Regardless if its web browser or ads or email sync or any other stuff which transfers data thru the 3G/EDGE network... it is definately bad news for us who didn't use the unlimited data plan.

Even with the unlimited data plan.. paying so much money every month to maxis is also bad.. considering digi provide a cheaper alternative.

Hope someone comes up with a good solution to permanently disable EDGE on a non-JBed phone.. or maybe should us JBed our phone ? I can't stand internet charges like this.

Well, if there aren't any alternatives to JB within these few days, I shall get it JB'ed and follow the steps listed by teikwing... sad.gif

that shouldn't happen if you disable the 3G settings via maxis.
The thing is, the deactivation does not start immediately. Only possible after 2 hours according to maxis.

I tried mine after requesting maxis to disable my 3G. It doesn't connect anymore.
Probably Remedy needs to call up maxis again to confirm if the 3G service had already been deactivated.

Thanks for the advice guys... since morning till now.. i guess 8 hours + and the last i tried.. it sucks up RM10 from my account. Maybe that guy on the call didn't or forgot to deactivate mine. I have asked him to deactivate GPRS and 3G both...

ANYWAYS... i have JBed my phone using Blackrain and applied both SBSettings + APN change. CONFIRMED data network fully blocked now.

all this means that the most secured ways to prevent data from moving in called up Maxis to stop all 3G/EDGE etc, means that no MMS for now until alternative method is found.

I have both SBSettings + APN change, but it seems that data is still coming through. Mind to elaborate more?

On SBSettings, I have red color on the the 3G icon.
On APN, I used one from www.unlockit.co.nz

edit: Got it!

Guys, anyone tried this on your JBed Iphone b4?

http://media-phone.ch/en/software/smartscreen/

It is called smartscreen, which integrates the possibility to turn off EDGE, 3G etc on the lock screen plus sevral wacky widgets that you may use o your lockscreen.

The reason I didn't install SBsettings was because it ran in the background, hence taking up resources. Smartscreen however, doesn't seem to do that.

BTW, fake APN setting is still working for me.

AFAIK, SBSettings does not take up that much resources/memory. anyway, an update from my side. i have subscribed to iData RM30 250MB per month just to be safe and get to browse the web when i am really i need. wink.gif

I just a b*tch when it comes to memory resources hehe. I also took up the 250mb package for replying my emails on the go. However, i will always disable edge by changing the apn when I'm at home coz wifi is available.

Got it, but the battery life is horrible. Might un-JB later.

Battery life is bad with JB or with SBsettings?

Well, I have to have SBSettings (to disable EDGE). Left my phone on the desk at 9x% at about 2am. Woke up at 9am to see only 7x% left. That's unacceptable for me... shakehead.gif

edit1: I switched off WiFi, SSH, EDGE, 3G, Email push (or anything similar to it), Location settings, etc. before I went to bed.

edit2: And for some reason, True North option on Compass does not work anymore after JB.

Some update here. Gotten my 2nd month statement. Strange thing happened, the iPhone data counter shown I had used about 65-70mb for this month. But the itemized bill only show 59mb.

did you reset the counter on your iPhone? perhaps the 59MB is the usage of this month but the 70MB was actually the cumulative of last month and this month?

I don't think it's as accurate as we would like it to be..
Anyway, less is always good right? biggrin.gif
