I'm still beginner..Probably assortment of photos. Portrait, landscape and some sports I think..

550D is it much superior to 30D? I get this a lot: Difference in 5 years of technology is like between heaven and earth.

Not sure how true is that though..I'm student on budget, so just looking for a good camera that will last me for like 3-5 years..

If i am u ill go for the latest technology in the market. The more newer the more added features it have.
The biggest difference in older models vs 550D is the continous burst speed. If u dont shoot at high speed you should just consider 550D for its overall performance and value buy.

Comparison 550D vs 50D

Comparison 550D vs 60D vs 7D

hope this helps

if you are really on budget, maybe you can consider sony's DSLR. they are considerably cheaper than canon & nikon.

Don't really want to go Sony because my friend has some L lenses and he's agreed to letting me borrow them tongue.gif hehehe..So yeah...If not I would've gone Nikon with a really good deal on D200..

I'm not sure whether I need all the features though..I just need a clear view on the LCD, some really good images and good handling..And lasts long too..I don't suppose camera tech is like computer -- the newer computer, the faster it is and more powerful?

I mean, 20D and 30D can still take really good images isn't it?

borrow you? are you sure?

imagine if you are shooting a very important event, and you need a 24-70 L. but that same day, your friend is using it as well. you sure he's going to borrow you?

NEX3 is not a DSLR because it doesn't have a mirror inside but you do get DSLR quality due to the APS-C sized sensor, commonly found in DSLRs

Mind you, NEX3's control sucks big time. There are hardly any buttons for dedicated control like aperture, shutter speed and ISO and the menu system isn't any of DSLR standards. This EVIL camera is targetted to those upgrading from a PnS camera who wants better picture quality but retaining the usual menu system/simple button layout. Thus, IMO those cybershot shooters wouldn't find it that hard but for manual PnS users like me, it's a definite NO NO

In conclusion:

Get it if
1)You want DSLR image quality and ISO performance
2)You want a compact sized camera which somewhat fits into your pockets(16mm pancake lens)
3)You want the similar menu system as those PnS cameras, button layout somewhat similar without those confusing dedicated buttons

Nikon D3000 and Canon 1000D.Both you can get for around RM1500 with 18-55 lens i believe smile.gif

Both cameras have crop sensors of 1.5x and 1.6x respectively so using a 18-55 lens, will effectively give a 27-28mm at it's widest which is wide angle also

Also, you might wanna ask him to look at UWA(ultra wide angled lenses)which are even wider, around 15-16mm, great for taking huge scenes

Hi guys,

Can you please help this newbie to choose his new camera?

Type of camera/lens/accesories : DSLR camera
Budget : RM2000 include kitlens <- Is this possible?
Your Location : KL
Preferable brand : Canon or Nikon
Type of photography u want to do : Travel, outdoor, landscape, cityscape & foods (restaurant indoor)!
Any specific models in mind? : None
Any specific features u want? : Actually, I bought my first camera 10 years ago and it was not digital. Back then, I did not care too much about taking great photos. Then, the camera was lost and I only use my iPhone camera to take memorable photos. Now, I plan to travel overseas, so I think I should get a camera to capture this trip especially nature & landscape. Since I like foods as well, I'd like to use it to take great foods photos. Can you recommend a camera that can be used for both outdoor and indoor? I am a newbie, so an entry level DSLR camera should be fine... smile.gif

Many thanks!!!

no its not better than 3100D, none of the video recording stuff, but it fits your budget well.

well generally its a very basic camera. quite suitable for beginners like you.

the other camera which i can think of below rm2k with lens MIGHT be the canon 1000D.

specs almost the same, but try to hold those two cameras and see which feels better in your hands before you decide.

Thanks for ur informative reply notworthy.gif
I have heard about Canon 1000D as well.
Must include Sony A290 in my list now.

Let's say I'd like to go for Nikon 3100D with lens, how much should I increase my budget to?
