Yeah, Sony VAIOs are still good. I love the VAIO X and I checked it out the other day. Really thin and vulnerable brows.gif. I noticed the CW-series are also out and the specs were really competitive. FWs aren't that bad also. I also noticed VAIO is the only computer line going all out for 64 bit Windows now.

And you're right, avoid Acer. I don't know about ASUS though.

since your file source can store the MKV file, i guess its not a FAT32 partition. but your file destination is. a full-length MKV movie sure is more than 4GB.

you can use a file splitter app. Split & Concat is pretty good, from the people who made the popular HJ Split for windows. it breaks a file into smaller chunks. but then it wont be viewable until you join them back (using the same app). here's the link for split&concat, but u can google around for alternatives
http://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat/

the hard way is of course to transfer everything on the fat32 drive somewhere else, and format it into HFS (but a windows machine cant access) or NTFS (a mac cant access unless you install MacFUSE or ntfs-3g), then copy back ur files

NTFS-3G also not bad. I can now read/write into NTFS partitions. But writing onto NTFS partition is a little slow to my liking. Does Paragon have this problem?

so far i have not had an issue with it. i have been using it for a while actually, just that the software wasnt legally licensed. i prefer it over ntfs 3g as i have had stability issues with ntfs 3g in terms of it failing to mount drives at times, and like u said, write speeds are the best. i think 9.95 is a pretty good deal, go check it out. might want to go with a trial and see if you are happy with it.

Yes, you can change the HDD by yourself. Head to http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook-Pol...-Unibody/1239/1 or watch the video to DIY yourself.
It depends on what usage/purpose.... i'm using 5400rpm HDD, it isn't as slow as you may think of.

how so? its not really bad. the latest 5400rpm drives can be as fast as a 7200rpm drive. there are a couple of benchmarks on the net, if u have the time its worth a look. also, the 5400rpm drives are generally quiet and less prone to excessive vibration.
