QUOTE(El Sol @ Sep 30 2009, 10:30 PM) hi.. Really ar?? Nice2, gonna try it out then I just got mine as well... I got a way to pick it up without upsetting him(learned it from my ex-hamster)... when it get into its sleeping box..take the whole box(with him inside sleeping) and pour him slowly into your hand...remember to give him treats every time you hold him.. ;D this way works for me...only like 2 days, Astro has bonded with me.. Currently i've have some guts to scoop him with my palm but then it keep running away when i start lift him up... |

QUOTE(El Sol @ Oct 1 2009, 07:36 PM) when I want to take my hoglet directly, I always put my fingers in front of him, for him to smell it first(learned from ex-hamster and ex-dog), don't just simply grab him from above, I think that is mimicking a bird snatching its prey...after it smell2...slowly take him, after I lift him up I usually give him 2-3 treats..so to associate him that my hands provide delicious and rare foods.. Hehehe, thanks for the tips I think the core way to bond with your hoglet are frequent handling and to be nice to him, which is giving him treats. mine never hiss anymore...hiss only on first day... Yap, mine will hissing if i simply try to grab him without let him sniff my finger first, my mistake Their underneath feels so soft, i really luv it...I wish later i can hold it like a cat and sleep on my lap |

QUOTE(AshJ @ Oct 7 2009, 09:22 AM) Yo, Hedgehog is not originated within our region, I dont think there is malay name for it Maybe i should stick to "hedgehog" word when describing it to people But, if you look at any dictionary (translated) it is refered as "Landak" still anyway, what substrate do u guys used for your hedgehog? at the moment i used pine woods shaving but it seems my hedgie doesn't really like it.. he will squash away all the wood shaving at the spot where he intend to sleep.he prefer to sleep on the clean flat surface... Also he always scratching his belly/tummy like the wood shaving make him feel itchy all the time...already check there's no mites so far... at first i used newspaper but my hedgie will dig it out & bite it. The newspaper also tend to get dirty easily with his poop/pee... This post has been edited by silverbolt143: Oct 7 2009, 10:02 AM |

QUOTE(ReBeLLioN @ Oct 7 2009, 10:13 AM) easy.. 1st train ur hedgie to toilet train.. n after that u can make a fleece as a bedding... more easy once in a week take it out n wash... That's great, been thinking about toilet train. even now it seems my hedgie tend to poop/pee at one particular spot only...maybe i should try put litter pot there...QUOTE(mic_tcs @ Oct 7 2009, 11:19 AM) Actually pine wood is not good for them. So you better change it to Chipsi Classic Pet Bedding (without scent), Breeder Celect, or the best is Back-2-Nature Small Animal Bedding & Litter. Really?? Thanks for the info man...my poor hedgie, i felt terrible now |

QUOTE(AshJ @ Oct 7 2009, 11:08 PM) with one look yes there is no difference but polyester is not good at absorbing, but still you can fix it for it warm up or playing. I see, i see...better look for 100% wool fleece then rite?Just started potty training yesterday, i put one of his stool inside the litter box as 'marking' for him... first my hedgie dig out some of the litter sand from the box then he went inside litter box laying/sleep around there And, is hiding box compulsory?? i noticed my hedgie spent most of his time sleeping outside the hiding box? i just used cheap 2 liter ice-cream tupperware as hiding box |

QUOTE(El Sol @ Oct 26 2009, 02:55 PM) I think it's expensive lor...I got mine for Rm150, very tame and no mites.. yup, that's true..i heard cross breed between siblings tend to produce unhealthy hogs...and if you want to breed yourself, don't get from same breeder...later inbreed.... i got my pair, Sunil & Sonia from 2 different breeder...Sunil now around 6 months old and Sonia is 3 months old... Previously i got Sunil for RM150 and Sonia RM170 Anyway i got a question, how to feed my hedgies with calcium powder? is it the same calcium powder for Suggies? Can i just pour the powder onto the cat foods before feed to them? and how frequent do u feed them with this calcium powder? |

QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Nov 30 2009, 08:07 PM) Yes, I had those problems.... but I just biar only. Clean and rearrange everyday. LOL i think it's safe then to use newspaper as bedding..it just that you have to take extra effort cleaning & changing the newspaper everyday...Yah, I know. But then I realize it is toxic when ingested. Animals like rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs will chew on the paper, and they can get lead into them. But hedgies don't chew and eat newspaper. It is better than to use wood shavings. For the moment i'm using Chipsi Classic...My 2 hedgies seems enjoy sleeping on the wood shaving. They will bite, gather & bring the wood shaving inside the hiding box like building a nest and sleep onto it... However, to be frank they have been scratching all over their body which i believe is bcoz of mite since there's no sign of dry skin... My temporary solution currently is by spraying Frontline onto them...however it was hard to be done since the moment i hold them, they will struggle to let off my hands... plus i have to avoid spraying near their face area and the belly underneath also need to be spray to ensure all the mites infection are gone.... Change to newspaper seems to be good option to provide more cleaner and mites free environment...i'll give it try then |

QUOTE(pink_baby @ Nov 30 2009, 10:08 PM) 1 shot per week...1st time still ok...but when comes to 2nd time, he knew bout it adi and roll up like a 'durian'..very hard to reach underneath his skin there for injection... I see, then not so bad for 1 injection per session Added on November 30, 2009, 10:11 pm i tried to change to use newspaper as bedding just now...and even tape all the corner...but he use his nails to scratch on top of the newspaper and create a hole on it... Added on November 30, 2009, 10:16 pm other than the fronline spray, there's other called revolution is not mistaken...dr jenny mention and recommend tat to me when i bring my hedgie for injection...just need to put 1 drop on the back of the hedgie and it can kill whatever mites on their body...u might ask dr jenny for more info... REVOLUTION, only one drop onto the body to cure the mites...that seems easier, gonna look for that then...thanks for the info... I used to spray Frontline on my Ball Python previously and accidentally spray onto the head section.. Next day he kinda inactive, dizzy and diarrhea for 3 consecutive days This time i kinda reluctant to use spray based mite solution on my hedgie coz it hard to control your spray direction..plus it's not easy to hold hedgie and make them stand still... |

QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Nov 30 2009, 11:37 PM) For mites, dr jenny said best to use revolution coz gentle on animals. Frontline also can but have to be careful. But if you use any mite medication and still keep in wood shavings, the mites will still be there coz mites hide in wood shavings.... dunno how to say LOL.... it's just the way it is. So once you change, it should be no problem and your hedgies will heal faster. How much does it cost for this Revolution anyway? About the tearing of newspaper, hedgies like to bury themselves. That is why I give an old tshirt. You just put an old tshirt, your hedgie will go and bury itself in it. Then every few days, just wash and replace with another old tshirt. is it this one??? http://www.1800petmeds.com/Revolution-prod10265.html |

For those who managed to potty trained their hedgie, what type of substrate do u used for the litter box?
i had once trained my hedgie to use litter box...Since i'm noob, that time i used normal cat litter as substrate... However, after about 2 weeks i had to stop use the litter box due to: 1) normall cat litter (tiny one like artificial sand) no good for hedgie especially male since it will get stuck in the p*nis 2) My hedgie love to use the litter box but after peeing/poop, he will dig the subtrate (like cat) to cover his 'leftover'. So end-up the litter substrate being splash all around outside the litter box Appreciate any advise |
