actually it's just a nuisance, but apple did it that way to try to deter us from jailbreaking.

if you read what geohot wrote in his blog. if your phone has been jb-ed, when you run blackra1n again all it does is just boot your device, it doesn't re-jailbreak again. so no worries there.

and yes, itunes will detect your iphone in recovery mode and the only option in itune is to restore it. you can just close itunes, then run blackra1n. kau tim

if you're free just go reboot your phone and see how it goes. you'll see that your phone will be in recovery mode. itune will then prompt you that, and says that you need to restore. you can then either:

1. restore it if you're planning on sending your phone back to maxis for RMA or warranty related.
2. close itune and just run blackra1n to make it rain again

As a point of interest, the iPhone dev team has released redsn0w v0.9b3 which handles 3.1.2.  For the most part, if you are already jailbroken with blackra1n and everything is working ok, no need to use redsn0w. If you need to jailbreak and dont want to use blackra1n for some reason, you can use redsn0w as an alternative. Redsn0w also has options to change boot logos. The redsn0w page has more details as well as download links at the bottom for both MAC and Windows users.

Note: if you have a 3GS newer than week 40 of last year then you still have a tethered jailbreak. That means if you ever reboot, you have to rerun blackra1n (or redsn0w). You don’t have to restore. Try not to reboot if you have these devices.

Sn0wBreeze is another jailbreak tool like pwnagetool, blackra1n, redsn0w for iPhone and iPod Touch. Sn0wBreeze, just like pwnagetool, created a custom firmware to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 and jailbreak iPod Touch 3.1.2. But unlike pwnagetool, Sn0wbreeze is fully compatible with Windows 7, Vista and XP and you can also add custom boot logos without performing a full restore.

Sn0wBreeze can jailbreak iPod Touch 1G, 2G (non MC) and iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS (old bootrom & non MC).

How is it different is redsn0w from PwnageTool?

redsn0w doesn't require a system restore like PwnageTool does (it doesn't even use iTunes at all). On the other hand, PwnageTool can prevent your baseband from being upgraded when you upgrade your firmware, preserving your unlock. (redsn0w doesn't touch your baseband but it doesn't help preserve it during an upgrade either).

redsn0w works by modifying your current filesystem, so your existing baseband, data and applications should remain intact.


How is it different is redsn0w from blackra1n?

It differs from blackra1n because:

      It uses our original Pwnage bootrom exploit for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. (Because it's a bootrom exploit, it can't be fixed by Apple without a new hardware release.) Note that redsn0w 0.9 does use the USB exploit for iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, but that exploit will be fixed in Apple's next FW release.

how do we know that our i3gs come with new bootroom or old bootroom?

To check iPhone 3G/3GS bootrom version:

Put your iphone in DFU mode.
(Connect your iPhone to iTunes, turn off, click power+home button for 10 seconds, leave POWER button after 10 seconds, holding HOME button)

iTunes will detect your iPhone in recovery mode.

Go To:

Start->Control Panel->Device Manager

In Universal Serial BUS Controller, you will find Apple Mobile Device USB Driver

Right Click and go to Properties, go to Details tab and select "Device Instance Path" from the drop down list box.

In that information, u will find [iBoot-359.x] at the end.
