i thought d5000 can easily up to 1600 without much noise?
*

ermm...i try my best to keep d iso as low as possible. normally at iso 100 (Lo1).
unless higher iso required then i only start to bump d iso... but nvr did anytg above iso 800...
imo, i rather compensate any higher iso than iso 800 by d use of tripod... blush.gif

noise actually depends on your situation one. if you use it correctly high ISO won't produce too obvious noise. My ex-d40 also shot some outside a temple with ISO1600 during CNY, it's quite usable also. Apply slight noise reduction in photoshop and it turned out quite ok.

Erm i actually don't know how to use exposure compensation... Is it that your current setup tends to overexpose a bit when metering, so u set it to -0.3?

Hmm on my D40 even ISO400 also i kedekut... Now using D90, the max i use is ISO 1250 for snapshots (for example, capturing receipt for bank in... etc which doesn't need to be too nice) =D Normally using 200~400.
*
exposure compensation is only available in P, S and A mode. on entry level models, can change it by pressing "-/+" button behind the shutter button n turning the wheel. this is the same button to change aperture during M mode. IINM d90's button is at the same location.

the reason i set to -0.3 so i dun have to use too slow a shutter speed to reduce blur. i end up with a darker shot of course, but lightroom can fix that smile.gif

QUOTE(seng87 @ May 6 2010, 11:42 PM)
Choosing on what ISO to shoot is depending on the light source... If under extreme conditions, we got no choice but to bump the ISO higher, if there is an acceptable light source, we can lower the ISO to make sure the pic has the lowest possible noise on it... If u got tripod with u, that will be better, cause long exposure won't be a problem already.. But it depends on what kind of shot u are taking... IIANM, D90 or D5000 will get obvious noise if there is too much white scene in the pic...
*
got tripod oso, long exposure is still a problem if u're trying to shoot human beings tongue.gif

OMG, don't use ISO 100. Use 200 as minimum. The reason nikon label ISO 100 as Lo1 because it's not optimised at ISO 100. The sensor performs the best at ISO200 onwards until ISO 1600 (or 3200 i 4got). Same goes to Hi1.

Use 200 instead =D

You "can't get a hang of it"? that means you need more experience. shoot more and try more.

D40 isn't sucks in low light situation, just that the noise control is not that good. to get well exposed low light photo,
No budget:
1. increase aperture to maximum (Lower F number, F3.5 in kit lens)
2. Lower shutter speed with tripod + LOW ISO(for static objects/landscape)
3. High ISO, acceptably low shutter speed, big aperture(around 1/50~1/80)
4. POP UP FLASH! also use big aperture, but shutter speed can be faster than (3) [portrait/moving objects]

Willing to spend drool.gif
5. FLASH GUN! can use lower ISO or faster shutter speed
6. FAST LENS! Tamron 1750 f2.8/ Nikon 24-70 f2.8/ Nikon 70-200 2.8 ^^ no need flash, bump some ISO
7. PRIME LENS! F1.4~1.8!!!!
8. Fast lens + Flash+Manfrotto! For the win!

u dun need advice specific to d40... if u cant get a hang of aperture/shutter speed, then u cannot blame the camera yet

d40 is doing pretty well in low-light if u compare to similar models. nikon, canon, etc, very similar. low light is a challenge to any camera. that's why huge aperture lens is very important and very expensive. and that's why dslrs with super high native ISO range is also very very expensive. translation: cameras and lenses that do well in lowlight are super expensive.

if u can get a nikon D3s with nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 VR, u probably wont be complaining about lowlight at all biggrin.gif but maybe u'll be complaining about eating grass everyday larr

get a flashgun, that's the best n easiest way, but u need to be able to bounce/diffuse the flash to get nice shots with flash. if u dun wan, get a fast lens. the major limitation here is the 18-55 lens... f3.5 wont do much good. use an f1.8 lens u'll see the difference.

a flash is good for indoor, bounce the ceiling / wall .
in outdoor ( low light ,) a prime will suit you , f1.8 or f1.4

Correct, Nikon CMOS sensors works best at ISO200 instead of ISO100 (Lo1.0).

Thx for the many suggestion guys. Have considered the flash w diffuser but also wanted to learn how to maximize using basic feature. I can get better result using slightly faster shutter speed which require brightening up in photoshop but got noise lah. Havent tried varying iso setting, will try that.

not a must... and 50/1.8D cannot autofocus on D3000. u'll need the AF-S nikkor 50mm f1.4G baru can...but it's ~rm1800. as an alternative u get can 35mm f1.8G around rm800, can AF too

this bokeh thing nice for portraits, food n other still life. not useful for scenery
