Say about RM2k per person return. But transit 10 hours worrr. I'd rather pay the extra 1k for a direct flight.

How u able to do NZD200 per week?
Cheapest backpacker also need NZD30 perday = NZD210 perweek.
exclude food some more.
i calculated, car from queenstown to auckland, petrol alone already cost NZD700.
*
If u are a member of Youth hostel Association,
can get 10% discount. Thus NZD30 become NZD27/day.

It depend on the season and hostel location as well, some out of tourism
location can get a cheaper rate like NZD26/day.( befero discount)

It is possible to travel with NZD200/week.

assume NZD27 perday, end up to NZD189 per week,

How about food?
how cheap it can go?

Cause actually i also still budgeting my coming trip.
i workout to be NZD1720 for 25night for 2 person.
Include BBH discount.

1 person = NZD860 for 25 night.
Average 34.4 per night per person.

For food, i budgeting about NZD 50 perday perperson?
i have no idea how expensive or cheap the food in NZ.

For food, if you can DIY your own breakfast/dinner,
For NZD40-50/week, you can get a pretty decent choice/ supply
of veg and meats. And this is for at least 2-3 person.
For this budget, i can cook a very nice western dinner, or some
good chinese dish, but it depend on how good yrs cooking skill
and ability to utilise the local food supply.

If assume that you will take lunch outside, a fast food
lunch can cost you average NZ12.00, added with the max 50/2 person/week
cost for DIY cooking-NZ3.60/day/person.

Thus, average NZ15-16.00/day for food budget will be
good enough.

There are supermarkets all over the place, like Pac n Save or Countdown. And usually if you buy above certain amount, can get discount for petrol also.

I've read about people doing this budget before, hence I'm confident I'll be able to pull it off too biggrin.gif
Cheaper accommodation might be to find room to rent, but I think it's on weekly basis

10 hours ok what, since you're going there for a few weeks at least.
if you're only going for a few days then might not be worth it to take a long transit

Along your way to the tour destination or you see some big
hypermarket on the way, just turn in, parking is free. Like buying
grocery in Giant or Tesco in Malaysia, any hypermarket aslo
can, as long as you can grab cheap and fresh raw food, then load
into your car boot loh, overthey, the food can keep quite long due to
cooling weather.

Oh, remember to buy the 3 litre thetra-pack red wain they, alot cheaper here.
then u can prepare western dinner with red wain, cheap and tasty.

But, if you travel with the car, more likely u will be changing hostel every night.
Is not pratical to find a room to rent base on weekly basis.

For self drive travel, unless you have alot of time, can do caravan,
neednot sleep in a hostel, can sleep inside the van, it much more
cheaper and enjoy.

did a search on cheap flight tickets in the topic and it seems like Jetstar is the way to go.

I tried looking at their site where to plan for a trip to fly straight to Queenstown but Christchurch is the closest one they have. tried using the site to book a flight from kul to chc and back but the website just refreshed without giving me any flight date options. I'll just try again when I'm at a PC.

I'd like to know of anyone has tried kul to syd to chc and then return? is that a cheaper trip?
