My coach is a former Chinese national athlete.....and he's right now a coach in Malacca.
We discussed today, about the state of training in Malaysia. And thanks to a friend's suggestion to have a workshop, we thought since we're educated in this field, why not? We can dispel a lot of silly "Bro-science" with proven training science.

I just wanna see the response. Also how much would you pay for a 3 hour seminar + 1 hour Q/A. Refreshments provided.
I'm thinking since people are payin RM120/hour for personal trainers, we're just gauging how much can we charge.
It'll be 1-3. I'll attend to 3 lifters, my coach the other 3. I know nobody would be interested in me, so we plan to circle it around.

This will be our guinea pigs, so to speak. But of course we'll be planning everything and discussing with other trainers and coaches about how to run a good one first. This is all in planning stages, and will probably be at least till June before we can start it.

The only not so nice part, is can only be done in Melaka. I wish we could use the Bkt Jalil facility but the costs are RIDICULOUSLY high if we wanted to rent it for a day from the sports council. And the amount of strings I'd have to pull, will probably string to England.

If it's in Melaka....it'll be RM60-70 for gas and toll+fees

Also we'll only be taking 6 people at a time, because we cannot have too many. It'd be hard to focus on each person. This is a very rough draft...but we hope to make it happen.

Do tell us.

wow, its great that you take the effort to initiate this plan! its great to see such pro-activeness from you as a mod ^^

btw, ur coach is so small yet he can lift crazy numbers! its amazing what the human body can do.. and here i thought only ants can lift 10-20x their bodyweights (well, for your coach its like 4+ times) lol..

if i was a strength trainer id sign up man! but im more of a vain sod and go bb more for the ego booster criteria sad.gif what u guys are doing looks cool tho.. btw, by being strong in lifting, what can you apply for everyday stuff e.g can throw a baseball further, able to run faster or able to lift a car out of a longkang to help a blur damsel in distress ?

I would suggest that you do a small flyer in both mandarin + BM. There is a huge interest in the Malay community. You might tap into something big in Melaka.

I was formerly into the beauty aspect of lifting weights as well. Trust me, I've been there. 3x10 as the magic routine right? Supersets, dropsets, HIIT magic.....Max-OT, yeah, been there, done that. I actually know how about bodybuilding too. Just so you know, Chinese style training, is VERY VERY tracked along the bodybuilding ideas as well. It's more strength based, but muscle building is important too.

As for applicability to everyday life, I now grab a basketball rim despite not training for it. I have somehow beaten a friend of mine who I've NEVER beaten in 8 years of running against him since Std 3 - Form 5. It's simple. If you can exert power to force 200KG'S into the air, you can probably jump a lot higher than a person that can only power up 30KG into the air.

I don't READ or WRITE in Chinese. Orang baba la yang. Maybe get my coach to write. I don't get it, why the Malays are into strength, but the Chinese all nak badan cantik aja? Hang tak suko~

Do vote how much you guys'd pay. If it's good response, we'll bring in some other coaches from neighboring countries too to talk about other things.
We're thinking of maybe even getting our national weightlifting coach for the elite team, Coach Lin down. I'd bring Stefan Stefanov down too, but Bulgarian training isn't quite applicable to bodybuilding. And I'm not close to him.

Talk 1 hour first, about the basics that we need people to understand. Then 2 maybe even 3 hours of coaching. We won't limit the time actually. We really want people to go home, learning something new and spreading the right knowledge. It's not perfect business, but we'll always have new things to teach I'm sure. I've just got a new book too about psychology and sports. Gonna digest that and hopefully learn more.

Also, we'll try to get an average level of knowledge between trainees first. We don't want one advanced, one blur sotong. Cannot teach wan. Probably start with just blur sotongs so we can help them from being eaten by .....PT's.

Is this going to be a one-off thing or are you planning more if the first was a success? My grandma's in good ole Melaka and I plan to visit her sometime in May.

We all certainly know that WL is a sport that takes years to master which explains the very focused demographic. I believe this seminar only caters for either those who have the basics of WL or those who are "extraordinary" quick learners.

But once again, this is a good way to kick things off. Maybe you could have a series of an 8 week seminar with a break in between each week.

Oh it's definitely not going to be in May. We've to go to Penang for "Kejohanan Remaja"
It's going to be maybe in April the earliest. We'll plan more if the first is successful. nod.gif

And we're making the first one. F.O.C. Only thing is we need you guys and girls who would come, to write and video a testimonial of how it's helped you. biggrin.gif Fair deal right?

I plan to run the first one very soon......and it's going to be priced at RM0 per person+2 hours + 1 hour Q/A.

It's free because we feel it'd be a service to the community. And it'll be shorter lah.
Anyway, we're only taking in 5-10 people...so if you're interested, do drop your name.

I remembered my first meeting with Coach Wu. Coach Wu began weightlifting at age 10. Short in stature (1.60), but built like a tank, he couldn’t speak a word of english which meant I had to force myself to converse with him in Mandarin; a language I am absolutely terrible at. I felt even more awkward when I found out that Coach Wu was born in 1983; my age!

All that mattered naught soon after he took me under his wing. His training principles, methods, and approach to weightlifting were quite foreign but made complete sense. His explanation was clear, precise and straight to the point. His patience is admirable; he painstakingly explained every single error we had made and corrected them in detail. Coach Wu is definitely a role model for coaches. Honestly, the priceless knowledge gained from Coach Wu was so much more than I had expected. If I had to sum up my trip to Malacca with one word, it would be “Enlightening”.

http://www.getstrongsingapore.com/blog/tra...lacca-malaysia/

This is a testimonial by a Singaporean national weightlifter. He's also the holder of the fastest time for a giant wheel flip in Singapore. He also competes in Strongman and pound-per-pound is the strongest man in Singapore.

He came an entire week to Malaysia just to train with my coach.

That's dedication. Where there's a will, there will be a way. We're furthermore giving this first course for free. I'm not sure where you can find such offers around the world. So it's up to you guys to think of a way. Take my word, it'll be worth it.

Any chance of inviting Coach Wu to visit our sunny shores to conduct an olympic weightlifting workshop/camp for us noobies? I am sure the lifting crew at SWF will be happy to support it.

I'll consider this a "booking".
Find five other people to come with you. RM200 per person.
My coach will asses your capabilities and help you guys design something and teach you what you need to learn.
Meanwhile, train hard.

See the problem with guys in OHM, they're quite elitist. And they've their own mentality of stuff. I am really unsure if we'll be able to pick out an audience that wants to learn, or guys paying RM 200 with an intention of showing that they're bb'ers that know everything.

Right now, only JonYeap is confirmed. Nobody else. 1 hour 15 mins, down south to learn, enjoy, relax and eat....not too bad what. You guys can even carpool. Get to know each other in the car.

Try getting a few friends.

I just read through thread again... Now i'm confused about the workshop. Which one is it? There's so many things you talked about, it's a mess.
Strength training, or oly style weightlifting, or BB-ing?
I'm interested in strength training, C&J, Snatch (if possible).

We will explain what the seminar is about. For those interested, just come on that day.

EG:

17 April - Oly lifting basics and technique
1 April - Strength training for beginners
2 April - G.P.P and conditioning
7 April - Pre-Hab exercises and re-hab exercises for athletes.

F.O.C. is only for the first session/test run. I need to get testimonials from people. Well actually I don't since I've already got a few Singaporean weightlifters that gave him a testimony, two American athletes including one from the American national weightlifting team.

Besides Yuan Wu, I coached you out for free already during last year's July or August flex.gif

WE need the money now to raise funds for supplements. The government who aren't athletes have their own theory, that they'll give us the supps NEXT year. Go join now! OR who the hell's the president of that kamlan club anyway? I go talk to them personally.

You guys can go along and constantly complain about it being in Melaka, far and everything. This is my dedication and I'm dead driven to do the best I can in this field. It's subjective interest.

Jon, you ask the Mongolians and bring a few Flex members. 4th April 2009. I'll just need the names, and phone numbers and their agreement to write a testimonial and let me video them.

have u seen a street called jalan p*** mak u?

Added on April 4, 2009, 2:20 pmFuyoh!!! Just finished the session with coach wu and pizzaboy.
Muahaha... Brought 4 other guys with me, ranging from big to small. =.=
Nevertheless it was a wonderful experience for all of us.
My frens all left the gym hardly able to squat down or get of the car properly.
Haha... They will definitely cry the next day. =.=

As for me, i did squat 3 times already and deadlift 3 times already, so i think i am able to manage the soreness. =.=

Aside from learning proper squats and deadlift, we also did 5 sets of pizzaboy "game"! muahaha...
he timed us...
set goes like this :

40kg deadlift x5
bw push up x10
bw squat hand cross x15
we did this for 5 sets without resting (coz timing)

oh ya... forgot, i got to do 60kg instead of 40kg coz he want me to die faster. =.= hahaha...
nevermind... we all manage to finish, except the indian dude who is going to die. kakakkakaa...

my time was 3 min and 21 sec. while the slowest was 4 min and 30 sec or so. damn... it was FUN...

haha... u guys should try going there. today was just a light session but i believe in other sessions there will be lots more stuffs and also more detailed. this is a good opportunity for us and it could be the same for u all. =.=

pics and videos will be posted by pizzaboy maybe. =.=

ok, i am one of the guy who attended the seminar today...

it was fun, and learned alot of stuff...

deadlift and squat is the main thingy we learn today as that is what we basically lack of knowledge, the correct form i mean...

coach wu and pizzaboy is friendly smile.gif

and also, played the pizzaboy game, and seriously, 5 sets can kill ady... cant imagine doing 8 sets sweat.gif luckily pizzaboy changed his mind to let us go with 5reps tongue.gif

besides that, learned some basic stuff like the build for bodybuilder/weightlifer, train for muscle/strength thingy...

ohya, we also get to see pizzaboy and his coach perform squat... pizzaboy with 170kgs, while coach wu did 219kgs biggrin.gif

side note : y only pizzaboy's face is covered? vmad.gif

Added on April 4, 2009, 7:29 pmoh ya kirks, i think my deadlift 1RM is no longer at 110kg. coz 100kg i can do easily. coach wu says probably 130kg-140kg or so.
i got to try it...

oh ya... another damn nice feeling is dropping off the whole weight and slamming it on the ground. woosh!!! i cant do it elsewhere... =.= damn nice feel to it...

My coach never did bodybuilding. He's purely a weightlifter then and now. It just so happens that weightlifting can build some serious bodies as well, especially with the Chinese method of variety.

His chest, is 90% the work of dips and weighted push-ups. The other 10% came from bench pressing. He doesn't advocate benching because of the shoulder pain it gave him, so he stopped doing it after a short while.

I helped him with a workout schedule, how to program the loads used and fixed his technique. He wanted to pay me but I had a better idea. So he bought me those shoes and some other things.

Despite how fcked many of us think Americans are, we have to respect their "Give back what I take" unlike Malaysians ideas of "I want everything free" mentality. I very much like Americans for that.

But I'll pay good money for serious knowledge. Anyway, what's a few hundred ringgit? 1 PT session in fitness first is already 120 an hour... for teaching you how to throw a ball on a bosu ball. X^D

I alone went for the clean and jerk. Can be considered as totally personal training. And I whacked another car in Malacca. D@mn fxcking 'suay' to start off the day.

It was fun learning the Clean & Jerk (push press actually).

Now I know why those olympic people can just throw 100-200kg over their head.
It's actually quite easy (well, I was using a 15kg ladies' bar, eh heh heh =P)... once you know how to do it properly (which is going to take years of practice to perfect the movements)

It's actually quite easy
(well, I was using a 15kg ladies' bar, eh heh heh =P)... once you know how to do it properly (which is going to take years of practice to perfect the movements)
*
Oh boy...how you are wrong there.

Wait till when you reach 90% of your limits. Your back squat of 90KG probably gives a front squat of about 70KG. Your max clean might be about 50-55KG. Try jerking 50KG. There you'll see the difference. Then there's the leg position during the jerk position, which is very important. Many can jerk, but can't hold their jerk position. I rather snatch than jerk really.

Can come train in Melaka if only myself? Also, due to a hip strain (during badminton, of all things) I've not been working out for 2-3 weeks. Should I condition myself for 1-2 weeks first before even thinking of coming?

Hi biggrin.gif
Stretch that strain a lil if it doesn't hurt you.

I went to the reban yesterday. Spent most time observing what ppl were doing and their biomechanics. I was like a kid in a candy store - learnt a basic basic basic beginner snatch technique and with good opportunity to revisit my squats again.

Overall an awesome experience. Will write more tomorrow biggrin.gif

Im not pizzaboy for the record.

From the post above, I can see that you want to learn cnj and snatches obviously.. lol ..

If you are looking at 1 session then you could probably do it right, you should probably turn back home. You'd need a hell load of commitment for this shit.

I'll teach him the clean/snatch pull, then power clean ad power snatch. This way, when he gets used to the movement with the empty bar, he'll be able to learn to drop under himself as time goes by when he feels more comfortable.

Pizzaboy,
Will DB snatch mess with my snatch form in the future, since I've not learned the snatch yet.

And is snatch movement similar to the clean? What I mean is that will I be able to figure out by myself how to snatch using clean movements?

Yes.

No.

The mechanics of the extension is similar, but the bend of your torso and angle is completely different. Which then....yeah makes it a different movement anyway. Even a power clean and squat clean is different mechanics (power uses more back) so let's not even start talking about the snatch.

Aiseh, that means DB snatches is not recommended (for now) if I intend to learn oly snatch in the future. Crap.
For the snatch, I start in the clean position, pull the bar up & drop into overhead squat position, then squat?

I went to Gayle Hatch's site to see the difference between power and full clean. I ain't seein' no difference yo! rclxub.gif

I'll record a video of my CnJ and post them up for you to check.
I'm probably doing it without hip drive (what the heck does it actually means anyway?), jump and shrug not synchronised.

And what's glute activation?

1. No. You start with a snatch grip. Pull the bar to height, extend your hips and shrug upwards and race the bar down at the end of the extension (because of the momentum you've applied on the bar) and catch.

2. There is a difference. If I can explain on LYN, I might as well write a book already. There is a slight, but still in weightlifting, slight=significant.

3. What glute activation??

Thanks for your advice but i just want to learn the correct way to do it just so i won't injure myself and increase my vertical jumps. That's all.
