what would one Adelaide recommend for a mobile operator? 3 or vodafone?
You're living in the city, Three should be fine money wise.
But seriously 3G so slow during peak hrs.
Outside full bars, go inside building drop 1-2 bars.
Basement confirmed no signal.
But good enough for me, but I am itching going to Telstra for mobile soon.
Voda embroiled in class action suit soon due to crap service.
They expand too fast and thus saturating their network, not to mention lying to customers regarding their network congestion.

Pricing maybe. The merger has not shown any sharing of infrastructure, partially it is quite hard to merge their business cases and billing systems together. Keep in mind Telstra owns about 40% of Three's 3G network, (part of the reason why Three has a roaming arrangement with Telstra) so its not as simple as flicking the switch.
I would love to get onto Vodafone's network. For all their faults their coverage in Brisbane is better than Three's, largely due to their 2G 900Mhz network.
Soon they will have to share network, it's part of the "synergies" when they announced the merger.
I am pretty worried cause usually for voice/sms services it is free of charge to roam via Telstra aka same rate as 3's network when 3's has no signal.
Btw regarding the Three's 3G network it is an equal partnership (50-50). After Voda
took over merged with Three, Telstra wanted clarification regarding the 3G joint venture with Three, and end up they close the joint venture after the tussle for control.
Suffice to say, if Three's roaming with Telstra is over, Voda/Three better buck up the coverage for voice and sms services .........
