Here's a little bit theory about pentatonic. I guess you know about half step and full step in scale, the reason why we take out the 4th and 7th for pentatonic scale, is because 4th and 7th is minor seconds interval (distance between 2 notes is half step), the pentatonic notes 1,2,3,5,6 are the major second interval (distance between 2 notes is full step). Pentatonic lacks of the dissonant sounding interval, it is very commonly use cos it can be played without any crash in any order.
*
This is the semitone that Little Ice is saying below right? In piano terms the 4 is the black key for 3 and the 7 is the black key for 6. My choir master master who taught me to read notes once told me you can think of F as E# of Gb. Come to think of it my guzheng teacher told me this in the first class. He used the glissando and said without 4 and 7 is more smooth. If only I counted the semitones I will understand why 比较顺.
QUOTE(little ice @ Feb 14 2011, 11:14 AM)
my take on the pentatonic is that you don't have semitones by taking out 4 and 7, and harmonically 1 2 3 5 6 works very well with various chords. you can keep playing pentatonic notes randomly with any diatonic chords.
*
This I know from playing experience. I am still studying the 5,3,1 (the triad). You can use 6,5,2 same number of string apart on the guzheng, but it is not the "triad" as we know it. Yet it an acceptable as a chord in guzheng. On diatonic, any two notes with a string in between is a chord for guzheng. This the other thing I am still trying to figure out. Figuring out the theory makes me go crazy. Playing it is a different story smile.gif
QUOTE(little ice @ Feb 14 2011, 11:14 AM)
if you tune it that way, your guzheng will become koto. tongue.gif
i'll call that japanese pentatonic. upon googling, that tuning is called "hirajoshi" meaning "tranquil tuning".
*
This is news to me. I am going to tune it that way and explore the "tranquil" tuning smile.gif

JieXian,
18 strings are dinosours already. You will have problems getting strings. Guzheng are tune to D major scales.
String-Note
1-D
2-E
3-F#
5-A
6-B
There are no 4 and 7 notes in guzheng. Since you had read our previous pages, you will know how we make up for these notes.

For those u dun know tat most of the chinese song onli got 5 notes... watch tis clip... he will tell u why ..(min 6:48 to 6:58) hahahahaha.

Aiya sorry I didn't read the thread for a day. If not I would have brought my guitar. I thought I will only be watching all the sifus play gu zheng hahaha but aisehhhhhh got so many problems. Stand wobbling la this la that la drunk la nervous la... biggrin.gif

Actually there's a lot of different types of pentatonic. The one without 4 and 7 is Ionian Pentatonic. For example this is, 1 3 4 6 b7. But I don't know what is it called.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhBHCwZ7SXk&feature=related

Thank you all the sifus for all the advice!

Subangman I've already found the address to PCCO. Is it the only one in KL/Cheras or near Serdang?

Thanks.

Subang, the 五粮液 is fantastic. Thank you very much for sharing it. It does hit you slowly. I end up falling asleep and overshooting my lrt station. After dinner at home I knock out straight away. Good night's sleep too.

la Bella, the guitar will always lose out to the guzheng when it comes to 按音,点音,揉音and 颤音。 With bending you can do 滑音only. As it is JieXian had mistaken the 点音 for 滑音. From supporting mei mei in competition, I know guzheng judges will pay attention to these little details to give marks.

JieXian sorry to disappoint you.

Little Ice, your Meditation solo made me realise the power of the violin. This piece is composed to show the unique sound of the violin. I am not sure an erhu a bow instrument can do this piece.

Empire,
It was not the pressure. I am among friends and was at ease. Wobbling stand and height was the main problem that cause me to keeping hitting the wrong strings. I must work on this.

The china made plectrum are available here for the same price + transport cost. The catch is where to buy it. One shops in Sg Wang had sold it for RM40. If you want to buy it here then you had to find the right shop for around RM25. It is the same one I used so you have already tested it wink.gif

I believe the metal plectrum was design for classical guitar. I had plastic/nylon version of it. The plastic version are stretchable to fit all fingers but guzheng player are use to plectrum sticking to their fingers. You will find it too lose. The one on the left is not recommended. The "nails" is bent at the end. You need a lot of precision to strike the strings with it.

按音,点音 and 滑音 All are called bending in western music I think. That's why I was a bit blur, but I know what the difference is thanks to your demonstration la. biggrin.gif
But of course any instruments that can bend got use those 3 techniques. Just that they are all called bending.

揉音and 颤音 is vibrato. 1 less 1 more vibrato.

Can watch the videos in this place to confirm the difference between 按音,点音 and 滑音.

Youngman.... tis is for u and ur 16 strings dino.... icon_rolleyes.gif

"""" 16-stringed guzheng is generally tunned in G. But the last string being a D or 5 in the guzheng music notation.

So the order is:

D E G A B D E G A B D E G A B D

Most of the traditional songs are written in G major, but we just play it on 21-stringed D major without changing the key

Hahaha no la he really don't think it's important. My semester is starting in March (meaning the whole gu zheng thing was happening during my break) and I don't have much problems with studies, although I'm not a top student at all la. My mother is worried about my studies but supports music things. My father, not too much.

My father thinks it's a waste of money mostly. Lucky I didn't begin with electric guitar.. If not habis.

And that me playing gu zheng is a big joke ~ Go relative's house watch a drama saw the 太监 playing gu zheng straight away laugh at me T_T

But I'm not angry or very disappointed la. I know it's expensive -- for normal people like us. wink.gif
