I find it quite amusing that no one ever replies to any of the posts asking for advice about point and shoot cameras. People only bother replying to people who want to know about DSLRs. I guess they think point and shoot cameras aren't worth bothering with.
I think the general questions asked here were more leaning towards the DSLR trend - because DSLR has become cheaper and that the purchasing power of most people have increase.

what more, from my research, for dslr entry level, there are only few models to choose from if you want new.
ie. canon 1000d; nikon d3000; nikon d40, etc.
other brands such as sony, olympus, pentax are generally not as popular.
question, do 3rd party lens (sigma, etc) work for all brands (with adaptor or otherwise)? or do they have specific series that is compatible; seeing that each brand have different lens connection.
Yes, agree with you that people are generally following the trend when it comes to choices - only a N or C in their mind. If they could have look beyond that options, they get far more value for their money.

3rd Party lens - have to depend if they have options of your camera mount available. A Tamron lens meant for Canon mount cannot be mounted into a Nikon camera - they're different.
