Your are also very cleaver in responding to my reply. When I said "I feel so spastic", you can consoled me well. When I said "cacat" (which means the same thing) you think it is no big deal. I guess it is an improvement. Two left hands is better than just one right hand. I guess the next level will be getting two right hand shocking.gif doh.gif shakehead.gif before I can get a pair of hands. By the way the tip on "enjoying the music" was a great help to get two left hands biggrin.gif

You try and wear your left shoe on your right leg and tell me how it feels. Two right hands is still cacat lah. doh.gif Don't look down on tiny tips. Sometimes they are the main key to unlock all doors. youTube is too high tech for me. Plus my office firewall don't give me access to it.

Empire,
Now you are making me scared. Actually when I looked at your site, I did not pay attention to your Angels. I look at your site to know you because you are the one I am chatting with. The other thing that caught my attention was your long client list. It was very impresive.
I think if the Angles flank you outside Burger King, it will be hard to miss. Then we can go up to Chillis and ask the bartender who ordered a St James Gate. That person will likely be Subangman.

Cassie,
I dont have simple left hand pieces sad.gif The most simple one is 1535 and it is the same through the song 凤阳花鼓. This 1535, my left hand can play even without seeing already. When combining it with the right hand, they break apart. Did you have this problem before? It is like the left hand is not part of your body.

Claire,
You must be at level 5 or so? What tips can you give me on playing with both hands. How is the 扫摇 training comming along. By the way your problem is with the 扫 component or the 摇?
*
Faceless,
sorry for my late reply ... smile.gif
im at level 7 nw smile.gif
my prob is 扫摇。。。
hmmm.. i can say i mastered the 摇 .. since ady practise it for quite a long time ... tongue.gif
but when comes to 扫摇 .. it really takes time for training ... lolxxx

hmmm ... the 1st song i played with both hand was 浏阳河..
that song was great for beginner on both-hand playing ... smile.gif
coz the notes for right hand is 4 4 4 4, while the notes for left hand is 2 2 2 2...
means every 2 notes u play with right hand, there are one note ur left hand ...

my explanation is kinda confusing.. hope u do understand wat i wrote sweat.gif

if u tell what song u r playing ... then i can tell u more , specifically .. nod.gif

btw ... i wonder ... why u learnt 扫摇 , which is in grade 7 ... but u jz started playing with both hands , which is in grade 3/4 ...
(simply .. no offense ) smile.gif

Claire,
浏阳河 has many versions depending on difficulty level. I have not seen your easy two handed version. For every note with right there is another note with left hand sounds easy to me. At least I know I wont play with two left hand. biggrin.gif I will play with a pair of hands maybe slow because still not fmiliar. Please post it here.

For practise 扫摇 is broken down to 2 parts. The 扫 part which is the middle finger striking 2 to 3 string. The 摇 part is your 摇指. Lets call 扫 strumming because struming the guitar hits 6 strings at a time. I know strumming is done at the same with 摇. For practise we separate them.

I think if you can do 双抹 this skill is not that difficult to master. Use a bit more wrist movement to pull for the middle finger to hit the third string. I dont know theory. If you have done theory, tell me if 561 and upper5 makes a chord? I think that is what 扫摇 is about. If your middle finger only hit two strings (56 and Upper5), I think it is still a chord too. Otherwise Cassie you can answer this chord thingy for me. 扫摇 can only sound nice if all 4 strings are struck at the same time. Strike any string 1/16 note too late and you will be out.

If you use only the hand to pull, most likely you will not be fast enough. So using more wrist movement helps. The power comes when you hear them as one sound. That is why I think it is a chord. For that matter even hearing only 3 srtings may be a chord. So you must be able to control hit 2 string or 3 with middle finger at will. That means if you want two hit two. If you want 3 hit 3 after that you continue the 摇指.

Yes, Empire it had been fun visiting the well yesterday. Thanks for taking the tap Subangman. It was facinating how we can just recognise each other instantly. Sharing our thoughs and experiene on music had been an enjoyable time.

Aishatosh,
Get an instrument and start taking lessons unless you just want to listen to guzheng music.

Claire
I am the unknown student of 黄中山 and 李萌. What I mean is I have a CD by 黄中山 that comes with the purchase of my guzheng. 黄中山 does really quick demo so I figured I need a book. After much shopping I purchased a book by 李萌. I believe 李萌 is the author of the exam book. 黄中山 is a good performer that was given the title "Prince of Guzheng".

Whenever, I feel I can master a skill (手法) from the CD, I just ask laoshi about it. As a teacher he cant say no. It is his job to teach an interested student. So I am really at 2-3 grade but I have learn all of the skills. I asked my laoshi, when is he going to teach me 2 hands, now that I had mastered all skills. He told me to be paitent. I dont intend to. I took songs he gave me (which he asked not to play the left hand) and try to learn two hands. He never disaprove of me jumpping ahead. He even ask me to teach other junior students 摇指. He claims I teach it better than any students.

Cassie, this will update you on the show.
The highlight of the concert was a guzheng solo entitled战台风。This performer drew the most applause. The biggest disappointment for me was 黄水谣 being rendered by 2 pianos. If you are not familiar with the water and waves sound, listening to the piano version makes it worse. There a big difference between strings struck with padding and plucked with a plectrum. The guqin played a number on Africa in a lively tone. The violins and cello did not fair as well when they played “Butterfly Lovers” without a feel of lament. The Chinese band played Malay folk songs (Rasa Sayang and Gelayang). There was only one guzheng in this band and mei mei is performing. The alluring qualities of the instruments were lost. The crowd was disappointed. You can tell that the audiences were there to support the performers of Chinese instruments. It is the Chinese instruments that brought in the crowd yet recognition was not given to the performers. They did not translate the introduction to the Chinese instruments at start of the presentation but it did not matter. Unlike other MPO audience, this one was most well verse in Mandarin. To rub salt into wound they don’t even announce the performers’ name. This is just simply rude. Like Subangman said bo who hair pun eh sai.

Subangman,
I finally figure out bo hair hu pun a sai. It is not referring to price (prawns more expensive than fish). It is referring to size. If you can’t get the big thing (fish) then the small thing (shrimps) will do. I can be content with shrimps so I enjoyed the show.

hmm... overall, I guess this concert is a big stepping stone for Malaysian music industry. At least, now more people recognize them and knows of the sounds it produce. The next step will be easier. Maybe the next round, will be a full chinese orchestra being perform? I will surely not miss it this time.. haha..

I think we are still a long way from here, Cassie.

They treated the performers as invisible. The least they could do is announce their names. It may seem like a small thing. If I put myself in mei mei shoes, I would had been heart broken. She put enough effort for a chance to play at a philharmonic hall but there was no mention of her being there.

It seem to me like the leader for that night just want to feed his vanity and ambitions. Most of the time was allocated to his piano and his saprano girlfriend (my suspicion only). I can also tell he is a great fan of 黄水谣's third cantata or yellow river wrath (as he translated it). Perhaps he thinks he can render it better with a piano duet. He tried to create successive big waves (compared to my simple version) using two pianos. He was a bit dissapointed when he had a smaller appaluse than 战台风. It not surprising because 战台风 uses a difficult grade7 skill called 扫摇 and that is good enough to charm the audience. In contrast people could not see 黄水谣's granduer when rendered by two pianos. It just like sounded like any other gui lao's music.
