QUOTE(teikwing @ Dec 25 2009, 04:03 PM) well if that's the case, APN settings will be deemed useless then. What's up teikwing, long time no see!just tested. iPhone will not be able to access the internet if: 1. Place gibberish words in APN settings 2. Disable 3G and EDGE via SBSettings But your above post is only useful for JB'ed iPhones right? No JB = $$ fly I wonder what happened to the Fake APN settings that previously worked... Is this a Christmas present from Maxis? GDI |

QUOTE(teikwing @ Dec 25 2009, 04:14 PM) hey bro! Well, I did not subscribe to the data plan... And the APN settings did work before today! This is badyes my method above only meant for JBed phone. but since all local sets are from Maxis i believe most of of you guys have subscribed to Maxis data plans? well from what Superman7 has mentioned, it seems like the APN settings will have no effect on connection to the internet since usage of GPRS/EDGE/3G will be direct activation from Maxis itself rather than being determined by the APN settings. in short, the APN settings is rather useless now. |

Still the same thing today... I guess another solution would be to sign up the data plan package from Maxis, since I really don't wanna resort to JB

QUOTE(Remedy @ Dec 26 2009, 10:47 AM) Damn maxis.. i am using prepaid for Maxis and unJBed phone... and no mather what i do for the APN settings.. after a few tries on Safari.. it will connect and download data. Not only 'unexpectedly clicked on a website', but also remember the apps. Quite a few apps have advertisements in them. How do they display the ads, even if you're not connected to the Internet through WiFi? That's right: 3G/EDGE!I guess maxis manage to find out how we does it on iphone and found away to charge us. I always wonder if every 1 iphone user unexpectedly clicked on a website and get charged for RM1 x all unexpected maxis iphone users in Malaysia... how much $$$$ they would have earned from a mistake of a single click. QUOTE(yvonnesoo @ Dec 26 2009, 10:50 AM) Guess not, I am a postpaid user and still, I'm getting this lovely gift from Maxis.QUOTE(yvonnesoo @ Dec 26 2009, 10:50 AM) ... On what grounds are you complaining?btw, i jz file a complain to Maxis on their website. i dunno they will take my issue seriously or nt. but i guess if alot of customer file a complain to them, perhaps they will look at tis matter seriously.. i assume la.. kekeke This post has been edited by DFlo: Dec 26 2009, 11:17 AM |

QUOTE(Remedy @ Dec 26 2009, 03:23 PM) Regardless if its web browser or ads or email sync or any other stuff which transfers data thru the 3G/EDGE network... it is definately bad news for us who didn't use the unlimited data plan. Well, if there aren't any alternatives to JB within these few days, I shall get it JB'ed and follow the steps listed by teikwing... Even with the unlimited data plan.. paying so much money every month to maxis is also bad.. considering digi provide a cheaper alternative. Hope someone comes up with a good solution to permanently disable EDGE on a non-JBed phone.. or maybe should us JBed our phone ? I can't stand internet charges like this. |

QUOTE(Superman7 @ Dec 26 2009, 08:51 PM) that shouldn't happen if you disable the 3G settings via maxis. Well, he said he called Maxis this morning, and he tried sometime before 8:51pm... That's more than 2 hours... Oh wellThe thing is, the deactivation does not start immediately. Only possible after 2 hours according to maxis. |

QUOTE(hi54ever @ Dec 26 2009, 11:12 PM) all this means that the most secured ways to prevent data from moving in called up Maxis to stop all 3G/EDGE etc, means that no MMS for now until alternative method is found. Either that, or resort to JB...Added on December 27, 2009, 12:32 am QUOTE(Remedy @ Dec 26 2009, 09:37 PM) Thanks for the advice guys... since morning till now.. i guess 8 hours + and the last i tried.. it sucks up RM10 from my account. Maybe that guy on the call didn't or forgot to deactivate mine. I have asked him to deactivate GPRS and 3G both... I have both SBSettings + APN change, but it seems that data is still coming through. Mind to elaborate more?ANYWAYS... i have JBed my phone using Blackrain and applied both SBSettings + APN change. CONFIRMED data network fully blocked now. On SBSettings, I have red color on the the 3G icon. On APN, I used one from www.unlockit.co.nz edit: Got it! This post has been edited by DFlo: Dec 27 2009, 12:42 AM |

QUOTE(Remedy @ Dec 27 2009, 02:07 AM) Got it, but the battery life is horrible. Might un-JB later.QUOTE(teikwing @ Dec 27 2009, 02:08 AM) AFAIK, SBSettings does not take up that much resources/memory. anyway, an update from my side. i have subscribed to iData RM30 250MB per month just to be safe and get to browse the web when i am really i need. Looks like I'll be doing that as well, brother. |

QUOTE(Superman7 @ Dec 27 2009, 12:09 PM) Well, I have to have SBSettings (to disable EDGE). Left my phone on the desk at 9x% at about 2am. Woke up at 9am to see only 7x% left. That's unacceptable for me... edit1: I switched off WiFi, SSH, EDGE, 3G, Email push (or anything similar to it), Location settings, etc. before I went to bed. edit2: And for some reason, True North option on Compass does not work anymore after JB. Guys, for some reason, the Fake APN works again (I've tested it out yesterday evening and today). Anyone else can confirm this?
QUOTE(Remedy @ Dec 28 2009, 10:10 PM) I had my 3G phone fully charged this morning 100%. Used it to listen to couple (may around 10 songs) on headphones, occasionally browsed few websites.. talked twice.. not more than 5 mins each. Isn't that a bit too much? and left it idle till now... Its around 35% left. Is this normal? somehow i felt the batter ran out pretty quick.. ... QUOTE(Remedy @ Dec 28 2009, 10:10 PM) ... Well, for my 3GS, honestly I don't feel any lags when launching any apps. Another problem afte JBed and using SBSettings... i notice that everytime i would launch the SMS editor or Settings screen... the screen will wait for 3 - 5 seconds before it loads up.. I don't recall that happening when its unJBed. Anyone of you guys experience this? i am running 3.1.2. Well brother, I'll keep monitoring the Fake APN thingy to see if it works again today. If it does, you may wanna un-JB. This post has been edited by DFlo: Dec 29 2009, 09:57 AM |

QUOTE(Remedy @ Dec 29 2009, 10:03 AM) Hey thats great news... yeah please do update again... I want to un-JBed... by the way bro.. where u get the firmware to un-JB? the link in lowyat to get that is not working. Well, a restore (Shift+Restore, then point to the firmware) would un-JB the iPhone. Do you mean you want the official 3.1.2 firmware? edit/update: Tried again just 3 minutes earlier - connects again even with the fake APN This post has been edited by DFlo: Dec 29 2009, 12:02 PM |

Hmm... I wish there are other alternatives to SBSettings. Did some Google-ing, and most list SBSettings as a battery eater due to its nature - running in the background.
edit: Didn't want to jailbreak and install SBSettings, so I did the easiest thing: call up Maxis and disable 3G/EDGE/GPRS for my line. Hoping for the best, in two hours' time. This post has been edited by DFlo: Jan 1 2010, 12:45 PM |

QUOTE(teikwing @ Jan 1 2010, 12:52 PM) am not sure how battery can last w/o JB as mine is a locked set hence i'll need to JB out of the box in order to unlock. but been using my i3G for a year now and i don't actually think having SBSettings actually decrease your standby time. Happy New Year, buddy! Well, I had a horrible experience last week when I JB'ed and installed SBSettings to disable EDGE. Idling at 9x% at about 2am and woke up at 9am to see only 7x% left. Rebooted the phone after JB + SBSettings, switched off WiFi, SSH, EDGE, 3G, Email fetch, Location settings, etc. before I left it idle. And for some reason, True North option on Compass doesn't work after JB.normal usage can actually last me up to 2 days max. (minimal gaming + browsing + iPod, more on SMS/calls) battery life has been slighly worse lately only due to the reason that i have ProSwitcher installed. telling this from my point of view/experience. Perhaps it only happened to me, glad to hear that yours is doing better. |
