if narrowed down between these 2, then go to shops to try n test it out yourself to c which u prefer
we cant help much at this point

Type of camera/lens/accesories : DSLR camera
Budget : RM3000 including kit lens
Your Location : KL
Preferable brand : Canon/Nikon
Type of photography u want to do : Landscape/Portrait
Any specific models in mind? : 450D,500D,D3000
*
if between the 3 choices u gave, 500D will be the better choice
but with rm3k budget, u can go for D5000 or 550D
even better, top up to rm3.3k get D90

y typed rm2000k? 2k u mean? sweat.gif
as u said your budget is rm2k, then 550D is out of the question
450D is within your budget, but since u said u want HD video, no harm in topping up for 500D

no specific lenses for any type of places u're going doh.gif
wat cam u using? the kitlens is sufficient most of the time
if u want convenience, then 18-200 is the best travel all-in-1 lens
but if u want quality... well, some ppl dun mind lugging along numerous lenses in their travel sweat.gif

dun wait for D90 successor, as it is still not confirm there is 1 currently in development
even if there is, it will not be launch so soon, if u nid cam now, get it now
D300s if u can afford, but D90 is good choice too, n can buy other stuffs with the extra budget

Hi, I am using a D5000 now, therefore i m looking for an upgrade. I am afraid is it too soon to upgrade to d300s or what, as there isnt any preset mode. But I think I am confident enough to use the manual mode. Actually, besides the fps which is the main difference between d300s and d90, what else more?
*
then i suggest avoid upgrading to D90 as there isnt much upgrade
only extra body AF motor, top lcd, insignificant faster fps, n bigger body
the performance is similar to D5000 as both using same sensor, same 11 AF points
D300s has 51 AF points, max shutter speed 1/8000, max flash sync 1/250 n wat u said, faster fps
upgrading frm D90 to D300s aint much difference, no reli worth it
but upgrading frm D5000 u get not only the extras of D300s, but the extras of D300s too

i'll say D90 is more worth cos its usual price is rm4k n now dropped to 3.3k
D90 got top lcd, bigger body, built in AF motor, 11 AF points, 4.5fps, built in flash commander
550D got only 9 AF points, 3.7fps, no top lcd, n no flash commander, but it has 18MP n 1080p video
it depends which features u prefer
if u r asking for cheaper accessories, depends too, Nikon has cheaper external flash than Canon
lenses overall both brands almost similarly priced

well, it depends on your preference, too me G11 is quite 'pocketable' laugh.gif

it u r comparing between these 2, i suggest u shops try out yourself to know which u prefer

ur budget only allows 1000D or 2nd hand 500D, lol

previously b4 D3100 came out, between Nikon D3000 n Canon 1000D,
i would recommend 1000D
but now with D3100, it surpasses 1000D in many aspect since 1000D is few years old tech

QUOTE(sevenor @ Oct 22 2010, 11:15 AM)
Actually I had dabbled with most of the big names except Minolta (strange, don't know why). Sony and Panasonic cameras were not out yet. Cameras I owned are now antiques already. I also malu to tell you guys. Anyway, they were Canon AE1, Canon A1, Olympus OM2N, Pentax MX and lastly the Nikon FM which I coupled it a 28-200mm/f3.5 Tamron lens besides the standard lens it came with, if I remember correctly.

The last 20 years or so I had switched to compact cameras after tired of dragging heavy and bulky slr around. That's why at first I thought of getting the Pana LX5 as my next camera istead of DSLR, but alas no DOF susah lah.

What's the pros and cons of EVF, anyone?

Thanks once again, Sniper.  notworthy.gif

Added on October 22, 2010, 11:20 am

Thanks mint87 for confirmming that Sony has the best AF so far.  biggrin.gif

Will the loss of 30% of the light affect the IQ?

Cheers!
*
if u still have old Nikon mount lenses, u still can use it on Nikon new Dslrs
Minolta A-mount lenses can use on Sony Dslr oso but since u nvr used Minolta...
Canon old mount lenses definitely cant use on their Dslrs

if u r accustomed to Manual focus, u can use 50 f/1.8 on D3100

autofocus motor ? u mean image stabilization  (optical super steady shot) is it ?

some dslr is built in OSS in camera, some are built in lens, buy those built in camera better, so that u can hv better range of lens thumbup.gif

if sony 2k+-, i suggest u A33 (A55 if u need 10fps and higher mpixel) biggrin.gif

and yes, a33 is built in super steady shot INSIDE the camera wub.gif

*
he meant autofocus motor on d body or lens la sweat.gif
This apply to Nikon oni as Sony have their AF motor in body, Canon on lenses

n dun say camera built-in stabilization is better, dun try mislead ppl
as both body stabilization n lens stabilization have their pros n cons
most ppl will shoot u for ur statement sweat.gif

i say choose built in better is bcos hv more range of lens to choose from, not try to mislead ppl  rclxub.gif

that sentence in bold is quite misleading sweat.gif
n if wanna say d right term, u shud b saying those with camera built-in stabilization can save cost on lenses
cos for Nikon n Canon, lenses of the same range may have both stabilizer or non-stabilizer, n those with stabilizer r more costly
