Hi guys,
I am an international student applying for BEng/MEng in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, Malaysia campus. I have done IGCSE under Cambridge and am doing A Levels under Edexcel. I am having some trouble with the application form and I am hoping that you guys can point me in the right direction. First of all, do I separate my qualifications on the basis of units and modules or do I show Each subject as a subject, especially at IGCSE? And, do I split my AS and A2 into unit or do I leave them as AS and A2, since thats how they examine us here, AS first and them A2. Lastly, I have done resits and improved my grades at A level, do I need to show my previous grades too (in a nutshell, every examination I have ever taken?)? Second, the space they have provided for awarding body is quite small so I was wondering if I should use a code or some shortened version of Cambridge and Edexcel for it to fit, or should I leave it like it is. Third, do I need a teacher to give out my predicted/forecasted grades? in the reference or something? Fourth and finally, my hobby is photography. I was wondering if an elective or something exists so that I may take it to add credit hours or something? Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thanks, HadiFromKuwait. However, it appears your qualification is adequate for them to accept you for that course...........You see, I've received an email from the Admission moments ago, content are as follows, » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I don't really understand (in fact quite confused since you have not formally applied, they also cannot formally offer you a place....therefore to receive a formal offer, you will need to apply and pay your application fees......... generally, if you meet the deadline stated, you should be given an official offer........ people who have formally applied and paid the fee will get a full offer straight off........... |

QUOTE(limeuu @ Mar 15 2011, 01:02 PM) what that means is that, you have NOT formally applied for admission. However, it appears your qualification is adequate for them to accept you for that course........... Okay I understand that it's "pay-and-get-our-offer-letter" case.since you have not formally applied, they also cannot formally offer you a place....therefore to receive a formal offer, you will need to apply and pay your application fees......... generally, if you meet the deadline stated, you should be given an official offer........ people who have formally applied and paid the fee will get a full offer straight off........... But you see, I'm not an International Student, it's stated in their website the application fee applies for only International Student. I did everything according the procedure with personal statement and reference letter. Another friend of mine got the offer letter directly (without getting the pay 1K letter). He is not holding any external scholarship or getting sponsorship. Btw, "generally, if you meet the deadline stated, you should be given an official offer" Do you mind explaining abit on this, I don't quite get what you mean. And what do you mean by formally applied? Is there any informal way of applying? |

this RM1K thing occurring to Malaysians is a new thing. Several other forummers have mentioned the same thing. Anyone emailed the admissions office for clarification? Seriously they reply emails quite fast one.
This was never the case when i applied, which was in 2010. They even couriered me the offer letter before I accepted the offer (which was about a few days after they emailed the soft copy). Weirdly enough on the website the only fee they mentioned was tuition fees. No advance payments of tuition fees thru some form of deposit. |

The 1k is just the deposit of the tuition fees. You still pay the same total fees but only that you pay the 1k earlier to show your acceptance together with the accept/decline form. Just keep in mind that you ARE NOT PAYING EXTRA MONEY.

My friend who's first year there in February this year (applied on Jan) did not get the pay-1k-for-your-offer-letter email, got direct offer. And speaking of "Seriously they reply emails quite fast one." I'm unfortunate enough to wait one month after calling and emailing them. I waited so long hoping to get the offer letter before I could proceed with other scholarship/loan application and there they gave me, "You want offer letter arh? Gimme 1k lorh."This was never the case when i applied, which was in 2010. I'm applying for The Star Education Fund under the same course same Uni as well. I won't be able to study there at all if I didn't get any form of scholarship or whatever. Have a younger brother who's going to take his SPM result next week.Somemore, I needed the Offer Letter before I can apply other scholarships or the ECM Libra Loan. |

I wasn't talking about offer inquiries. I was talking about general inquiries. I emailed them before about an application day wayyy before I applied. They replied the next day.
Dunno, maybe they changed their policies regarding customer service. lol. anyway, they shouldn't charge anything that they did not advertise, even if it's for advance payment. Ppl are not prepared to pay this money and it's a deterrent to applicants if this thing get to spread. Monash advertises their RM100 application fee for locals. And the way it works is ppl get offers, and consider the offers, not confirm offer straightaway. Therefore I suspect miscommunication. A change in policy is not a good thing, especially this kind of 'hidden charge'. UNMC advertises a 'no hidden charge' policy (if I remember correctly, don't quote me), so it's weird for them to do these kind of things. |

Still waiting for a reply, guys.
To add to my previous questions, I have a couple more. Will the university accept my TOEFL results electronically? because they seem to have a TOEFL code and a copy of the my result on paper wouldn't exactly be considered official. Also, I know that the Meng ISN'T masters, but, I am curious as to what exactly it is. Can I pursue MSc. after three years or am I considered a master degree holder after four years? Looking for answers everywhere but I haven't had much success. I'm hoping you guys are my salvation, help a brother out. |

MEng IS masters. No point pursuing MSc because you are eligible to do a PhD right after MEng. MSc is more commonly done by BEng holders.
The above applies to the UK degree system. technical questions regarding admissions, it's best to contact the university directly. They are the ones who will be dealing with it after all. |

Updates regarding "Pay RM 1000 for your offer letter" matter.
I've sent an email to Enquiry yesterday, the mail got forwarded to Admission and a lady called Vian Cheh Thian Teh (googled her up and found out that she's the Executive (Research & Funding) under "CENTRAL ADMINISTRATION - External Relations Office" Vian Cheh Thian Teh The reply Admission gave me was... » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Okay, seems like it's new policy this year and they have not updated that in their website yet (or are they ever going to do so?) The short reply was a bit cold blooded don't you think? Still don't know whether to pay up or not coz I applied for Star Education Fund under the same course and same Uni as well. Btw, spread this out to any Nottinghamians to-be that you might know so that they are prepared for that "pay RM1000 for your offer letter" matter. |
