio technology know-how will be called upon where matters of speech and audio transmission are concerned.

“Sennheiser has the necessary technical excellence and also shares a corporate philosophy that places equal emphasis on sustainability. Its products are distinguished by first-class quality, durability and they also provide options for replacing individual components. This sustainability ethos is an essential part of our company vision,” says Dave Hakkens.

Commenting on this cooperation, Daniel Sennheiser, CEO of Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG, says: “The innovative approach puts the end user at the very centre. Phonebloks has excited millions of global enthusiasts within a very short space of time. From the outset, we have found this forward-looking idea compelling, and we believe that it sets a trend for the future. Moreover, this initiative clearly matches our own understanding of sustainable, forward-looking investments. Ever since our company was founded, innovation has been a vital part of our value system. Drawing on our decades of expertise with premium segment audio products, we believe we can provide an ideal partnership for exciting concepts like Phonebloks.”

Hi guys,

Does anyone know when is the product launch date for HD600, HD650, HD700 and HD800?

I actually tested many headphone from other brands, but not to my taste. While for this brand, HD598 still lacking a bit and Momentum does not seems like audiophile.

I had also tested both HD650 and HD800, which I am very happy. But yet to have chance to try HD600 and HD700.

Basically now choosing in between HD600 and HD650 due to budget. How is HD700? Is the sound close to HD800 (very impressive)?

HD600: 1997
HD650: 2003
HD800: 2009

Previous flagship prior to the HD600 was the HD580 but has long since been discontinued.

HD650 and HD800 both are very different in terms of sound signature where the HD650 has that infamous veiled sounding tilting towards dark sounding while HD800 leans more towards the brighter side.

The HD700 is somewhere inbetween and not so much close to the HD800 and instead more towards HD650/600'ish

Personally to me I don't find HD700 good in terms of value as you're better off going the HD600/HD650 for the price given and if budget permits, of course the HD800. Lego Warfare might have better insights on the HD700 as I am bias against the HD700.

lol i think Problem hates HD700 out of all the Sennheiser headphones sweat.gif

@chanhin
I think it's better if you go to the Sennheiser outlet in BSC to test for yourself laugh.gif

HD700 is much easier to drive compared to HD800 and HD650, and like Problem said it's somewhere inbetween HD800 and HD650, but less clarity/details/soundstage of the HD800 and not as veiled/dark/muddy/bloated as HD650. It's also more energetic compared to the usual Sennheiser house sound, so it's quite versatile IMO.
Some find the HD700 sibilant at certain peaks, so far i haven't encountered that yet. So it could be dependant on each individuals tolerance/ears tongue.gif

I don't know about 700 being bad or sth, maybe it's just different.

650's veil I think is due to the lowering of high mids (damn that funny low-high-mid words lol)? It's definitely much smoother tho.

600 is very balanced. 800 is bright and wide.

get a 600 or 650, then balance money get a decent DAC and Amp, and you will be feeling like in heaven.

I kinda agree with problem, personally tested 600, 650, 700 and 800, 700 is the worst among them.

Yes, 600 is very balanced and consistent... to the point that at times it feels a bit dull. But it's still reliable and a good all rounder. Clarity, details and soundstage wise still behind 700 and 800.

Thanks for the information. Anyone know when HD700 was produced? My guess is between 2003 and 2009?

I think problem has his point. Try checking headfi forums, lots of HD600/HD650 along HD800. But HD700 relatively rare... funny... Some product design mistake? sweat.gif

CES 2012 I think? Definitely sure it came out quite a few years after the HD800 as an alternative

The HD700 has its target audiences, not everyone likes it as its either you like it or hate it.

Whereas the HD600/650 is usually termed as best value for money which I believe scales very well to higher upstream gear. People had been pairing the HD600 with $5000 amps and above even before the HD800 was released.

I met a nice fellow from Perak during last year KLAV where I was supposed to sell the HE-500 to him and find it amazing how he paired his HD600 with a Schiit Lyr with some very nice NOS Siemens tubes which easily costed more than the amp itself sweat.gif

I'd think it's the vision of the engineers. Just that the market isn't that welcoming to the idea.

Go balanced! Haha. Since it's balance ready with the removable cables!
