I am living in a 2.5 storey house and have an extra masterbedroom at the highest floor. Problem is that the room is attached to my neighbor's room. Will placing at least a 4-6" rockwool insulation help in preventing bass and vibration to travel through the wall to my neighbor's room?

The rockwool will help to reduce bass to your neighbour, but won't eliminate totally.

hey peter32,

You really do have a nice idea on soundproofing. I am planning on getting my HT room soon....just need some extensive planning and I see that you are using rockwool for your wall insulation. Is that a good bass insulation. I am living in a 2.5 storey house and have an extra masterbedroom at the highest floor. Problem is that the room is attached to my neighbor's room. Thanks.

Well, the simplest way and not costing you anything is turning the volume down. cool.gif
Occasionally during weekends (day time not late night) you may blast as you like.
My AV room is located exactly like yours but my neighbor advise the same as above???
Also try increasing your frequency as low frequency (loud base) tend to travel quite effectively next door.

The thicker the better then? how about flooring? thick carpet? and definitely Auralex or similar type foam beneath the subwoofer. Anyone doing soundproofing their windows? Double layer?

I won't be turning up the volume to a ridiculous level. Just enough..(or a little more) to fully enjoy the experience. At the same time not rocking my neighbor's room.

For absorbing bass generally the thicker the better. From reading the Net the min recommended thickness is 4", of course you can do thicker but it will eat into the room.

But don't overdo it until your room sounds 'dead'. I know your main goal is soundproofing (so as not to disturb neighbour) but you gotta balance that with maintaining good acoustics too. This part better check with the experts. Maybe the Auralex vendor (Center Circle) can advise you better.

For soundproofing, you need to have dry wall detach from your concrete wall as the air will act as a layer of insulation. Check out this website for more info.

Just read your message.

After installing, I actually can insulate my hifi noise away from my neighbours, and their Majong noise away from me biggrin.gif
Seriously !

For sound insulation, I suggest that you may want to know this fact: Best sound insulation is vacuum, followed by air, then liquid, last is solid substance.

Since you can't create a vacuum, second best is to create a layer of still air, as suggested by Pierreye. Create a airwall helps a lot, as in double glazing windows. Using rockwool actually generate a layer of air-filled layer that hindered noise passing from one surface to another. So the thicker it is, the better the sound insulation.

Why don't you consider putting either foam on your wall if you just want to insulate your specific hifi room, and paste on some sound insulation material as in this ( Click the forsale link here )for your acoustic treatment?

I did not use foam because my wall is in the sitting room. My wife will kill me then fed my body to the dogs if I do that.

Nice room nyquil.

Yes, getting a good sub will really anchor the HT experience. Together with new speakers, it will be a magnitude higher than what you are used to with your Yamaha set.

I see you have the walls and ceiling painted grey. I would suggest you also paint the wall behind the screen darker.

The room is 21 x 18. Sound treatment is in my list - but it would be the last thing to do after i have upgraded my speakers smile.gif

dog food eh..lol. sitting room? as in living den? by placing foam padding on the walls, can't you use partition to cover them up? or it's suppose to be exposed?

As for the window part, I have a double glass door that leads out to a little balcony. which i would be covering it with a blackout curtain. thick and heavy.

I was reading up online and some sites recommend a maximum of 13' viewing distance for 120" screen to get full experience of THX.

For 13' distance you can definitely go bigger than 90". I would suggest ~ 110".
