Hey, if u dont mind, mind sharing with me ur definition of powerful n900? besides "But in terms of technical, the N900 is one of the most powerful device available in the market, moreover it's very "open" with little or no restrictions. You get root access or administrator rights without the need to hack/jb, that's the right way, just like when you buy a PC, you get administrator access to your Windows XP/Vista/7. " If it will be a long story, u can always pm me =)
I must fully understand the phone and c whether it suits me =)

What they are trying to say is because this question been asked over n over n over n over n over n over again so people will explain over n over n over n over n over n over n over n over again. On the thread bottom left there is a search box you can type a keyword or you can use google to search for reviews or youtube like iphone 3GS vs N900 you get alot of results. Most people will just ask or give answer without proper explanation.

suit you???? what do you want a phone to do??
Some people expect a phone to work as well as a normal computer.N900 is pretty close to that. The reason I choose N900 is also because of it's ability to work almost like normal computer.

The Nokia N900 is a mobile Internet device and smartphone, from Nokia based on the Maemo platform, superseding the N810. It runs Maemo 5 Linux as its default operating system and is the first Nokia device based upon the TI OMAP3 microprocessor with the ARM Cortex-A8 core. Unlike the Internet Tablets preceding it, the Nokia N900 is the first Maemo device to include phone functionality (quad-band GSM and 3G UMTS). It functions as a 5 mega pixel camera, a portable media player, and a mobile Internet device with email and full web browsing. It was launched at Nokia World on September 2, 2009 and was released on November 11, 2009 in the United States and 9 European countries.
The N900 was launched alongside Maemo 5, giving the device an overall more touch-friendly interface than its predecessors and a customizable home screen which mixes application icons with shortcuts and widgets. Maemo 5 supports Adobe Flash Player 9.4, and includes many applications designed specifically for the mobile platform such as a new touch-friendly media player.[4]
Just thought I'd share a quick tip regarding a bug I've encountered while using my N900. Don't think it affects everyone, but I've looked around and there seems to be some of us being affected by it.
Details on my device model: Model type: AP set Version: 3.2010.02-8
Basically, I was trying to download apps via the Application Manager using my home wi-fi connection. Before this, I was browsing on the web browser just fine on my wi-fi connection. When I selected the 'Download' option on the screen, the Application Manager could not retrieve any information from the app servers. This only happens when I use a wi-fi connection to connect to the Internet. If I'm using my 3G network to connect to the Internet, I am able to download apps using the Application Manager.
From my understanding, the cause of this problem seems to be that the N900 is using its own DNS settings for wi-fi connections to try to resolve the domain names of the app servers. By default (well, in my device anyway), the current DNS server that the device is using is 127.0.0.1, which is basically the device itself. Since the device cannot resolve the domain names, it cannot connect to the app servers.
I found a solution online (from the link above) which helps to resolve this issue. The idea is to change the DNS settings so that it points to a proper DNS server so that it will be able to resolve the app server domain names. In order to do this, one would need to edit their 'resolv.conf' file, stored in '/etc/' folder. Easiest way to do this is through the X Terminal and using the vi editor.
[WARNING] Editing configuration files may cause your device to not function properly. Proceed at your own risk.
[Note] Preferable requirements: basic knowledge on Linux commands, usage of vi.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
1. Open a terminal, and type at the prompt:
CODE
$vi /etc/resolv.conf
2. For my device, the default 'nameserver' was pointing at 127.0.0.1.
3. Change the 'nameserver' setting to any DNS server I.P. (I used Google's Public DNS). Save the file.
Once this is done, you should be able to use your wi-fi connections to download/update apps via the Application Manager.
DON'T. There's no GUI, it's a very very basic one, only meant for those really pro/hardcore techies.
It's console based.

If you're near a PC, use WinSCP to remote SSH to your N900, you can basically edit files easily, transfer files, etc.
Similarly, be very careful when playing with those system files. There's also another problem with the Wi-Fi where some Wi-Fi were not able to obtain the DNS, even tough you're connected, so you can't surf the net. It will require editing some files too, need to find back the thread in maemo-talk forum.

If you're in the IT industry or understand technical details, you will know how powerful the N900's Maemo OS is. It's hard to explain to you, but previous I've show you a video review by Dining table, the ending part, the guys shows the power of the N900. In the middle part, he also mentioned those that might no be suitable to get this device.
With Maemo OS, you get access to X-Terminal out of the box, which is a console like COMMAND PROMPT for Windows. From there, you can do a lot of things, if you're a technical person or linux pro that is. Then if you're just a normal user who wants prefer a simple phone, then this phone is not for you. iPhone is the phone that covers everything, and only let you see what they want you to see, OR only allow you to do, what they allow you do to. But, it's enough for most people, plus it's safer for most people.
Besides, since the N900 is very "open", you can see just soooo many things can be done on the N900, people can customize the OS easily, add new things to the Desktop which allows you to modify somethings, customize, etc. Even the Messaging Conversations can be customize easily.
Even if you're not a technical person, the N900 still have a very unique, one of a kind OS, which have the "panorama" Desktop concept, and allow you to cuztomize the Desktop easily, creatively. If you check out other smartphones, their using HomeScreen which have a fixed template or location, there's customization but it is limited and have fixed positioning. The Maemo OS Desktop concept is just like our PC Windows Desktop, you can place icons anywhere you like, you can place it overlap one another, and the GUI looks nice to MOST people. There is also nice and smooth transition, and the GUI is more multimedia based, more stunning and cool than many other smartphone OS. (Example: Check out the Media Player Home Screen, those icons have nice glowing shadow, which looks cool and nice. Check out the progress bars which look cool and nice).
Anyway, the look and feel of the OS differes for everyone. Some people might prefer other smartphone OS look and feel. Personally, I find Maemo is unique and very interesting, it is what I want. Plus, check out the Maemo N900 official website, it looks so cool already, totally unlike other phone (at least for me): http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/
If it's not for you, don't force yourself. Look for the phone that catches your attention, and every phone has got it's weakness, see if you can accept it's flaws or weakness. Like N900, it's bulky and heavy compared to others, but I don't mind at all, plus it's a smartphone with loaded features like FM Transmitter, Infra, Keyboard, 32GB storage, etc. And also, the battery issue, being a powerful device, it bound to consume more power than normal phone (it's same like you get a sports car and you can't expect a great fuel consumption comparing with a normal car). Yes, activate the "MOUSE". swipe your finger/stylus from the LEFT of the NON-DISPLAY area to the Display Area. You should get your MOUSE and also a button which you can use to active the mouse permanently. With the mouse, you can highlight text, and do other stuffs, which other smartphones can't. Use CTRL-C to copy and CTRL-V to paste
For an example, you can watch the below video (last part). NOTE: The below video shows the Flash demo on N900. With Flash, there're tons of apps and games accessible for N900, and with RESISTIVE touch screen and supporting the use of stylus, you can play those Desktop version flash game which requires accurate touch EASILY.
thanks alot. u r always here to give me a full explanation. thanks again.
if i bought the phone, anyting ill just come n post my enquiries here

For this phone, you can forget about having a "separate" application to IM (Instant Messenger).
Basically, you can INTEGRATE pretty much of the IM to your contacts. What do I mean? Basically, your contacts can LINK with Skype, OVI, Facebook Chat (through jabber, or other 3rd party plugins), msn/yahoo/icq/etc through 3rd party plugins. So, WHEN you connect to the Internet, these account will automatically try to login, unless you disable them. During this moment, your phone may lag because all these are trying to login.
How to chat? The chat is through your Conversations. Basically your SMS and IM conversations are here. The default outlook is nothing spectacular, but you can customize it (unlike other smartphone).
But, if you really want a dedicated MSN application, search for aMSN. This MSN app anytime beat most (if not all) other MSN app on other smartphone FLAT FLAT. aMSN is very powerful and rich app close to our Windows based MSN, but it's not yet a complete version. You can google this for the screenshot and see how it looks compared to other smartphone version which is very very basic and simple.

for saving battery life, there are a lots of shortcut(u need to install) that can do it. And all this shortcut locate at the clock there. 1) Disable Dual connection, use only GSM. 2) Wifi Switcher, disable it if you not using wifi. 3) backlight adjuster, can adjust your n900 backlight easily.
PS: put lots more widget on ur desktop ur battery life drain faster....(Ex: Personal data plan monitor, Amazon, Personal IP Monitor, Facebook....)
I'm currently using Pidgin Internet Messenger, its not bad for msn. You guys should try it.
