that looks very cool... but i have never seen them in any stores... also it is limited to books only and not sign boards or things that cant be scanned.. the problem i have is that i cant really communicate well with the store people.. they cant really understand what i say and i cant really understand what they say so its difficult for me to ask..

keii-kun, did u get the kanji pen? how was it?
*
honestly if u have problem communicating with store people, ure kinda in deep sh** about your studies.

clemong... is the culture shock. I also hard to understand what they talk because they are talking quite fast and very soft. But somehow sometimes I can understand what they are talking, but took some time to understand, but I will answer them with hand or head gestures hahaha.

Maybe try to go into different shops then u can learn how they work. Conbini is kinda tricky because they might say something extra.. i guess is the stamp card or point card like that?

if really dun understand then just say wakarimasen or yukkuri hanashite kudasai, or eigo de hanashite kudasai.
*
haha, but there's one difference. he is here to study, he needs to be able to understand basic japanese to survive.

just to add, when you buy stuff at supermarket they will ask if you want plastic bag or not. if you say yes, they will add 5 yen to your bill. at least that's whats happening in mishima. might not apply to tokyo, im not sure
*
i think the 5 yen rules applies to most of japan but not tokyo, i was actually kinda surprised when i moved here. they din charge me 5 yen! but im so used to using eco bags d.

Someone who asked alot of foolish questions  laugh.gif

My experience was:
- 600-700 yen for a bowl of rice + tenpura + bowl of noodle (it's crazy amount of food there already). If you want to splurge, be prepared to pay 3-4k on simple luxury.

- Visa is FREE !!! Go apply it yourself, it only takes 5 minutes. Go back 3 working days later to collect. About the  requirements, go find out yourself.

- If you travel only in Tokyo or its wards, get SUICA prepaid card or buy straight from machine. It's very very very convenient.

- Stress again !!! If you plan to do ALOT of shinkansen travels, yes, go for the JR PASS onegaishimasu.

- Be prepared to walk like hell. Get a very good comfy pair of walking shoes. And plasters too.

- Don't ever speak Nihongo to Japanese, unless you are JLPT-1 grad. I'm not gonna tell you the consequences.

- Though don't let it bother you, Japanese are very helpful people. Ask in words, rather than in sentences of Eigo.

- If your travel time is limited, plan your itinerary well. You'd miss out on many places if you don't.

That's all i can think of for now.

really? even if it's true, i still find it safer than kl. ive never been robbed or pick pocketed, unlike in kl. i leave my belongings for awhile n come back n still see that its there. i dare to hang my camera around my neck unlike in kl. all in all, no matter what stats say, the atmosphere is less tense and there is less of the feeling that ure gonna get robbed. but if ure unlucky, someone might go crazy due to work related stress n go on a shooting spree tongue.gif

let me tell u how i spent 100,000yen a month

RENT:40,000
food:30,000(plus all my alcoholic nights out) can reduce to one if i cook everyday
utilities-10,000
phonebill-8000(which is way high for me)
the rest is for entertainment/transport

psyhzz is a working person and im a student, hence the difference in cost.im quite sure he eats out most of the time tongue.gif and my rent is cheaper cos im sharing but its definitely possible to find 40,000yen rent if u live just slightly outside yamanote area. hope it helps.

QUOTE(firedauz @ Jul 3 2009, 08:28 PM)
If you are on a tight deadline, its best that you take the Shinkansen.
Traveling between prefectures is the one that will take most of the time.
This Seishun 18 Kippu usually applies to those who are strong enough to travel long distance, using the slow JR train.

I've checked from Hyperdia, the difference in length of time for Tokyo <--> Kyoto traveling are:
Shinkansen: 2 hours ++
JR Rail: 13 hours ++ laugh.gif

However, I'm not saying its not possible.
If you know yourself that you can persevere, then this is what I advise:

See?
It's a rough plan, but yeah, it's do-able.

BUT!

Assuming that you might not be fluent in Japanese language, how sure are you that you can find your way through the puzzle train lines from Tokyo - Kyoto - Tokyo?
Of course, I think the train stations would have English spelling names, but still, even I might find it hard (because my sense of directions are also bad lol).

So this is why I would suggest either take the expensive Shinkansen.
Or maybe just the cheap bus.
Buses are cheaper than the Seishun 18 Kippu (around 4000 Yen++ per destination) but it travels as slow as the JR Rails (or maybe slightly faster... just slightly).

Using JR Rail, at those time of night travel, you might have to switch trains, which means more added confusion of trying to figure out where you are at that time LOL laugh.gif
At least with bus, you KNOW you are going to reach your destination directly non-stop (they'll stop occasionally for their customers to buy food or go toilet).
However, I dare not say more on bus because I've never taken a bus to travel long distance.
The furthest bus ride I went was from Shibuya to Mt. Fuji, but that was on a tour group.
*
actually night trains , im assuming moonlight nagara from tokyo-nagoya doesnt require to change trains. personally i prefer buses. if u book early ,its even cheaper.

QUOTE(RegentCid @ Jul 3 2009, 09:41 PM)
Emm..Japan domestic Flight also cheap...Most Japan people like travel by plane rather than Shinkansen.  Can you see the domestik flight from tokyo to osaka , kyoto , kansai , chitose all by flight more. Japan is the only in world domestik flight need using B747 and B777 to fly domestik...too much passenger
*
i agree. when i flew from osaka/itami to chitose, i was so shocked to be sitting on a 777
