Winter White Hamster (Phodopus sungorus)
WW are hamsters that can change their coat colour when we minimise their daylight. Their coats will change from their normal colours to a white coat but with their dorsal stripe and side arches visible. WW come in 3 colours, which are Agouti, Sapphire and Pearl. The Pearl do not change their coat colour at all, they remain in their white coat colour for life.

WW are different from Campbells, their eyes are bigger, fur is thicker, body is more bullet shape and their ears are less conspicious. It is easy to see the difference if a Campbell and WW were side by side.

WWs are nicer to handle for they have better temperments than Campbells. WW rarely change into their winter coats in captivity, so do not force your hamster to starve and stay in a cold room... this depends on the hamster whether it wants to change or not.

WW are almost similar with Campbells when it comes to pairs and colonies. Always remember, it doesn't necessary mean we should keep them in breeding pairs or male and female colonies. A single sex group is good enough for dwarf hamsters.

WW are known to fight among themselves out of the blue. Many do not understand that WW are territorial dwarfs, they can tolerate siblings or with other WW when introduced at a young age but there would always be a day where they would start fighting. Have spare cages at hand to separate fighting hamsters if you have a pair or a small colony. The best is keeping one. Do not worry, hamsters do not die from loneliness.

Dont really need to buy another to keep it company one, they are fine on their own.

If you really want to buy, then get an extra cage while your at it, just in case fighting occurs, then easier to seperate them

getting another hamster will lead you to having more hamsters to take care of. besides that, getiing one of a same gender is ok, BUT there are HIGH chances of them fighting because they're are not from same litter.
your hammie will not feel lonely if you play with it every day smile.gif

Realise keeping hamster in a pair/colony has become a trend nowadays..

The hamster is feeling lonely? I think this is jus the interpretation of the owner.. But for me, what i see is Hermes enjoy being alone happily.. He can ply the wheel whenever he want, he dominate the whole cage, he eat everything and don hav to share with anyone, he and pee and poo everywhere because no cagemate will scold him for mess up the cage...

I don see any prob keeping single hamster.. But there are problems occur when keeping dwarf (ww) in pair/group..They can just fight out of sudden..

If you r keeping them in a pair now, then pray hard they don fight until the end of their lives.. And keep a spare cage with you so you could separate them in case they start fighting..

If you are keeping one now, remain and enjoy with ur lovely hamster.. Why do you wan to take the risk and add in another hamster and give them a chance to fight in the future?

guyysss!!!!!!! i feel so annoyed and sad! and angry as well! today i visited petswonderland at midvally(i never liked to go there because of the things they sell. and i hate going there because the name hamsters wrongly! there's no such as panda or teddy bear hamsters. shopkeepers give these names just to make more money and i do get so annoyed because of this. but this is not what i wanted to say.)

and so i went to the rodents section. and to my horror i saw this little white baby mouse(mice) got it's head stuck to the cage door(like tersepit ready). it could have happened when the maintainer was closing the cage door and didnt notice this little fella. and poor little fella got his head stuck and died. surprisingly no one noticed. i did take the courage to complain to one of the maintainance worker.
i wonder how some people can be sooooooo ignorant at times. because of someone's careless-ness a little mice died. it is so sad to think that such reputable petshops do have ignorant and careless workers!

I don't like Pets Wonderland too. Bought my starter kit there. The set comes with a small packet of Chipsi bedding. Since they're out of stock, I asked if i could upgrade to bigger packet, then add money since i rarely in KL so no time to go to Mid Valley just to redeem the bedding. But they don't allow (not sure if this is standard in every other shops).

Then i got free gift, cat shampoo? LOL. Don't have any cats lah.

But my main point is, i don't really like the service at Pets wonderland Mid Valley.

Aww Peaches is very cute. You bought it from bobiac, right?

Pet shop? More like Nazi death camps laugh.gif. Very few pet shops in malaysia care about hamsters. Good thing there's a few who really care for them (those approved by the forumers here)

I think Minmin doesn't really like us to handle her. She kept wanting to squirm and wiggle out of our hands, jumping too. She wants to run, run, run and run run run run run

Not to mention when I make a movement it makes her jump in freight sometimes O_o
