Portsmouth will not be permitted to play in the Europa League next season, the Football Association and Premier League have told the club.

Portsmouth would have qualified to play in Europe next season after reaching the FA Cup final against Chelsea - who will be in the Champions League - but the club's administrators have been told that any late application for a UEFA club licence will not be considered due to the financial problems.

Cup finalists Portsmouth told to forget Europa League lifeline

A joint statement from the FA and Premier League said: "The FA and Premier League have confirmed to the administrators of Portsmouth Football Club that they shall not consider any late application for granting of a UEFA Club Licence for the 2010-11 season."
Click here to find out more!

The decision means that the team who finish seventh in the Premier League - currently Liverpool - would play in the Europa League instead.

UEFA had said Portsmouth could submit a late application before May 31 but the Premier League and the FA believe Portsmouth's financial situation - debts total £119million - is so bad that they would not meet any of the criteria.

The administrators do not expect the club to go in to a company voluntary agreement (CVA) until June 6, while the fact that so much money is owed to clubs, other football creditors and Her Majesty's Customs and Revenues.

There was also a strong feeling at the FA and the Premier League that one of the reasons the UEFA club licence was set up was to try to prevent clubs being run as badly as Portsmouth have been.

Portsmouth's administrator Andrew Andronikou had been confident that he could make a case for the club to be given the licence and said the ruling was unfair on Pompey fans.

Andronikou told Press Association Sport: "We have spent a long time going through all the necessary steps and we had hoped to make an application next week.

"We felt that we would do our bit and that it would be up to the FA and the Premier League to do theirs.

"It's wrong for the fans that they should not be allowed to support their club in Europe next season."

did u the one said if we concede 3goal n scored 4goal still we can get 3pts something like tat???
if yes them i wanna comment on ur post tats all... conceding 3goal is unacceptable for a big team n thre's must be prob with if tat happened.. even the striker score 4goal then u opponet rescored another 2goal mean u team lose 5-4  sweat.gif

anyway i agree this idea.. we dun really nid a new defender cz we oredi got many now like i posted b4

The only one(s) that seem to have problem with the mentality of "if they score 1 goal, we score 2. If they score 2, we're going to score 3" / philosophy of footballing would be YOU (skeleton202) and Red Nose.

You want some facts? Straight from Rudi Voller himself, he said those words that I've quoted and unquoted. Was it in WORLD CUP 2002 or EURO 2004, but I dare swear that he did.

I recall when Red Nose sarcastically made a comment last season about Liverpool and Arsenal's game, where he said the score looked more like a game of cricket, not football. Or something along those lines.

My point here being?

whether its 1-0 or a 10-9 scoreline, a goal is still a goal, and a lead is still a lead. You've got problems with that? Rudi Voller didn't. The entire Germany team didn't. Though they bowed out in the game (got defeated by eventual winners) but all out their "journey" they proved a point.

So what's wrong if Liverpool started leaking goals like in last season, and still win? I find no problem. Absolutely no problem. The entire debate about to man mark or to zonal mark, it'll rage on till the cows go home, the old fat lady sings, or whatever, but if i'm looking in perspective, a win is still a win, even if the entire game got me glued to my seat panting and sweating due to near-heart-attacks-esque syndrome.

What's wrong with Glen Johnson attacking? What's wrong with Insua being unable to defend? Its as good as questioning why Roberto Carlos doesn't stick to his offside trap-line instead of attacking.

And not to mention, Roberto Carlos is also a suspect when it comes to defending too. Many goals were conceded just because he wasn't able to race back in time to defend his side properly.

Back to Liverpool. What goes with Glen Johnson in Liverpool. So we can't have attacking defenders now? AFAIK, when Glen Johnson plays, he delivers the balls. He holds up well, he brings up the ball into the midfield (where he tries to score) or down the flanks where he crosses. I'm not a person with good memory, but IIRC one or two goals by Dirk Kuyt down the flank are all because Glen Johnson was able to bring the ball from his side down to the half-line, before chipping it to Kurt who set it up.

When we've got defenders that can attack (in cases of set pieces, you even see Kyriagkos running up to get a piece of the action, nearly scoring possible a few headers himself), its a luxury that Liverpool (and other teams too!) should utilize.

In the end, I'll say most Liverpool supporters, if indeed we're winning 5-4, 3-2, and 6-5, won't be grunting about "comebacks". The only thing they'll grumble? Try to get a better sheet or a clean one. But nothing nasty, and nothing malicious.

If that is a problem.

I stand by my opinion until I'm corrected.

I got no prob with leaking goals but end up outscoring your opponents. That 3 pts in the bag, closer to the title. And i do remember when before glenny was bought, some guys here posted that our fullbacks ain't attacking enuff. We bought glenny, and now there are some here who complaints he does not doing well in defensive.

Yes, i must admit that he is a bit weak defensively but you can't get an absolute perfect fullback, its just human nature. I just hope next season we can continue with the core of the team with 3-4 new faces. Yes, i hope glenny will stay with us next season.

The main problem of this season Liv facing is inability to score goal, especially in away matches.

Can look at the statistic, straight away can pinpoint out the weakness. Only manage to win 4 games for the entire 17 away matches, and only score 14 goals only out of 17 matches which is the lowest in the top half table teams. Even Birmingham 18, Everton 25 goals, is miles better than.

For home games, Liv just win 13 matches out of 18, which just shy 1 win as compared to MU, and Arsenal, and better than Spurs.

I would say, it could be down to too negativity mindset, tactics issue as well.
1 striker + 2 DM, is not threating enough opponent goals.

To have Gleeny has been positive for the team. I also hope he will be with us next season.
He offers an attractive part in our attacking...defensively..he has a few flaws.
I am personally ok with it...

Carra, Agger, Skrtel, Insua, Aurelio are good and with Reina...defensively it's quite solid.

Gerrard, Masch, Kuyt, Babel, Benny, and Lucas are also a very attractive midfield.
Lucas has improved but to fill in the shoes of Xabi especially when Gerrard was injured and Aquilani unfit/injured...may be asking too much.

I personally want to see more of Aquilani.
He's actually quite good with ROMA and i believe he has to prove himself next season. He has vision with some good passes provided...with consistency he may prove a good buy..(at least thats what i'm hoping)

Ngog has filled the gaps when Torres is not around..may not be such a wonderkid but definately has shown some promise. Torres is instrumental but has been hit with injury problems..which i think to be a winning league side, we cannot afford. So i'm hoping for that matter to be looked into by Rafa.
Agreed that Kuyt is a striker but he is always deployed wide...and sometimes it's affective but sometimes it's frustrating...i like him as he is a workaholic and has covered a few position when we're hit with injuries but as i mention, our side need to be able to go on and get the result even when Torres / Gerrard are injured.

My ideal team for next season without the inclusion of newbies

1. Reina
2. Carra
3. Agger
4. Glenny
5. ..... (Aurelio/Insua)

6. Masch
7. Aquilani
8. Gerrard
9. ...... (Maxi/Benny/ babel)

10. Torres
11. ..... (Ngog/Kuyt)

Just my 2 cents

I think we do not need to add defender..The only thing is how to get the right combination on two center-back. I love watching agger with skrtel/krygkos combined which will push carragher on right back.

my vote striker..we need additional striker badly..
*
skrtel/kyrgiakos will simply become carra's successor once carra retire later..
our defenders are all gud already and we dun need to add player in that position..
guys pls dun put blame only on our defenders just becos we conceded much goal this season..
i can say our whole team were inconsistent and lack of confident n determination, but dun blame individual player only, that's not fair...

Over an hour gone and no decent chances created apart from gerrard's snapshot. It' shardly entertaining football with almost every player looking barely interested. Ngog and benayoun looked terribly lethargic and can't keep up with opposition pllayers' runs.

We look to be pretty lucky if we can get away with a 1 goal deficit. The players are all out of sorts, just saw how a wondeerfully created chance that fell for kuyt and we somehow can't even manage a shot.

Would hope to see 'livelier' players coming into the side, at the moment babel seemed to be making an impact, perhaps el zhar could further lit up the fire.
