i tested it and yeah, it works with my hotlink simcard.
but if you unsure to install the widget. fear no more. the PR1.2 has its update on it. The update is soon. I think.
//PS:If you noticed. The update is in extras-testing. Not extras-devil. So it's 98% perfectly safe.//
This is also one important thing Nokia Malaysia/Singapore missed out and never prepare for. For official set, they should understand every shortcomings of the phone such as this important one and let the customer know and what they can do, or provide the app for them, the USSD widgets.
Suppose if PR1.2 have solved this, then probably they rushed it. PR1.2 have solve many bugs and several improvements, even the User Guide/Manual have added many things. At first, I thought they would wait for PR1.2 before they launch here, but seems not the case. Probably in order to compete in the market (since Milestone and X10 launched too), they decided to just get over the PR1.2 update?

Hey there, there's no MMS support for the Nokia N900 right now. That's why it won't work.
They're talking about fMMS, which is a third part app for sending/receiving MMS.
BTW, anyone installed media player widget for the desktop ? HAHA. try getting a misscall or a phone call. Shortly after that, your media player will play by itself. Really cool bug
That seems like an old bug? I've never experience this before. What's your Firmware version?
Wierd? Official set should already come with latest firmware? No?
Yea, I've read about this bug long ago, since I never experienced it, so I thought it's old firmware bug. Perhaps it only happen on certain conditions.
Does it always happen when you receive miss call? Possibly somethings are causing it, I never go and read the details, just know there's such bug.
well its just theming... beside... that screen looks like nothing is on it...
i bet wit theming and widget placements... it sure beats the androids....
Added on March 30, 2010, 11:01 pm
well i think the idea is buyer have to make sure what they are buying and is for them to ask. even as the phone was launch earlier elsewhere everyone knows what they are getting into.. and following the history there wouldnt be much changes even if it arrives here as updates are across the board.
Please be aware that this phone has potential but have yet to be tapped into... we are waiting for developers to unlock its potential.... if you can bear with it and grow with it... you will definately reap a great enjoyment of the phone....
Theming and Widgets placements to beat Androids? I don't even think there's need to,
Maemo is using Desktop concept, you can organize your Desktop just like your PC, you can put icons overlapping one another; Basically, depending on one's creativity and how they design their Desktop (or some call it Workspace), it'll looks very nice, classy and high end.
Android is using Home Screen concept just like every other smartphone, and it depends on the theme and stuffs to look good, but that's as far as it can go, because the "core" is still the same, they have a fixed position or design or template.
As for the potential of the phone and apps, once added "testing" and "devel" repositories, there're quite a number of useful apps, widgets, as well as those potential ones.
For those want to know, can check out below video, watch the last part for the potential of this device:
Also, for those looking for customization of the Conversations, you can do it and it makes the conversations looks better. The conversations is basically using HTML + JavaScript + CSS, so you can play with it (if you know these languages/scripts) and customize your Conversations, though there're limitation to the customization.
Actually its like you are watching Transformer in back 198++ on Symbian V5
and on N900 its like watching Transformer in 2009
Btw, there's already SNES, Sega MegaDrive2 (PicoDrive) emulator, it works with accelerometer too.
While N64 and PSX emulator is in the works, some PSX games work pretty well as read from user's feedback. It's currently still unstable and many games are still unsupported or run very slow.
There's also stratagus where you can play warcraft II or Starcraft, but the game is not complete version due to the different engine.
Plus, if you install DosBox... you can pretty much play many of the Dos Games, such as Dune2, Command & Conquer 95, Red Alert, etc.
i see.... so, wut about the screen's response and sensitivity? i am contemplating btwn this phone or HTC desire.... the major difference btwn these phones are the screens... i think that capacitative screen is better, like iphone. but wut abt ur opinion abt n900?
It depends, a lot of people want capacitive because it's sort of the trend, but capacitive is less accurate.
With the N900, you can use your fingernail to touch small links in websites (e.g. Facebook) without having to zoom in, or you can use stylus. You can play those Flash Games or games that requires accurate touch, especially Flash for Desktop which is so small on the N900 screen, it's almost impossible to touch with the fingers.
Capacitive screen is great for multi-touch, but I read that resistive also "supports" multi-touch, but not sure what it actually means.
Finally, check out the Sketch app on N900 below. Correct me if I'm wrong, you can't do that on capacitive screen. Look at the "accuracy", and you can even use fine pencil to draw/sketch, very cool!
Comment from YouTuber: A capacitive screen is very responsive, as it uses the electricity coming from your finger to recognise its position. This does have the disadvantage of not being able to use it with a stylus or gloves and it being less accurate. Advantage is that it is more responsive and that its more likely to support multi-touch. Resistive uses pressure points and is exactly the opposite of a capacitive screen.

Bro,
Your shot look great! Mine has really bad noise in low light or indoor shots, have set lowest ISO settings, adjust white balance, etc... The noise is bad, but yours look great!
I read that there is some known issue with some N900 cameras.... For AP users, will be trouble if we get this problem...
is there a setting where i can disable the autolock function? everytime i call someone, the phone screen go blank. then i have to unlock it again.
Are you sure it's autolock? It should not lock when you're calling or answering phone calls.
I still remember the first time I use it and the screen goes blank, then I keep press the side unlock trigger. Later I found out... it's the proximity sensors... It will turn off the screen when you cover the proximity sensors (e.g when you listen to the phone), this is to save power. When you move the phone away from your ear/head, the screen should comes back in a moment. You can try make a call, then cover the top part of the phone with your hand (where the proximity sensors is), the screen will go blank, then uncover it and the screen should comes back.
It shouldn't lock, because there're times you need to access the keypad (e.g. when calling voice operated options such as 1800 lines, where you need to press the numbers to proceed).
Use WinSCP, easy to use. (Window based) First, need to install ssh server in the N900.
For those not familiar, becareful because you get access to the system files and deleting the wrong file can mess up your N900.

i think is the screen protector its giving me problem. sometimes when i was on handfree, the screen goes blank too. btw i put the phone on my lap
Ooh, what screen protector are you using? Maybe we should avoid it, hehe
EDIT: I don't know if you're on handsfree, how's the scree react. When I use loudspeaker in the car, the screen stays lit; But I'm not sure, if it will lock, I think it shouldn't. I can't remember. Did your phone lock or just the screen goes blank?
My current screen protector is very thin, but very prone to fingerprints. I bought another from lowyat.net member, which is better quality; haven't plan to change yet.
Anybody have use good screen protector which is clear, yet not prone to fingerprints and also sunlight?

ooo... so a-gps gona charge us base on the internet usage?
Added on March 31, 2010, 7:34 pm u chat using loudspeaker? i was playing with my friend's n900 and the speaker is quite soft...
The speaker is soft, even when plugin to headset, it's softer than N97. But the speaker sound quality is great, seems getting better.
Not sure if newer firmware can increase the volume, my previous N81 firmware update does just that and I only need to on half of the volume. The microphone was good tough, crisp and clear compared to my N81.
Anyway, for me, most important is the sound quality is good, the soft part I still can accept.

hey how you play your drama with subtitles ? you use km player eh ? media player wont work with subtitle. or is there any plugin for that ?
There is subtitles support plugin. You can also install extra-decoders support then you can watch many other files type, including.... JENG JENG JENG... RMVB

The N900 when used with the stock headset is really loud, I don't think I can use it past 50-60%.
Do you listen to a lot of classical music or something?
I made comparison with the N97 Mini itself, same headset. N97 Mini is a lot louder, hehe
Even my N81, the internal speaker itself is loud already, and if we use SmartMovie, the volume seems can go even louder! Another app I kinda miss.
its unfair to compare like tis. n900 beats everything else. 1 thing bad u keep focus. can your n81 or n97 mini response so fast like n900? can it browse webpages like n900? can it be a fm transmitter like n900? does yours have infra?
Huh? I'm not saying N900 is inferior or something, just saying the speaker is not so loud (comparing with others N series), that's all... Is something wrong?
I didn't say the N900 is not good or saying the other is better. Did you read previous post? Someone mentioned about soft speaker, so I just share comparison with other device which I've tested before.
It's not a comparison that shows which phone is better. It's not like I don't know how good the N900 is...
This post has been edited by Andy214: Apr 1 2010, 10:50 AM
actually its just a general comment not specify to you. Because alot ppl NOT U they compare a phone n keep going on complain about 1 weakness on and on. If u read my previous post i did a comparison as well
5800XM, N97, N97mini and N900 to show their pros and cons.
I am sorry if my comment got u excited i apoglogise
No problem bro, just surprised of the sudden quote.
Since the phone gets "hotter", more and more comparison will pops up. I guess that's something the N900 will have to face once it gets more famous
no time to try yet but whoever try adi share ur experience wif us
Right now, it's Terminal/Console based for N900, nothing pretty, it's very very basic.
These are actually more for those hardcores or pros, or those that have additional N900 for testing.
I wonder if this is the reason for PR1.2 delays

That's why asked whether anyone changed to higher poer battery. You need to install USSD Widget I think
According to the "experts", it's not possible to have big difference in mah unless the size of the battery is englarged, or unless they reduce some safety materials to add a little extra mah? In maemo-talk forum, few have bought some claimed higher mah battery but after they check using batlevel app, actually the mah is even less than the original, and the charging level is not accurate. Not sure how true.
You can try checking out MUGEN POWER batteries, which gives extra mah at the expense of bigger battery size, and it also provide you with a modified back cover to accomodate the battery size.
Some owners bought a spare battery, or you can opt for the Nokia DC-11. I'm using that and it's great, I prefer this over the spare battery as I don't have to off the phone and open the rear cover. The DC-11 you can get from Nokia shop for RM199, or slightly cheaper outside. There's one lowyat seller selling for RM180. Inside DC-11, it comes with a 1500mah re-chargeable battery and is capable to fully charge a 950mah battery.
the question is what's the output for the 1500mah charger? If 500ma can faint le. If high output very fast to reach its full charge
Added on April 1, 2010, 2:09 pm
i tested it before its very weak compare to n900
Not really sure, have to check the manual. But usually, I plug it into my phone when it's about 40% and leave it for about 1 hour, it re-charges up to 80%++ or more, can't remember the exact time and %. And my phone is turned on GSM mode (2/2.5G, with IM connected - Skype, Fb Chat, Ovi Chat).
Nothing fancy, but it does the job and the it's slim, fit perfectly on the iPhone pouch. Oh, it can charge up to 2 phone at a single time (with 2 output charging cable, one micro USB and and another 2mm).
There's 3000mah aftermarket portable charger, but I think it's too big and bulky for me.
which is why i think i might wait for 4g to release and 3gs drop price then i will get 3gs. hehe.
browsed through the apps in maemo.org but i still think apple apps are more fun.
If 4G is release, I doubt you will want 3gs? 3gs to 4g is like a total change afaik, unlike 2G->3G->3GS. Who knows, later there is 4GS?
Anyway, more importantly,... one must know the iPhone battery is not easily replaceable... Watch YouTube, you need to dismantle everything, the LCD, the mainboard... Think about it... the battery probably might last up to 1.5 years, or even less, base don usage (or if lucky, longer). I also found out the iPhone's LCD replacement cost over RM1000.
If you jb your iPhone, say goodbye to the warranty. If you don't jb and wait after 1 year (warranty over), then you have to worry when's the battery will give way just when you started enjoying jb.
But if you don't mind all that, then go for it. It does have a lot of nice apps, no doubt. I like the apps/games for iPhone, but the phone itself is simply too expensive, other competitors are far better yet priced a lot cheaper. I did consider getting one for the apps/games, but if I were to pay so much just for the apps/games, probably I just get myself a PSP + Nintendo DS and I still have money to spare. Besides, if it were not jb, I need to pay for the apps/games again, and imagine how much you've paid for the phone... and iPod Touch similar spec with 3GS can't be jb. Headache, N900 better, no such thing as hack/jb. It's a REAL SMARTPHONE/COMPUTER, when you buy a computer, you don't have to jb/hack it to see the system files or install stuffs. Imagine you paid so much, but get so much "restriction", hm... doesn't sound right to me. Why am I charged so much for getting restricted access?
Every phone has it's pros and cons, most important is to know the pros as well as the cons, and if you accept it, happy with it.

hehe stays back to topic. because everyone keep saying iphone better even its not.
True, it WAS once very long ago, I have to admit, it make a BIG scene to the smartphone market, makes other smartphones look like rubbish. It's like a phone from far future.
But it's already outdated for so long, some people like just get into the trend and want an iPhone because everyone wants one. Not saying it's not good, it's still a good phone for many users, it's easy to use and have nice touch screen, and most importantly, tons of apps/games.
Actually, many phones has already surpassed or better than iPhone, but because not much people know about other phones or the technical part, so, people still think the iPhone is great. One thing iPhone has, popularity.
N900 on the other hand, is a very powerful device, BUT it may not be meaningful to everyone. WHY? Because some people may not need it or use it, and what they want is just a more "simple" phone that can call smoothly, long lasting battery, or have great camera, etc. For some people who prioritize on camera, suddenly the N900 is consider not powerful to them, but their meaning of powerful is different. It really depends on what the buyer is looking for and what he/she wants/prioritize. But in terms of technical, the N900 is one of the most powerful device available in the market, moreover it's very "open" with little or no restrictions. You get root access or administrator rights without the need to hack/jb, that's the right way, just like when you buy a PC, you get administrator access to your Windows XP/Vista/7.
For those who are looking for a smarphones, find out what is important for yourself, what you really want, and decide carefully, and finally, don't regret after you bought it and enjoy your phone.
Hey, if u dont mind, mind sharing with me ur definition of powerful n900? besides "But in terms of technical, the N900 is one of the most powerful device available in the market, moreover it's very "open" with little or no restrictions. You get root access or administrator rights without the need to hack/jb, that's the right way, just like when you buy a PC, you get administrator access to your Windows XP/Vista/7. " If it will be a long story, u can always pm me =)
I must fully understand the phone and c whether it suits me =)
If you're in the IT industry or understand technical details, you will know how powerful the N900's Maemo OS is. It's hard to explain to you, but previous I've show you a video review by Dining table, the ending part, the guys shows the power of the N900. In the middle part, he also mentioned those that might no be suitable to get this device.
With Maemo OS, you get access to X-Terminal out of the box, which is a console like COMMAND PROMPT for Windows. From there, you can do a lot of things, if you're a technical person or linux pro that is. Then if you're just a normal user who wants prefer a simple phone, then this phone is not for you. iPhone is the phone that covers everything, and only let you see what they want you to see, OR only allow you to do, what they allow you do to. But, it's enough for most people, plus it's safer for most people.
Besides, since the N900 is very "open", you can see just soooo many things can be done on the N900, people can customize the OS easily, add new things to the Desktop which allows you to modify somethings, customize, etc. Even the Messaging Conversations can be customize easily.
Even if you're not a technical person, the N900 still have a very unique, one of a kind OS, which have the "panorama" Desktop concept, and allow you to cuztomize the Desktop easily, creatively. If you check out other smartphones, their using HomeScreen which have a fixed template or location, there's customization but it is limited and have fixed positioning. The Maemo OS Desktop concept is just like our PC Windows Desktop, you can place icons anywhere you like, you can place it overlap one another, and the GUI looks nice to MOST people. There is also nice and smooth transition, and the GUI is more multimedia based, more stunning and cool than many other smartphone OS. (Example: Check out the Media Player Home Screen, those icons have nice glowing shadow, which looks cool and nice. Check out the progress bars which look cool and nice).
Anyway, the look and feel of the OS differes for everyone. Some people might prefer other smartphone OS look and feel. Personally, I find Maemo is unique and very interesting, it is what I want. Plus, check out the Maemo N900 official website, it looks so cool already, totally unlike other phone (at least for me): http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/
If it's not for you, don't force yourself. Look for the phone that catches your attention, and every phone has got it's weakness, see if you can accept it's flaws or weakness. Like N900, it's bulky and heavy compared to others, but I don't mind at all, plus it's a smartphone with loaded features like FM Transmitter, Infra, Keyboard, 32GB storage, etc. And also, the battery issue, being a powerful device, it bound to consume more power than normal phone (it's same like you get a sports car and you can't expect a great fuel consumption comparing with a normal car).
QUOTE(numanuma @ Apr 2 2010, 01:22 PM)
Can i copy the text from browser and paste it to somewhere else?
Yes, activate the "MOUSE". swipe your finger/stylus from the LEFT of the NON-DISPLAY area to the Display Area. You should get your MOUSE and also a button which you can use to active the mouse permanently. With the mouse, you can highlight text, and do other stuffs, which other smartphones can't. Use CTRL-C to copy and CTRL-V to paste
For an example, you can watch the below video (last part). NOTE: The below video shows the Flash demo on N900. With Flash, there're tons of apps and games accessible for N900, and with RESISTIVE touch screen and supporting the use of stylus, you can play those Desktop version flash game which requires accurate touch EASILY.
