The GPS is based on location service setting, that why turn 3G off won't effect the signal, but A-GPS does use up your data. But papago doesnt use A-GPS.

owh that pain  cry.gif .
But i confuse a bit. if off 3g n data cant received MMS how come GPS can function?from what i know, papago still need internet connection for starting up but only about few bytes only right?
iPhones have a built in GPS chip, it locks signals from satellites over head and then triangulate and pinpoints your location onto the map, thus the need for you to be outdoors and in open area to get GPS signal lock (this applies to all PND too)... thus you can off data and still use the GPS software...

For quicker startup and signal lock, iPhone (and other phone based GPS) uses A-GPS (Assisted GPS) system, where it uses telco data from their signal towers to "lock" your location while the GPS chip tried to get signals from the satellite (this does take some time if its cloudy or raining).... so if iPhone is trying triangulate location from telco signal tower, it consumes about 10kb or so, and this part uses Data connection, and yes, you need to pay for that incoming data...

So, technically, you can use GPS without data, but the signal lock will be faster when u on it due to the A-GPS system in the iPhone, especially when you are driving and satellite signals may be lost...

Jasonjinct: And while Papago dont use A-GPS, iPhone does...

Summary:

No data plan = using A-GPS is chargeable (data plan) = need longer time (may take few minutes) to lock satellite and also must be in open area facing the sky, no tall buildings, roof, trees to block.

Data plan = can use A-GPS = locks in seconds and also can detect location even inside most buildings.

There is one time, my experience of using without A-GPS from KLCC to Bukit Bintang (play play),
Jln Ampang -> Tun Razak -> Jln Bukit Bintang
it still not yet lock the satellites when I reach destination doh.gif

Sometimes it locks faster though.

Finally, they realize they had made a mistake with their previous server-based ST. Now the map is preinstalled, I'm waiting impatiently for a Malaysian version to arrive.  hmm.gif

Hope they come to our shores ASAP ... to me Garmin fits my taste, i am using 2phones now, one is a Win.Mo with Garmin XT which doubles as my GPS and Iphone which is abit hassle taking 2 phones.

I am not an expert but I am pretty sure you are wrong. AFAIK, all phone GPS system allows you to enable or disable AGPS. Up to you to decide. The advantage of AGPS is faster satellite lock and uses about 10KB of data. If you do not use AGPS, then it can take from several seconds to several minutes or forever depending on your luck.

GPS need to find the position of satellite. Then do calculation as to where you are. If you keep moving, you are making things more difficult. It's like shooting a stationary target vs a moving target. Which is easier?

As of today, Garmin for iPhone only has maps for US. The maps are not downloaded, and must use data-plan to download as you move.
*
Are you sure? Garmin system has always allow you to store maps in phone and no need to use data on the move. But if what you said is correct, then it's terrible.

Without A-GPS:

Sometimes when I'm moving around the same area as stated above in a car, I can get lock in 2-5 minutes.

Sometimes I stand in the middle of open football field (don't ask me why I'm there), without moving, no building/trees/etc., minimal or no clouds, it still needs 2-5 minutes.

IMO, it has to do with 2 things:
Firstly, luck. Secondly, these are things mysteries that happen with computer, for example, if thing don't work, switch off and on couple of times and it work. How to explain?

Text-to-Speech. This function allows PPG to SPEAK the street name rather than saying only LEFT or RIGHT, as long as MFM map provide the necessary data.

I haven't got the chance to update to the latest. Anyone can report of the effectiveness of this feature? I guess we might have to change the language to Malay otherwise it might sounds funny in English for Malaysian street name

Sygic works fine on mine. Except you can't expect it to beat MFM-PPG tag team on their own home turf.

btw, weak GPS signal rarely got nothing to do with the app. because most of the apps created has been optimised for the chipset. That means the problem is either the location (eg in a house) or using cracked app
