let me tell u how i spent 100,000yen a month

RENT:40,000
food:30,000(plus all my alcoholic nights out) can reduce to one if i cook everyday
utilities-10,000
phonebill-8000(which is way high for me)
the rest is for entertainment/transport

psyhzz is a working person and im a student, hence the difference in cost.im quite sure he eats out most of the time tongue.gif and my rent is cheaper cos im sharing but its definitely possible to find 40,000yen rent if u live just slightly outside yamanote area. hope it helps.

Haha... yeah, I *try* to cook like 3-4 times in a week but most of the days I just eat out cause too lazy to cook.

QUOTE(aichiban @ Jul 3 2009, 04:27 PM)
Should I get this, or the JR rail pass if im going to Japan 7 days tour?
2 days Kyoto, 1 day in btwn Kyoto n Tokyo, 3 days in Tokyo?
*
The Seishun 18 Kippu doesn't apply to shinkansen so you'll need to plan your itinerary properly or you'll end up spending precious time commuting on the slow local trains between Kyoto->Tokyo when you can be sight-seeing. Perhaps Firedauz can give you better pointers.

2 days Kyoto, 1 day in btwn Kyoto n Tokyo, 3 days in Tokyo?

If you are on a tight deadline, its best that you take the Shinkansen.
Traveling between prefectures is the one that will take most of the time.
This Seishun 18 Kippu usually applies to those who are strong enough to travel long distance, using the slow JR train.

I've checked from Hyperdia, the difference in length of time for Tokyo <--> Kyoto traveling are:
Shinkansen: 2 hours ++
JR Rail: 13 hours ++ laugh.gif

However, I'm not saying its not possible.
If you know yourself that you can persevere, then this is what I advise:
QUOTE
The day you land at Narita Airport (Tokyo), that counts as the starting of the 1st day.
So you spend the first 3 days in Tokyo.

On the night of the 3rd day, is where you use the Seishun 18 Kippu to start travelling to Kyoto.
Remember 2 things:
1. JR stations in Tokyo starts to close around 12:30AM, so start your journey just before that time.
2. Why travel at night? It is because Kyoto or any other places are closed during the night. With 13 hours travel, say you start at 7PM night, you'll reach Kyoto around 8AM the next day -- which means the shops and tourist places in Kyoto are just about to open.

So at 8AM the next day is your 4th day, in which you are already in Kyoto.
So now you spend 2 days here, until your 6th day.

On the night of the 6th day, at 7PM, you start your journey back to Tokyo.
13 hours later, at 8AM, you'll arrived in Tokyo, for your final 7th day.
So you spend your last day shopping around, and prepare to travel 2 hours from Tokyo to Narita Airport to take your flight home.

See?
It's a rough plan, but yeah, it's do-able.

BUT!

Assuming that you might not be fluent in Japanese language, how sure are you that you can find your way through the puzzle train lines from Tokyo - Kyoto - Tokyo?
Of course, I think the train stations would have English spelling names, but still, even I might find it hard (because my sense of directions are also bad lol).

So this is why I would suggest either take the expensive Shinkansen.
Or maybe just the cheap bus.
Buses are cheaper than the Seishun 18 Kippu (around 4000 Yen++ per destination) but it travels as slow as the JR Rails (or maybe slightly faster... just slightly).

Using JR Rail, at those time of night travel, you might have to switch trains, which means more added confusion of trying to figure out where you are at that time LOL laugh.gif
At least with bus, you KNOW you are going to reach your destination directly non-stop (they'll stop occasionally for their customers to buy food or go toilet).
However, I dare not say more on bus because I've never taken a bus to travel long distance.
The furthest bus ride I went was from Shibuya to Mt. Fuji, but that was on a tour group.

Emm..Japan domestic Flight also cheap...Most Japan people like travel by plane rather than Shinkansen. Can you see the domestik flight from tokyo to osaka , kyoto , kansai , chitose all by flight more. Japan is the only in world domestik flight need using B747 and B777 to fly domestik...too much passenger

I at Narita i saw once very shocking time table on airport

JAL 12.30pm flight from Narita to Kansai got 4 gate....4 JAL B747 from narita flight to Kansai same time...taking 1600 people
ANA 12.30pm Flight from narita to Kansai got 3 gate ...2 B777 1 B747 from narita to Kansai same time..taking 1200 people

total 2800 Japanese are fliging at 12.30 from narita to Kansai at 12.30pm........it still got 1.30 2.30 same amount.....Japan people flight like Gila!!!!

Cheap Accmodation mean you rent a Room only. But you still need pay Water , electrical ,tel , gas bil.....cheapest also need 100k - 150k

tokyo is look like Kl ...k#just look like...Like example in HK everythibg is need add 7 times....like HK a single lowest class patrol Police earn 1 month is 25k HK dollar exchange to malaysia is RM12.5k ...wah you look is perfect...because Hk living cost is 7 times higher than malaysia so is 12.5k / 7 = RM1785 Only...

So in HK earning 25,000 HK dollar is like RM1750 in malaysia only.  Because in Malaysia one wantan mee is RM4..in HK is 60 Dollar .....Everything is 7 times expansive.
If i no worng Japan living cost is 9 times higher than malaysia
*
Cid,
i think, its not up to 9 times but less than that.
KL/Msian groceries prices are f***ed up after the RM2.70/ltr petrol.

tokyo : burger set : 600yen = RM20
KL : burger set : at least RM10

tokyo : fresh milk : 150yen = RM6
KL : fresh milk : RM4.50

cigarettes? refer tanoshi.

but on raw food materials, definitely KL is cheaper. but i totally agree that if u work in kl, cannot save money. work in oversea (i.e tokyo) still can bring back some savings.

There is no plane from Penang Direct to Hokkaido

Penang to KLIA By MAS > Kansai By JAL > Chitose by JAL / ANA
Penang to Changi By SIA > Chitose By SIA
Penang to HK by Cathey > Chitose by Cathey

Along this 3 ...going by Cathey is most cheapest....becasue HK people liek go hokkaido too..the flight is so many and price is cheap also

The Turn around time in airport also the Shortest by Cathey in HK

Plus From Penang to HK flight always have from monday to Sunday 7am Flight...also most early flight...GG so mostly early go there...GG

Go there by End of year means DEC...winter time....emm NO Lavender to see plus everday winter storm...go Hokkaido at DEC is no good plus Tons of Delay at airport Due Snow Storm and those aircraft also hard to landing need circle around airport alot times only can landing...very tired la!!! Sienz

IT is same like you go Tioman Island at Raning season only...you know the meaning?
