whoever said they couldn't be characters?

I didn't say they couldn't be characters. They certainly could, and probably should. I say they're not characters, because Michael Bay doesn't treat them like characters.

Then what does he treat them (if by them, you mean Autobots) like?

For the significant ones, plot devices. All the rest, special effects.

Mind explaining how are the Autobots plot devices? I thought the Allspark fragment and Harvester were plot devices?

Again, they have no personality, nor are they capable of expressing any emotion. They are not characters. What else could they be?

Bumblebee and Prime are characters. They have personality. Their lack of it doesn't make them plot devices. The lack of personality among the characters in TF2 is just down to bad writing.

i disagree, even toy story, "they" being the toy they still do function as characters...

if u'd say gundams are not characters then yes, as the pilots are the characters and it depends on them on how the gundam fights and moves...

as for transformers, they are living robot tissue... how could something living not be a character? michael could have done better in the 2nd movie but he kind of failed to... yet it is still somewhat a good movie

imo, transformers 1 will still leave a strong memory compared to its sequel

Will you say Buster Keaton isn't a character but a plot device? NONE of the characters he play show any emotion.

The fact that Autobots personify certain values such as justice and compassion make them characters. Though they do not undergo any change in expression, they stand for values which make them flat characters.

But that's literally the only thing they do - advance the plot.

There's certainly plenty of bad writing in the movie, but I don't think that's why the robots have no personality. Even that annoying Leo and the Tyrese Gibson character have more personality than the robots.

I think it's because Michael Bay deliberately made them that way. It's the basis for his entire approach to the franchise. He's purposely making Transformers movies in which the Transformers are not characters.

Everything about how the movies portray them fits this interpretation.

thats because the robots only appear when they do battle with one another. You cant expect much characterization from Random Transformer no. 14 when he is getting his butt kicked by Random Transformer no. 42.

I see noob13 is criticizing the movie more than praising it despite the 3 stars.

No it doesn't.

Just because human characters are more expressive doesn't mean they have more personality. All the characters in Transformers are one dimensional. He doesn't purposely make Transformers movies in which Transformers AREN'T characters because they are characters. If they aren't, you won't see that many Bumblebee-Sam scenes and the 'development' of their relationship.

The core of the story is 'a story about a boy and his car' so the car is a character. And as mentioned, they do stand for certain values and have showed emotion making them characters.

But i guess they cant make a movie where the majority of the time is showing the robots, guess its takes too much time and too much work and budget.
But SRSLY, reduce all the human dramas, im more interested in the robots than making them look like some gundams who can talk.

That's just what they say in the press junkets. Do you honestly think that came across in both movies?

I enjoyed the movie despite itself. I recognize the fact that most of what it aimed for simply didn't work.
